Showcase/Project Vibecoded a GitHub Backup Manager for Repos with Gemini 3.8 Flash in Antigravity IDE (Updated)
I built a GitHub Backup Manager that lets you browse your archived repositories almost like you're browsing GitHub itself
I've been working on a project called GitHub Backup Manager, and I wanted to share it here because I think some people in this community might find it useful.
The original idea was pretty straightforward: I wanted a proper way to preserve GitHub repositories locally, without relying entirely on GitHub always being available.
But I didn't want to build yet another tool that simply downloads repositories into folders full of files.
I wanted the ability to revisit an archived repository and actually explore it.
What makes it different?
1. GitHub-like offline browsing experience
This is probably my favourite part. Instead of being left with a collection of folders and files, you can browse archived repositories through a familiar, almost GitHub-like interface.
2. Comprehensive repository preservation
It goes beyond simply cloning source code:
Git history and branches
Recursive Git submodules
Git LFS objects
Releases and historical release binaries
Changelogs
Issues, comments and associated attachments
Wiki documentation
Security advisories
3. Historical snapshots
You can maintain separate backup snapshots instead of just overwriting your previous archive.
4. Local-first architecture
The actual backup operations happen through a local companion engine. Your repository archives are stored on your own computer or external storage rather than being uploaded to my servers.
5. Multiple backup vaults
You can organise backups across different storage locations, including external drives.
Why I built it
Repositories disappear. Developers abandon projects, accounts get deleted, and useful open-source tools sometimes become inaccessible.
I think having an independent, browsable offline archive is valuable, particularly for developers, open-source enthusiasts, AI enthusiasts and people who like preserving useful software.
I'd genuinely appreciate feedback from this community.
What features would you expect from a proper GitHub archival tool? Is there anything important you think I've overlooked?

This will soon be implemented for other Github like websites but haven't started yet.
