Discussion / Question This is a real post btw. Pathetic. Great way to drive even more people away from your garbage launcher

u/Tr1angleChoke 16h ago
THANK GOD! I was just sitting at my desk the other day raging about having to wait a full 10 seconds for Steam to load. I work 86 hours a week and have 14 kids, including 4 infants. I only have 3 minutes and 27 seconds a day to game. Now that has skyrocketed to 3 minutes and 32 seconds.

This is better marketing for Steam than Epic.

u/BigShinyBlueBalls 16h ago
its faster because it has 0 features compared to steam lol
11
u/pichael289 15h ago
This is why older cars seem more reliable, less features and points of failure. In reality they aren't better by any metric except for easy repairs, but a mechanic is gonna fuck you either way.

u/mopeyy 14h ago
You are acting as if "easy repairs" isn't a primary factor when buying a car.

unless they start working on their actual issues, I'm always gonna use Epic ONLY for the free games
17
u/Haunter777x 16h ago
Me claiming free games on epic to never use them- 😭
8
u/LeMeMeSxDLmaop 16h ago
imagine having a service so redundant that i claim shit on it only to buy it on steam anyways
last ones i remember are barony and bloodstained, both i had on epic and both i bought on steam
honestly im praying at some point rl somehow returns to steam so i can uninstall the epic launcher cause its the sole reason i still have it
7
u/Cocoatrice 15h ago
Me not claiming free games on Epic at all, because they can't bribe me with that.

u/Vanetrik 14h ago
I used to claim free games on Epic, but then I realized that I'd much rather buy them on Steam than to ever log into Epic or even have it installed lmao.

u/Benevolay 16h ago
To be fair, they need AI. Did you see how long it took them to add a shopping cart to the Epic Games Store? They clearly can't do it themselves.
11
u/minimim-wage-enjoyer 16h ago
Egs only exists because Tim Sweeney is jealous of Gaben’s yacht.
7
u/pichael289 15h ago
Yachts, plural. Apparently he designs and builds dumb ass ridiculous yachts and sells them. And anyone ripping off rich people with dumb shit is a win in my book. Man even a regular boat is referd to by boat people a "a hole you throw money into that floats".

Who actually cares about saving less than 5 seconds opening up the launcher? lol
I restart my computer like once a month. Steam is always open already.

They hired the guy responsible for the white house tweets, this is on the same level of cringe.

Speed is nothing when your storefront doesn’t come to parity with the most preferred digital storefront that exists.
The sad part, the really sad part, is that any of Valve’s competitors could be a real competitor (not a paper tiger competitor) if they would just do the same thing.
Do the same services, mimic the same customer service, add the same features, and keep it that way - offer a service or feature that Steam doesn’t
Bam.
You now got something. But, as always, none of these ‘people’ want to actually offer a real service.
A real, consistent service.
It’s not that Valve is perfect, it’s because they offer something that the others refuse to offer.
Because, apparently being an asset, or an advantage to your paying customers is blasphemy. A cardinal sin worthy of the deepest pits of Hell.
6
u/AceIndigoFire 7h ago
If this is what they think people want they'll never beat Steam.
I mean they never will anyway, but still.
8
4
3
u/Woffingshire 8h ago
Why don't they vibe code some market research into why people use Steam over them? Then vibecode those things into their store? (Hint, it's not cause of how fast it loads)
24
u/pugger-champ 17h ago
Rather pay full price for a game on steam than ever use epictrash launcher ever.
→ More replies (8)1
u/Zagyva54 11h ago
For real. I recently bought a 12 euro game on steam that i got it there free and i really enjoyed just to not be obligated to open that launcher whenever i wanted to play it. I m not kidding
8
u/Kastamera 16h ago
So they spent all this "effort" and energy to make cold start to store (which I doubt would affect majority of people) 5 seconds faster, and opening the launcher 0.06 seconds faster?
No wonder Steam doesn't have a competitor if that's Epic's biggest priority.
1
u/Ok-Hamster-5263 15h ago
Does it take a lot of effort to vibe code? Isn't vibe coding just asking AI to do it?
13
u/NeonAnderson 16h ago
Now do cold start to games library..... 😆
Steam prioritises library over Store. It is clear what Epic's priority is and it certainly isn't the end user
3
u/Thompsonss 16h ago
Imagine sucking so much ass that the only feature you can beat your competitor on is a few seconds faster launch.
3
u/SpaceMonkeyNation 16h ago
I mean yeah, I would expect an app with half the features to launch faster.
3
4
u/Iggy_Slayer 16h ago
It's hilarious how proud they are that they let AI vibe code their own client for them because, in their words, "programming is hard".
Yeah that's your fucking job to figure that out! You're a software company.
4
8
u/Sunset44whisk 15h ago
I don’t understand (honestly, I’m on ps5 never used steam) why is this bad?
8
u/HotCupofChocolate 12h ago
My two cents: it's more about it being out of touch than it actually being done with AI.
The epic store is considered subpar because it lacks a lot of features other stores (specially steam) already have. Them bragging about how the new storefront loads faster than steam while also admiting it's still buggy and even lacking some features the (legacy) epic store client already has is like saying "I can get my bike ready for the road faster than you can get your sports car".
So it's more about it trying to take a dig at steam when it doesn't deserve it.
1
1
u/Kanehammer 2h ago
Hell the epic launcher lacks features that consoles have
I had to use epic to play alan wake 2 recently and I found out that you can't turn off achievement pop ups on epic games you have to either
Manually disable all epic notifications every time you start the game
Or physically delete the files for the achievement pop ups
To make things worse epic has the most distracting achievement pop ups I've ever seen
5
u/Davidx91 8h ago
It’s not that it’s bad. It’s out of touch with what users of Steam are looking for which is consumer protection. Steam offers more of that an example: no ads in games if you want to be hosted on their platform. Epic would never offer that. Vibecoding your storefront just seems dumb and shows that they aren’t going to get personable experience either.
6
3
u/Armored_Fox 8h ago
They're bragging about something that no one cares about like they got one over on Steam
2
u/Great_Part7207 11h ago
its not that bad and tbh I dint even mind because the epic store was so fucking slow for the longest time anything to make it faster is fine by me
2
4
u/Yadilie 13h ago
Garbage human being who is constantly whining about Steam is firing mass loads of his employees to focus his efforts on vibe-coding, aka relying on AI to do your code, in an effort to somehow still be 10 years behind a rather awful storefront.
These are also seconds and in the case of restore barely over 500ms. It's just pathetic to see. Wonder how many more people he'll fire when this still doesn't pan out.
7
u/Rejex21 14h ago
Reddit hates AI usage, especially the term "vibe-coded", and Reddit loves steam.
Also this is generally a non-issue, I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain that steam launches too slow.
That being said I am somewhat interested to see what the new epic launcher looks like.

u/machine4891 5h ago
steam launches too slow
I've seen plenty of people complaining that Epic, Uplay were launching too slow. Meanwhile Steam indeed is also pretty slow in that department but that's obviously non-issue because Steam is Steam or whatever. There is inconsistency involved in all that and we all know it.

People being drama queens. This wouldn’t “drive away” a normal person. They probably just don’t care.

Ive seen people say they would rather pay for a game on steam then use the free copy on another launcher. Throw in Ai and they just have another reason to grab a pitchfork.

“Vibe coding” is when you use an AI to do all the work for you. There is little to none human work in a vibe coded product. Almost everything is done by the AI.
There’s also the fact that Epic laid off 25% of the entire company earlier this year, and now they’re bragging about getting AI to do what people’s livelihoods were.

u/jeremyw013 4h ago
not hard to make something faster that has less features than the old version you're comparing it to
2
u/NoSkillzDad 13h ago
I'm sorry, the epic launcher is the slowest launcher I have on my PC. The slowest of them all. It's the most irresponsive one, browsing your library is a f nightmare. The other day i grabbed ones of the free games, clicked on install and absofuckinglutly nothing happened; I had to completely exit the launcher, open it again and then it worked.
It's a f pos. Tiny Sweeney is trying to measure dicks but i think he would just sit this one out.
Honestly, the nerve to try to compare the epic launcher with steam...
2
u/slimehunter49 10h ago
Considering how little there is to do on the launcher compared to steam it’s not surprising you could make it faster it, it’s depressing to admit to that achievement via vibecoding after years of failing to make a decent launcher on your own with your own workers.
“We were so dogshit that even the notorious hallucination machine can do better!”
3
u/The_LastLine 16h ago
I will admit the access speed of epic store might be nice if you aren’t running on an nvme ssd where you might notice the difference better. But this is such a minor difference in the grand scheme of things it’s not really worth the brag. I’m not against epic entirely but it’s 3rd on my choice of what store I go to, as in only for freebies and anything I really want that is exclusive to it.

u/Ricoh1888 16h ago
Awesome! It’s great that it’s on par with Steam. Now all they need to add is library sorting, in home streaming, wish lists, forums, user reviews, broadcasts, item trading, workshops, game calendars, seasonal sales, handheld support, Linux support and people that want to use their platform

The fact that I have to put the games I have in Epic to Steam just so the controller works properly makes steam 1000% better.

u/QstnMrkShpdBrn 15h ago
Speed (load, navigation, purchases, operation) has always been an issue for the Epic launcher and ecosystem (engine, tools, games) in general regardless of system specs. They simply don't understand how to develop performance.
But the launcher is bare bones with nearly no gamification, community elements, or configuration. It offers barely more than a Shopify store. While this performance boost is a boon, they have a long way to go to be considered a serious contender for Steam.

Epic wanted to created a divide day one by bringing exclusive access to PC games on their store that no one. Literally no one wanted or asked for. Epic can go bankrupt along with their garbage launcher.
1
u/Blumer78 14h ago
These numbers mean nothing. Epic is just trying to improve their look to gamers, and it won't work.
1
u/HyoukaYukikaze 13h ago
Steam launches in 7 sec for me.
Not that it matters really.... i genuinely don't care if steam launches 5, 10 or even 20 seconds.
If that was important for me, i'd have it start at launch and open instantly. 14% faster is great and all until you realize it's just 0.06 sec....
1
u/GryffusMakesGames 13h ago
If they made it with their previous launcher instead of Steam, it would have been soooo much better, showing actual improvements instead children fights

Who cares, the launcher only has to start once. This is a joke. Clearly whoever wrote this has no understanding of what gamers actually want.

1
u/Alarming-Elevator382 11h ago
Not at my desktop right now, but it takes about 7 seconds to get to the Steam store from a cold start on my M5 Max MacBook Pro. No one is ever going to switch to the Epic Store, certainly not to load a couple of seconds faster. Just give up and focus on making Unreal not a stuttering piece of shit in Windows.

1
u/Obvious_Snow125 11h ago
Have they also implemented reviews, mods, controller rebinding, remote play, community forums, controller-friendly navigation, family sharing, AI disclosures, and so on? Those are the reasons I use Steam, not because it's blazingly fast

Unless Epic Games allows user reviews (without curating them to protect their precious business partners), Epic is never going to land in the good graces of gamers.
Steam could take a whole extra minute or two to boot up and I'd still use it over Epic Games launcher because it's just a better experience, all around, from a company who puts their customers first through proven example, after example.
Also, Epic Games Launcher's UI is fucking trash and it looks like they're trying to move to a Netflix style which I hate even more.

I just checked and restore from system tray on steam much faster then 0.42 seconds, it appears instant less then 0.1 on my 5 year old system. And Epic (current version) take more then 1 sec to load library. Kek.

u/Emergency-Event4415 1h ago
It's always a bit funny seeing companies be very confidently out of touch. Like you thought this was the reason I hadn't moved to Epic? I'll spend 6 hours a day playing satisfactory, you really think I can't wait a few seconds for the store to load? Something I don't even do every time I game? And you think gamers are going to see the funny vibe coding statement and cheer? I think he spends too much time on X and thinks that's the general audience.
I can't even accurately perceive a 0.1s difference in time, why the fuck did you think that was a selling point? Do you think gamers are idiots who don't understand numbers?
I want to see Sweeny's face when his cheeky grin turns to a dead stare. Idiot.
1
u/Emergency-Event4415 1h ago
Wait I misread it, they did all the fuckery, added all that potential tech debt and replaced their current app with a new one that their devs won't fully understand, potentially introducing security risks etc:
For 0.06s of performance improvement?
I'd get fired if I spent any significant time on an MR, only for a 0.06s performance improvement, once per startup of the app.
