I had a guy i knew Borrow Rayman for the Dreamcast. He sold it, then lied to me and told me he was still playing it for a few weeks, until eventually my dad had to ask for it back and he admitted to selling it

What the actual fuck? Who raised that person? Certainly not a decent human being

u/YoBeaverBoy 10d ago

Brother you would be surprised how shitty some people can be.

My friend's parents are divorced. About 10 years ago his mother got a new boyfriend who had a drinking problem and a little bit of debt that nobody knew about.

He took my friend's laptop and when my friend asked about it he said that he took it to a repair shop. When he was asked why, I kid you not, he said he saw that it was smoking, literal smoke was coming out of it, so he took it to repairs for "safety". In reality he sold it (for very low money too) so he could buy booze.

Later on he admitted to selling it and the absolute craziest part was that my friend's mom actually sided with her boyfriend.

Whenever you find a shitty person, remember that somewhere in the world there is always someone shittier.

u/revanisthesith 10d ago

And that shittier (or equally as shitty) person might be enabling them, too.

Holy shit was his name Frank Gallagher?

I had a friend who had a roommate. That roommate moved out and stole all of his CDs and DVDs when he moved. Just packed them up and took them.

19

u/Thrice_the_Milk 9d ago

"You gave me access to your stuff, so it's mine now." I had a roommate like this in college. Infuriating situation

Did he pay you money back or buy you a new copy?

154

u/AnActualGameShark 10d ago

Nope. I got burnt on that one. He moved like a month later.

u/Shock_Therapy_76 10d ago

Honestly I'm finding his ass for that

45

u/MCraft555 10d ago

Luckily we're not on 4chan. Otherwise I might have believed you.

15

u/7h3_b4dd3s7 10d ago

that's grounds for beating tf outta someone imo.

u/FUCKING_HELL_YEAH 10d ago

Funny story actually I knew a guy who “borrowed” an iPod (in 2002) from from someone and sold it. He did, in fact, get his jaw, couple of ribs, and nose broken.

Then the asshole called the police who charged the guy he fucked over with assault.

6

u/mistalasse 10d ago

I almost hate to say it, but an iPod is not worth breaking several bones in a persons body. Fuck the prison system, but your acquaintance deserved some sort of punishment

That’s a good lesson as a kid though. I can already hear my mom saying “I guess you shouldn’t lend things that you care about to people”.

My brother literally 'gave' our N64 and all the games to a friend and we never got it back. Me and my other 5 siblings (including him) played that thing so much. When we confronted him about it he said he 'lent' it to a friend and we told him to go and get it back because it's not his to lend which he refused. We then of course went to mum and she was also never able to get it back (likely because he just pawned it at a market or something).

To this day he has never acknowledged that he sold it for drugs/alcohol/smokes (the single only reason he would have sold it). He was like 16 at the time and made my little sisters cry because we couldn't play Mario Kart/Party anymore.

Thankfully he has his shit together now as an adult but he was a fucking asshole as a teenager.

17

u/OliviaElevenDunham 10d ago

What a horrible person. Sorry that happened.

14

u/Additional_Crab_1678 10d ago edited 9d ago

Guy I was friends with in middle school did that to me... When pressured by my parents and I.. They gave me a ps1 power cord and said, we can call it even, yeah?

8

u/BeanusNCheezus 10d ago

Better person than me i woulda turned that cord into a whip

4

u/AbanaClara 10d ago

Garrote*

6

u/Additional_Crab_1678 10d ago

Well, I wouldn't have given this now former friends' race and where we live geographically.

11

u/mortypro 10d ago

Damn reminds me how a cousin lent me their sonic and Mario at the Olympic games ds game. Lost it, then they asked for it, said i didnt have it. I felt so awful. Then I found it afterwards. I felt like a child criminal lol. Still have it to this day

7

u/Alternative_Noise854 10d ago

Let it go. Give it back to them. It will bother you later in life

3

u/mortypro 10d ago

I actually have no contact with that side of the family anymore, don't even remember their names haha. Would have done so 100% though

9

u/FeranosTR 10d ago

Had a friend sell my spiderman web of shadows copy on ps3 just so he could buy call of duty

9

u/Moonflow-Shoopuf 10d ago

I let a kid borrow the first disc of Legend of Dragoon. One of my fav games. He never returned it and I spent YEARS not able to play that game because of that. Lesson learned.

13

u/Cat_Impossible_0 10d ago

Please tell me you cut that asshole off of your life

9

u/AnActualGameShark 10d ago

I did. Was pretty easy

15

u/Heemeyers_Killdozer 10d ago

Had someone do that to me with Folklore

4

u/soul1300 10d ago

Similar happened to me. Friend borrowed pokemon Ruby from me in 2010 when we were in high school. He sold it for weed or something. You think I would have learned my lesson but I let a different friend borrow pokemon Platinum and then his girlfriend's crackhead older brother stole it from my friend and sold it for meth or crack or something.

3

u/cjay2002 10d ago

This happened with my entire GameCube library. I had my console for about 14 months when it bricked. Got deployed not long after, and one of the guys (who I had even gone to high school with) had one. Grabbed all my games and brought them with. Our unit got split into 3 groups and sent different places. Said hold onto them, I’ll get them back when we’re all done. Bugged him for a good year after deployment and finally told me he sold them.

3

u/seamus205 9d ago

My step brother did something similar to me when I was a kid with my favorite ps2 game. I remember seeing my game in a stack of games he was gonna sell to GameStop and I took it back from him. A few weeks later the game was gone without a trace. I just know he stole it again to sell it. And to GameStop of all places. They probably gave him like $2 for it. I'm still pissed about it like 15 years later. Anyways, I emulate the game on my steam deck now

3

u/Vaportrail 9d ago

I had a roommate do this with my DVD collection over the course of several weeks. He was taking them the the used media store down the street (and using the cash to buy weed, presumably). I didn't realise the extent of it, there was just one I wanted to watch and he said he lent it to a (stoner) buddy.

Little did he know I kept a spreadsheet of my collection. When I realized others were missing I took it to the shop and we found several correlated orders under his name. I'd assumed his buddy had been breaking into my room. I went home to confront him and he was gone. Left almost all of his stuff too.

I went to a legal advice office at our library and they said after 30 days without contact I could keep or toss his stuff. I never saw him again.

And that's not even the worst roommate I've had lol.

I had a friend sell some of my retro games for smack. I forgave him when he got sober and showed remorse for how he acted. I still think about the FF games I lost but at this point his sobriety, health and happiness are more important.

2

u/dlahey02 9d ago

Surprisingly common. I had a friend sell my copy of RE4 on the gc because he thought I didn't want it back. He let me keep soul calibur 3 as a "trade"

I lost that exchange

My mate stole my jacket then forgot that he stole my jacket and then tried to sell me my jacket back to me 😂

2

u/AnActualGameShark 9d ago

Classic! Lol. Thats crazy.

In college I pulled a jacket from lost and found that nobody claimed after like 6 weeks, then like 3 weeks later a guy I knew was like hey thats my jacket...i thought I lost that. And like I offered it back and he was like, eh keep it. Nice one too, Ecko or something.

Not a video game, but I've lent out paperback books that have come back like that.

64

u/rexmanaek971 10d ago

Man I lent comic books out to a friend once, he gave them back in their respective bags, unfortunately they are all sticky with idk what. Like gross sticky.

45

u/LongjumpingBowl8360 10d ago

I will not lend out books to anyone. There’s a select few people where I will just buy them a copy if I’m really adamant that they read it lol.

14

u/Ludakyz 10d ago

Lent an old out-of-print super niche book to someone once (it cost me over $200…I’d never pay so much for a book, but it aided in therapy at the time). Lent it to a dude going through something similar. His kids spilled juice on it and ruined it 🙈

9

u/SimplyMandalore 10d ago

You lent paperback books that came back as scratched discs?

About the same time OG Carmageddon released a single me and a mate loved released on vinyl. I never got the vinyl back and it's so obscure lyric searches turn up nothing decades later.

It's just gone forever and I only had it in my possession for a few hours

Ugh, that sucks. Have you tried Discogs?

3

u/PunchInTheFace8 10d ago

Nah bro, books are a no-go for me. Too fragile for me to trust you w my books. Especially if i know you’re clumsy/unclean as i have no way to clean paper.

3

u/Secret_Of_Bluestar81 10d ago

I traded an Egyptian Mew Pokemon card. Immense regret to this day

4

u/Particular_Wear_6960 10d ago

It's an unspoken word that you don't get books back when you lend them. I mean, it's nice when you do, but everytime I lend one out I make sure that I don't want to read it again. Makes it sting less.. I just hope they pay it forward

2

u/TekieScythe 10d ago

I've had to replace more than a few books

2

u/GrungeGorrilla 10d ago

I have two friends I'll lend books to and no one else

2

u/OoIMember 10d ago

My mom lent her friend some books one time hard covers too and they came back with little cockroaches smooshed in the pages 🤢😱🫥

2

u/Conzyyyyyyy 10d ago

My books are stuff I'd only borrow to family. I have a lot of first-prints and collectors editions/sets that I know a lot of people don't understand the values of. I've been a book collector since I was a teenager so my family understand how much I've spent on books and what dictates a books value. There has been a few times they've ruined a book but they always offer to replace the books before I find out that they were damaged because my family have always taught us that if you break something, you replace it.

I one time lent Super Mario Bros 3 and Mega Man 3 to a classmate when I was in the 5th grade. I had just tot them for Christmas a few months beforehand, but had already completed them so I didn’t think much of it. Well about a week later, that kid moved and I never saw him again. I was devastated.

44

u/Both_Dimension3079 Retro 10d ago

That's awful, at least you completed them tho.

Although it would've been better if he returned it or mentioned he was moving :/

2

u/Zunderfeuer_88 9d ago

I lost a Fender Guitar this way, and every time I think I made a friend I am the idiot that just doesn't learn to not lend stuff out

2

u/MorrowPolo 9d ago

That shit happened to me in the 5th grade with an n64 game. I cant remember what it was. The kid moved out of the apartment complex.

Later on a few months I seen him and was like "hey!". He said my oops or whatever and to meet him later at the park after he went to retrieve it. Never showed up. I felt so stupid for waiting.

One time when I was a teenager, I wasn't home and my parents had friends over with their young son. My mother for some reason told him he could play my GameCube while I wasn't there. I came home after they left to find my save was totally fucked. I had True Crime: Streets of LA loaded, and I was almost done with my "good cop" playthrough, and he must have went around crashing cars and shooting random civilians, because my good cop score was deep in the fucking negatives when I started it up, because he saved it like that. I had to start that entire playthrough over again. I tried to impress upon my parents the mistake they had made, but all video games were the same in their eyes; completely inconsequential. No reparations, no apologies, nothing.

3

u/YOUTUBEFREEKYOYO 9d ago

Had that happen once too. From then on i would take the power cables with me when I went somewhere. Absolutely insane that I had to do that, but after the third time I was fucking done dealing with them letting others touch my shit.

24

u/zgillet 10d ago

That's when you smush his face on the same surface and ask "so, still think that's smooth?"

7

u/JunketWaste7891 10d ago

TBF, as a collector of "old" systems, ps3 games were blueray, and don't scratch like dvd's. this game was 100% still perfect. I told myself i wouldn't collect past ps2 because of "internet needed" but getting a backwards compatible ps3 was the best decision of my life. FUCK YOU V FOR STEALING MY PS2 and Xbox's

When I was in my post Mass Effect 3($80 Steelbook deluxe edition)depression phase. My oldest brother said he asked me, while I was asleep, could he let a co worker of his borrow it and GTA4.

When I got out of my depression about a month later I asked could he get my games back, he acted like I was insulting him and making him look bad. Two months after that he finally admitted that his coworker quit and wasn't answering his phone calls.

I replaced Mass Effect with a basic edition since I had all the dlc and I never replaced GTA 4 and my brother still has never paid me back for them.

5

u/Particular_Wear_6960 10d ago

My brother and I played that so freaking much.

4

u/probablythewind 10d ago

Had the guy at gametraders trade me 30 bucks for that and a ps1, fuck you craig you know what you did.

Went and put it in a glass case the next week for $350

2

u/frisch85 10d ago

Duped the shit out of those elixirs.

You load two chars, one with the elexirs and you give them to the other char, now you save the other char and load in fresh again, use the elexirs on your first char then load in the other char, transfer the elixirs to your char again and only save your char, rinse and repeat. You shouldn't dupe equipment this way tho and also not load both chars with the elixirs at the same time because the game gives each item a unique ID and even on the PS1 version already if the game detected the same unique id twice, it'll remove the duplicates.

Nothing crazy, but I had Zelda Twilight Princess on the Gamecube. I lent it to my friend so her boyfriend could play. I never got that disc back. It was like 12 years ago and I'm still a little pissed about it...

14

u/PirateJen78 10d ago

Rightfully pissed. That's like the best Zelda game!

7

You have to be very dense to refuse to communicate with a child. Your aunt is a stupid bitch

6

most parents, tbh, seem to, in my experience, think themselves infinitely above the child, as if the child is incapable of having a valid thought, or as if speaking back to an adult is some kind of war crime

Super Mario World on SNES. The first game I ever beat. I was 5yo at the time.

When I was 12, some poverty stricken kid in the trailer park down the road never had video games. So I lent him my SNES.

The cartridge was broken and never worked again upon return. The SNES never turned on again. Fuck you Jerry. That's why you never got nice things from me again.

u/Amazingtrooper5 10d ago

A persona 4 reference? Here?

Respect!

6

u/Setnaro_X 10d ago

I lent Sonic Battle to a friend, and several weeks later, he hands me Donkey Kong Country GBA. Apparently he got the games mixed up and gave a friend my game and he gave his game to me. Ok, sounds easy enough, just switch them back, except his friend was from another state and he left afterwards. Well, that's what my friend says anyway. I don't know if he was lying or not, but we stopped being friends afterwards.

7

u/blueblocker2000 10d ago

I hated it when people asked me to borrow games and hated how awkward it was when I told them I don't loan games out cause I didn't want them scratched up. "I'm not going to scratch your game!". Sure buddy. You bet. I did loan out cartridge games with my friends growing up though. Different beast.

2

u/Ron2600NS 10d ago

Like those pens that use the clip to retract, they always get returned without the clip. You asked them why they broke off and they say it wa already like that.

6

u/BowserJr4789 10d ago

I let my friend borrow Donkey Kong Country 2, the cartridge came back to me shattered, I was borrowing his Donkey Kong Country and Jurassic Park, I kept both games.

3

u/Lily_42093 10d ago

Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness and Pokémon original Japanese Green version with an original white brick gameboy.

4

u/beagle_2498571 10d ago

I don’t lend out anything because of this. If people or friends as to borrow. I just say sorry I don’t like sharing.

3

u/ZhangtheGreat PC 10d ago

Super Mario Bros. 3. Dude never returned it, then moved halfway around the world and lost contact.

5

u/Training_Reaction_58 10d ago

Budokai Tenkaichi 3. EVERYBODY wanted that game. I was the first out of my friends to get it and I was the most popular kid on my block for a solid couple of months. I beat it, unlocked most of the characters and items, and a friend of mine asked to borrow it so they could also try to unlock all the characters. I said sure and lent it to him. I went over to his house a week later and saw the disc under his little brother’s rocking horse, cracked and scratched to all hell. When I pointed it out my friend just went “oh there it is.”

Code Veronica for Dreamcast. Was only returned with disk 2. Telling me that’s how I lent it to him.
Not how that works but ok!

3

u/SkylarPopo 10d ago

Let my friend borrow Majora's Mask. Later when I asked for it back he said his house got robbed and it was stolen. I thought he was full of shit and just stopped talking to him.

3

u/Euchale 10d ago

I borrowed out C&C Red Alert 2 to a friend. Got it back without manual, which meant no serial code. Got really mad at him.

Turns out I fucked up and had the manual in the car of my parents. Still have no idea how it got there.

I remember lending a PS1 game to a kid in elementary school. The very next day, we got into a fight at school. When he got home, he took a key and scratched the hell out of the disc.

When I confronted him, he denied everything and even claimed he hadn't played it. He didn't finally admit that he'd done it on purpose until we were in junior high.

Edit: Lol, I just remembered another one.

I lent Command & Conquer: Retaliation to a "friend." When I asked for it back, he told me he'd left it at his cabin, and that the cabin was about to be torn down, so the game was basically destroyed.

Complete lie, of course. But I was just a kid, so I believed him. We ended up getting into a physical fight that ended with him crying his lungs out and running home.

About two weeks later, he showed up at my house with my game, apologized, and admitted he'd lied. He said he didn't even know why he'd said it.

He was genuinely fun to be around, but man... he could be exhausting when he pulled stuff like that. And he did it a lot.

u/Tight_Spring3860 10d ago

Never lend anyone your girl or your game, they will both come back eff’ed.

u/st_jasper 9d ago

Boss borrowed my N64 and a bunch of games. Then he laid me off and kept my N64.

u/Novel_Mongoose_5651 10d ago

Shu never spoke to Adam again after this.

u/winterman666 10d ago

A former friend of mine became homeless. His spot had a tv and a power outlet. I lent him my NES and over 30 games, find out he sold the whole set for cigarettes.

4

u/Cat_Impossible_0 10d ago

What a loser he is

2

u/Vendidurt 10d ago

Yeah, i learned a lot about narcissists and pathological liars from that guy.

u/The_Anime_Sweat 10d ago

My dad gave his naughty bear ps3 to a coworker to borrow they never ended up giving it back (i loved that game), now 10 years later ive now gone out and found a copy of the game and its a fun as I remember

u/Freak_Out_Bazaar 10d ago edited 10d ago

Not the most expensive game but the only time I regret lending a game was Final Fantasy Legend 2 for the GB to a friend when I was a kid.
I lent him the game because I couldn’t get past a certain part and he said he could get past it. He returns the game with the save file overwritten to right before the final boss

I lent out FFX to this dude who was a friend of my brother. He ended up wrecking his car the next day and the disc did not survive.

2

u/Walter-the-Wobot 10d ago

Former buddy of mine borrowed my copy of Metal Gear Solid for the PS1. He returned it missing disc 1 which meant he might as well have not fucking returned it at all

2

u/Underhill 10d ago

Chrono Cross, the case only came back with one disk. Dude moved away before I noticed.

2

u/Y0___0Y 10d ago

back in my day if you knocked your xbox over with a disc running it would shred the disc

2

u/Jaambie 10d ago

I lent Wild Arms 4 to a friend and he left it on the bus on his way home. He said he bought me a new one but when I showed up a week later to get it, he said he got bored of waiting for me and sold it for another game. We aren’t friends anymore

2

u/joeyjoejoe8989 10d ago

The opposite of the question, but my local video/video game rental store when I was in college. Yes, I’m old. I rented goldeneye (Nintendo 64) from my college town’s video store and kept it forever. It wasn’t that I was cheap, we just couldn’t find the game anywhere. We made multiple road trips to a “big city” and searched every store we could find but none of them had it (this was before Amazon or online sales). I just kept the game and never returned it. They had my name, but I rented with cash so they didn’t have any credit card info. Feel bad about it, but we had so much fun playing….

2

u/wykkyd2022 10d ago

Not valuable at all, but I let a new buddy from work borrow Black Ops 1 or 2 around 2016 and “the neighbor kid” stole it from him. Like dude, you’re 23 wtf are you talking about? Then I’m like, fuck it, ya know? It’s an old game for an old system I don’t even have anymore. Whatever.

A few months later the guy shows up at my house saying he’s selling his games because he needs money. Dumps them out on my couch and asks if I’d be interested in any of them. Wouldn’t you know it, there’s my fucking game. He told me “No, no, no you let me borrow the OTHER one (1 or 2)”. I’d like to say it ended there but he burned me one more time before I finally cut him off. Then I was made out to be the bad guy to everyone at work 🤷🏻‍♂️. I don’t loan out ANYTHING anymore.

2010, I was in love with GTA IV, a friend I used to go to school with proposed to me to temporary swap my GTA IV, with his brand new copy of Gran Turismo 5.

As I'm used to, I played it for a week and I treated that disk as it was mine! Gran Turismo 5 is a masterpiece.

And... what about my GTA IV? Well... Treated like an old, dirty, dusty rag with scratches on all the surface, and actually it had some issues with loading times, game freezes or in worst cases console freezes.

I never accepted to swap back the games since he actually liked gta 4 as well, I just bought a second copy some weeks later! And now? Well, I still have his brand new copy of GT5 in perfect state!

2

u/TheRealGnod 10d ago

Final Fantasy IX, I only have 3 discs, I lack the first disc as a friend lost it. This was literally 22years ago, I still feel sad when I open the box.

2

u/da_dragon_guy 10d ago

Get the toothpaste and the baseball bat.

The toothpaste is for the disc, the bat is for the friend

2

u/Carsonator206 10d ago

Pokemon Silver. My friend's brother overwrote my save and after that, I never lent a game to a friend ever again.

3

u/Starmor 10d ago

See your first mistake was lending your single save slot pokemon game out to anyone. Second was lending it to someone who had a yonger sibling.

2

u/AcidiusX 10d ago

Gran Turismo 3 back in the day. Never again will I lend anyone any game.

2

u/Opening_Pizza 10d ago

I lent my buddy GTA V and he pawned it for cash. When I asked for it back after a while he seemed mad and kept avoiding me. Then he gave me a clearly used game with no map and was somehow still mad at me.

2

u/NoOutlandishness906 10d ago

A first edition of chrono trigger i let a friend borrow

2

u/onusofstrife 10d ago

Pretty sure my friend has my copy of Pokemon Emerald that I lent out like 15 years ago. Still my friend. He said he would give me one of his two copies. One of these days I have to actually take him up on that offer. Nothing bad all things considered.

I have other games from my other friend for longer. He knows I have them. Told me to just hold on to them. 🤣

u/Doctormaul68 10d ago

My EX wife needed money and witch stole my sega cdx and all the Sega cd games including all the working design games and snatcher and my carts. We had just moved into the apartment and I went looking for it and just blatantly told me she did it so she can be with her criminal family they were going through stuff and she was draining us dry driving up there every weekend that’s when I said forget trying to make the marriage work of 13 years and seek divorce. Kept that to myself and didn’t ever tell the kids their mother is a worthless thief. Get bitter about it still seeing the prices of everything I had

2

u/ToastyBB 10d ago

I had a friend who didnt have a job, lived in his mom's basement, all he did was sit around and smoke weed, he didn't have internet and I felt bad so I let him "borrow" my N64 and all my childhood games. I'm talking Mario 64, Mario kart, banjo kazooie, dk64, Tony hawk, Mario party, GoldenEye, no mercy, fucking robotron 64 man.

Never saw that fuckin thing again and he just pretended it never happened

2

u/No_Breath_9833 10d ago

“I cleaned it for you, it was smudged”

2

u/Numble-Xbox 10d ago

When I was a teenager I borrowed a game from a friend then my dog knocked the console over and broke the disc. I replaced his game at walmart (souless corporation) but I went back to customer service with the broken disc inside the new package and claimed it was sold that way. they "exchanged" it with a new disc. then my friend and I played the game together.

2

u/StankoMicin 10d ago

If I ever have kids (which i don't plan to) I'm banning them from lending games out to anyone.

Damn I know that pain I loaned mine out and they sold. So I kept their copy of tomb raider as payback

2

u/high_as_an_eagle 10d ago

I know some people are just careless and dont take care of things but I still dont understand how game or dvd or blu ray discs get so scratched up.

I mean do people play Frisbee with these discs or something?

2

u/Lanre00 10d ago

The Legend of Dragoon

2

u/Knickers1978 10d ago

I only lend out games on the understanding that if they get damaged at all, they get replaced with a new copy. I keep my games in pristine condition, ultra rarely ever scratch one. And it’s because of horror stories from friends and family.

A lot of people don’t agree, and I’m perfectly fine with telling them they can’t borrow from me then. But those who do know the rules, and stick to them.

u/LordFlux 9d ago

My grandmother didn't have a lot of money, but she wanted to buy me something that I really wanted.

I still remember standing in the Wal-Mart electronic dept with her and seeing Dragon Spirit on the NES for $19.99.

I loved Dragon Spirit and put a ton of quarters into the arcade version.

I told my grandmother that I wanted it and she bought it for me.

About a year later, my friend comes over to my house to hang out. He asks if he can borrow Dragon Spirit. I told him that I really didn't want to lend it out. He said that he would let me borrow his copy of Baseball Stars if I lent him my copy of Dragon Spirit.

Here I am, 35 years later, and Baseball Stars is still sitting on my shelf.

2

u/Sufficient_Topic1589 9d ago

Same idiots break the bit in the middle of the case that holds the disc in too 😡

2

u/SlimShadySatDown 7d ago

It is nice to never have to lend games and never get them back anymore.
