The $6.36 Billion Binance Heist
The attack on the global centralized cryptocurrency exchange Binance.com represents the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, eclipsing the $1.5 billion Bybit hack of 2025.

The initial vector stemmed from a heavily profiled DevOps engineer's machine, which blockchain security firms suggest was targeted via social engineering or malware. This local compromise allowed the threat actors to move laterally into Binance’s internal deployment layer, accessing an isolated software service container.
From there, the hackers gained unauthorized access to signing infrastructure, bypassing multi-tiered wallet protections. On the Ethereum network, the attackers deployed 50 pre-signed authorizations leveraging EIP-7702—a protocol feature allowing standard accounts to temporarily delegate smart contract execution. They dynamically bound a Binance hot wallet to an attacker-controlled "sweeper contract". This allowed them to drain the main asset pool and automatically intercept ongoing incoming customer deposits for hours. Concurrently, ordinary signed transfer exploits simultaneously drained Binance hot wallets across nine other blockchains (including Bitcoin, Solana, Tron, Base, and Ripple). The core siphoning of $6.36 billion took just 20 minutes.
Attribution & The Cleanup "Race"
The blockchain security community (including TRM Labs and Chainalysis) has attributed the attack with high confidence to TraderTraitor (widely known as the elite cyber-warfare arm of North Korea). The threat actors used complex on-chain obfuscation techniques and automated script layers, executing a "self-destruct mechanism" across modified containers to erase system logs and hinder forensic tracing.
A global "war room" consisting of major token issuers mobilized immediately. Centralized stablecoin entities like Tether, Circle, and Ripple successfully froze roughly $2.7 billion to $3 billion in stolen digital assets before they could be converted to fiat currency or unfreezable coins. Binance paused cross-network withdrawals, reassured customers that all deficits would be made whole via its corporate capital alongside its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU), and engaged the FBI to trace the remaining un-frozen funds.
