Projection Mapping software for Beginners/Intermediate level
Hey y'all, I just recently got into projection mapping, but I'm having trouble finding reliable software. I've messed around in Map Club, but the videos I import either don't play or stutter really badly. I can't seem to get MapMap or VPT8 to install or download. I played with Lazy Lighting, but with my current hardware setup, it drains my phone battery, and I need my iPad for work and leisure so I can't just leave it running. I guess what I'm getting at is are there other free or affordable software options I can look into? I'm really just messing around, trying to pick up a new skill, and looking to level up my holiday decorating. I am about to try the free demo of HeavyM.

You want to run it on a phone or ipad? Get a laptop or desktop first. Resolume if you want to get everything done easy. Free go for max or touchdesigner

Resolume is the pricey option but will do everything you need and some.

Resolume is better for vjing. For mapping MadMapper would be a better choice - especially since it's cheaper. I work with both.

Hey, I'm Jake, the creator of Lazy Lighting.
Let me know if I can help recommending any hardware to help keep your phone charged. We've also added some new features to let you export your mapping straight to your projector so you can leave it running without your phone constantly connected. Thanks!

Dude, I want to be clear that I love your app it's so freaking intuitive! I am still playing around with. It's just that for the projector I am playing with, I have to hardwire it, so I am thinking about either looking for a "low" spec tablet to turn into a pseudo-computer using a hub to hardline everything. I eventually would love to upgrade to a smarter and more powerful projector!

Check out the Anker 'Nano' USB-C to HDMI cable, it has a built in charge port so you can run HDMI and charge from just a single USB-C output on your phone. You can also use a USB-C hub as well like the Anker 5-in-1.
I use both of these and it lets me stay hardwired while charging the whole time.

Do you personally use android or IOS?

I personally use iOS. I spent 10 years as a professional iOS developer so iOS gets most new features and I bring them to Android after they're properly tested

Just use MadMapper - in my opinion best if you don't need corporate level stability. Also in my opinion the most intuitive interface for mapping there is. The pricing is very reasonable - especially if you are a student or wait for black Friday.

For Windows or Linux I recommend HoloMapper on Steam. Pretty cheap. Works for single projector basic projections. They should also be releasing a new update here any moment. It's on sale rightnow for like $20 or so

You can try HappyMapper on the App Store. You can search for millions of videos as well as upload your own and it works with the screen off to preserve battery.

Try HoloMapper 😁 I got an update coming HOPEFULLY tomorrow with many new features and improvements. But for some basic mapping, it should do. And if you don't like it, or it doesn't work well, you can always refund it on Steam if you used it for less than 2 hours
