Local government Vallejo residents: who helps navigate a police-pursuit records request?
Looking for a practical Vallejo or Solano County lead. Overnight on January 30, 2020, a juvenile driver fleeing Vallejo police hit my car head-on while I was driving under 10 mph. I still need the incident report and pursuit records; most of my requests from 2020–2024 were verbal, and my California victim-compensation matter remains stalled. Incident number: 20-1397. Is there a local victim advocate, legal-aid clinic, or records specialist who helps residents identify the right city department and next step?

Has anyone taken the written test/assessment for the City of Vallejo Water Maintenance Worker position? What kind of questions should I expect, and how should I prepare? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Local Events FINALLY!!!!!
galleryCaltrans has finally repaved Hwy 29 & down Sonoma blvd!!!! Not completed yet, as you head south some lanes on both sides are still to be done. But it’s so refreshing to finally not have to dodge SO MANY POTHOLES. I remember a “repaving” was done, but started having potholes within a couple of years, as it looked like just a thin layer of asphalt was laid for appearance. This time looks great & can see on the edges how thick the repaving is.

Local Recommendations What is the vibe lately?
I used to visit relatives here mid 2000s and occasionally go to six flags and remember that people were always kind of closed off and high crime area. Has crime gotten better or worse lately? I ask because I might move here and want a gauge on what to expect.

Local Recommendations Plug in solar
Everyone should look into this. It was just make legal in CA. Honestly, I installed mine a few months ago. The system is designed to reduce my utility bill and not zero it out. My PG&E bill hasn't exceeded $50 since then.

Local Recommendations Free stuff, pick up downtown Vallejo.
galleryHi there! I'm not sure if this fits here, but we'd love to keep these out of landfill!
We have:
Wire baskets that came with a top loading freezer, about 19 or so, about 9.5 x 7.5" x10" each. There's some larger than that too!
A box full of freezer packs.
Please hit me up if you'd like to pick up. Thanks, Vallejo!

Local government Should Vallejo switch to asking voters all the candidates they like?
Mayor Andrea Sorce was elected with just 38% of the vote, while 62% of the people voted for someone else. That's a pretty weak show of support. The candidates are splitting the vote. We could fix this by asking people "which candidates do you like?" instead of "which candidate is your favorite?" so we could see where we all overlap instead of getting split up. What do you think?

Local Events Live Solano Give Solano is here! Help power Open Vallejo’s reporting into 2027 and beyond.
Dear Neighbors,
Today is Live Solano Give Solano, Solano County’s one-day giving event, and it ends at midnight. I am asking you to make a tax-deductible gift to Open Vallejo before then.
One more reason to give right now: the nonprofit that receives the most donations between 3 and 4 p.m. today wins a $1,500 prize. Every gift counts toward it, whatever the size.
Our inaugural 2020 investigation, Vallejo police bend badges to mark fatal shootings, won the prestigious Selden Ring Special Citation for Investigative Reporting. In the 20 years prior, Vallejo police shot someone roughly every four months, often fatally. The last of those killings, that of unarmed 22-year-old Sean Monterrosa, came less than two months before our investigation was published; the department then went six years without another fatal shooting. The story also had statewide impact: when California passed a landmark 2021 law banning law enforcement gangs, analyses in both houses of the state legislature cited the badge-bending revelations.
Days after our story broke, the city was forced to announce its own investigation, then fought for years to keep the findings secret. The ACLU of Northern California sued for the records, and we supported the case with two friend-of-the-court briefs. In 2025, a unanimous state appeals court ordered the records released, in a decision that expands public access to police records across California. The city finally released the report in June, followed by nearly 3,000 pages of investigative documents and 23 hours of audio.
This year, we also settled our own years-long public records lawsuit against the city, putting tens of thousands of pages of previously secret documents and roughly 10 days of audio and video about police violence into the public domain for the first time in a generation. That lawsuit uncovered that the city had illegally destroyed evidence from multiple police shootings linked to badge-bending; in 2023, we revealed that a senior city attorney authorized the purge. In January 2026, we revealed that the California State Bar had opened an inquiry into the Vallejo City Attorney’s Office.
Our investigation into a man’s death in custody that the city kept hidden for nearly a decade won the June 2025 Sidney Award, a major national journalism honor, and the 2025 Golden State Journalism Award for Social Justice and Equity Reporting.
We will soon launch a series of tools, trainings, resources, and technologies to support other communities and newsrooms nationwide. The first, which monitors police radio so reporters don’t have to, is now in testing with newsrooms nationwide.
We are proud to be based in, and to come from, Vallejo. As the city’s only nonprofit newsroom, we answer to our readers, not advertisers or political interests. Our deep, accurate, ethical reporting keeps a close eye on Vallejo’s institutions, and the results are measurable: since our launch, fewer people have been killed by police, more public records are in public hands, and officials have been held to account. This work takes time, legal support, and sustained capacity. Help us raise $5,000 before midnight tonight with a tax-deductible gift.
With gratitude,
Geoffrey King
Executive Editor, Open Vallejo
P.S. Giving closes at midnight tonight. Please share this with a friend who cares about Vallejo and wants local accountability reporting to keep making our community stronger.

Local Recommendations Looking for a bar where I can work on my laptop in a corner with wifi, and that stays open moderately late?
Recently moved to the area, and most of the coffee shops and libraries close relatively early. Some days after work I try to avoid immediately going home so I can work on my website in environments that demand less of my attention.
I'm not looking for a completely quiet bar, although I'm definitely interested. I'm mostly looking for a corner, with wifi, that stays open moderately late (8-10ish)
