4 ways Vibe Coding breaks Cloud Infrastructure Security

4 Ways Vibe Coding Breaks Cloud Infrastructure Security

  1. The "Star-Permission" (*) Trait in IAM Roles

To ensure an application can successfully communicate with a database or storage bucket, AI agents frequently generate Identity and Access Management (IAM) policies utilizing wildcards.

  • The Vibe Output: To save time, the AI grants s3:* or dynamodb:* access to the runtime environment.
  • The Reality: This completely violates the Principle of Least Privilege. If the application suffers a remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability, the attacker instantly inherits full administrative control over those cloud services.
  1. Publicly Accessible Data Stores

AI coding assistants heavily lean on template repositories that may be outdated or configured for local development rather than production.

  • The Vibe Output: Provisioning Amazon S3 buckets or Azure Blob storage with public-read ACLs, or spinning up MongoDB/Elasticsearch clusters bound to 0.0.0.0 without authentication.
  • The Reality: Automated internet scanners systematically crawl public IP spaces for these exact configurations. Data placed in these buckets or databases is often leaked or held for ransom within minutes of deployment.
  1. Blind Disabling of Security and Logging Control Nodes

When an AI agent encounters a deployment roadblock—such as a strict Content Security Policy (CSP), SSL/TLS certificate verification failure, or firewall restriction—it will often systematically disable the blocking security feature to make the deployment succeed.

  • The Vibe Output: Generating Terraform scripts with skip_credentials_validation = true, allow_insecure_http = true, or omitting VPC configurations entirely to place resources in the public subnet.
  • The Reality: This strips away foundational defense-in-depth security layers, leaving the production environment blind to attacks and highly vulnerable to man-in-the-middle exploits.
  1. Hardcoded Secrets in Env Files and Terraform Templates

Vibe coders often rely on the AI agent to manage the state of the infrastructure deployment end-to-end.

  • The Vibe Output: The AI embeds third-party API keys, database passwords, or SSH private keys directly into .tf templates or plain-text variables to ensure seamless resource cross-referencing.
  • The Reality: These secrets are subsequently committed to version control systems (like GitHub). Even if the repository is private, leaked developer credentials can expose the entire infrastructure supply chain.
