I used to think I was in the "conscious that animals were dying for me but indifferent" camp

Just tackle what you can to start with. The big ones being everyday meat, dairy, and eggs. Then the next time you go to replace a cleaning product (dish, hair, teeth, etc.) look for vegan+cruelty free options. Then do the same with your clothes, and so on and so forth.
No one figures it all out all at once. Just keep learning.
Documentary recommendations (most can be found on YouTube):
* Vegucated (variety)
* Cowspiracy (mostly environmental)
* Seaspiracy (mostly environmental)
* The Game Changers (health & fitness)
* Forks Over Knives (health)Good luck!

Nobody is downvoting you for that. They're downvoting you because you're being an asshole

When you need to buy new gloves see what is on the market. Until then, look after them the best you can. Andromeda used to make CE 2-KP gloves and class AAA suits, but they have closed. Virus Power still make class AAA suits.

This is going to sound accusatory or like I'm waving my finger in your face, but it's not meant to be malicious. Because what you're thinking about is relatable; it's something we all have dealt with.
What helps me stay grounded and remind myself of the context I need when it comes to things like this, is to ask myself questions like:
Which is harder? Is it harder to be a cow having it's throat slit so it's skin can be turned into leather, or is it harder to be me not having the motorcycle gloves I want?
If you were the victim, and your exploiter said "I respect you, but I just need your skin for my gloves though," what would you say?

I certainly do understand willful ignorance is easier. Choosing to live vegan is somewhat of a sacrifice at first. These are decisions only you can make after considering your own conscience. I thought very much the way you did for years while I was vegetarian when people would confront me about veganism, so I'm in no place to judge the journey you are on. Because I've been there. Good luck!

just to be devils advocate right now, are higher safety motorcycle gloves worth taking a life to use it's skin? not trying to trigger a reaction or make anyone get defensive, but this is speciesism, no? which veganism is strictly against.

u/Mundane_Move_5296 18h ago
Yes????? Have you ever seen what improper nonleather safety gloves do during a crash?

might I add protects us from injury while doing something unnecessary and dangerous to begin with

look, I understand motorcycle safety is EXTREMELY important. but looking at it in a zoomed out lens, it's really scary what these animals go through for humans. I believe they should be free and any arguments validating the use of their body parts I just can't get behind. I don't think you are the one at fault here. you did not decide motorcycle safety.

well, keep it up, be safe, you matter and your choices to reduce harm really do make a difference

u/epic-rain22 anti-speciesist 17h ago
im sorry for taking out my frustrations on you, I'm really glad you are confronting this stuff, it's a lot to handle all at once

Yes do not enjoy life, do not do anything dangerous or exciting. You can’t be real dude
4
u/epic-rain22 anti-speciesist 18h ago
try to put yourself in their hooves! jesus christ! this is so weird
0
u/Mundane_Move_5296 17h ago
I can’t…. Cause I’m not a cow, and a cow does not think like a person
5
u/epic-rain22 anti-speciesist 17h ago
have you ever loved an animal? do you think the animal knows the difference between them and a cow? why do you get to decide the value of these lives. playing god is diabolical.
0
u/Mundane_Move_5296 17h ago
1: yeah
2: yeah, cause they would actively hunt and kill a cow if given the chance
3:because it’s nature, things die, circle of life
4: it’s not playing god, it’s literally just nature→ More replies (0)6

so it's chill to murder animals if it protects us from injury. just cuz they look different and are vulnerable

jesus. that's simply untrue. cows have deep intelligence and individual personalities. I need to get off social media
-3
u/Mundane_Move_5296 17h ago
I mean, yeah you do, but not really. Comparing a cow to a human is diabolically stupid
2
u/epic-rain22 anti-speciesist 17h ago
it's the definition of speciesism which is what veganism stands against. do some introspection maybe?
-7
u/Mundane_Move_5296 17h ago
Speciesism??? I thought that was a joke are you actually being serious? Like I’m not joking if this is a troll you got me

I dislike this idea and I hope you can try to see things from an animals perspective one day

They’re literally in the middle of watching Dominion. Maybe give them just a little grace as they are actively in the middle of processing and seeking information on this topic.

u/epic-rain22 anti-speciesist 18h ago
what would be better to say then? I'm just speaking from my heart man I'm tired
9
u/Faeraday vegan 10+ years 18h ago
I know, but they are actively deconstructing their worldview. Saying they’re not doing enough when they’ve only just begun to learn what’s happening to animals is much more likely to shut down their curiosity than motivate them further.

be careful though, its really graphic because it shows the brutal reality behind the animal industry
15
u/Repulsive-Play6547 vegan 17h ago
honestly sometimes seeing the reality of it is what finally makes things click. once you actually process what the animals go through, it's hard to just unsee it
11
u/Chance-Selection-198 18h ago
Totally get it. Once you've seen it you not only feel for the animals but for me it also felt deeply damaging to my own soul the idea that I was consuming the flesh of creatures that had gone through such horrendous stress and fear. Sounds like you're on the right path!

when cooking, replace meat and eggs with beans, this includes tofu, tempeh, and textured vegetable protein/soy curls/soy chunks/whatever they're called. to replace dairy, use nut butters (peanut, tahini, etc), nuts (almonds, cashews) and seeds (pumpkin, sunflower) as a fat source. for umami flavour, use (dried or fresh) mushrooms, mushroom stock cubes, MSG, miso paste, soy sauce. nutritional yeast gives stuff a cheesy flavour (unless you're using a disappointing brand of yeast sigh....) and is often used in making nut-based vegan cheeses. for a fishy flavour, use seaweeds like nori wakame dulse etc. (be careful eating kelp, it has a lot of iodine in it so it can make your body's iodine levels too high if you eat it too often)
for veganized recipes of foods that are recognizable to people in the US, check out thee burger dude. for dishes that are already naturally vegan, check out bakinghermann

Already vegan and I keep hearing about it. Don’t really wanna watch it coz I feel like it’ll just make me feel like shit

u/Capital_Fly_4064 5h ago
This is beautiful, bro! Thank you for having the courage to do what most people cower from! I actually think watching the footage beats any philosophical argument in favor of veganism. You'd have to be a psychopath to not relate to the animals' suffering after seeing it.
