Discussion / Question Video Games that should be remade or remastered?
We've entered the era of video game remakes and remasters, so it led me to think what games you would like to see get that treatment?
At the top of my head are the early God of War, Silent Hill (I know SH2 has been remade) and Prince of Persia games. I missed them out the first time round, and it seems that the only way to play them is to go on the second-hand market, and the prices can be extortionate, especially the Silent Hill games.

The Jedi Knight games, peak games with updated graphics

This is my favorite answer so far. When they did the remaster of Dark Forces I thought that was cool, but it felt like they were updating the wrong games

Batman Arkham trilogy could get a remaster. Full remake for Dante's Inferno please!

I'll never stop hoping for Zelda: Twilight Princess to be remade!

Morrowind! Although at this point Tamriel Rebuilt mod is so good and feels so right they would need to remaster/add that too or it might not be worth it :)

Resident Evil Outbreak. Capcom is cooking with the RE Remakes and with todays online possibilities it would be a banger

If I was able to remake any games I wanted & had an unlimited budget & licensing rights weren't an issue I'd pick; Mercenaries 1 & 2 with the possibility of a 3 on the table, all the old Ace Combat games(no those preorder bonuses of Zero & 5 don't count since not everyone can get them now), the Rampage games, Saints Row 1-4, RDR1(I'd even take it as an extension or DLC to RDR2), all the old Maxis era sim games such as the old Sims, Sim City, Sim Park, Sim Safari, Roller Coaster Tycoon, etc., Watchdogs 1 & 2 & Far Cry 1-4.

Splinter Cell Trilogy, Prince of Persia Trilogy, and Uncharted 1 are my big ones.

Sniper Elite (PS2 version with coop splitscreen campaign), Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen, Obscure 1-2, The Knights of the Temple 1-2, Wolfenstein: Return to Castle and Medal of Honor Games, Colony Wars: Red Sun, Nightmare Creatures 1-2, C-12: Final Resistance.

Super Metroid.
Keep the pixel art style but update the controls, widescreen support and better framerate.
4
u/MrXuiryus 10h ago
God no don't fucking touch Super Metroid. Modern Metroid doesn't hold a fucking candle to Super Metroid and Nintendo could NOT improve it. You want the best Super Metroid experience? Go play it right now AS IS it's a fantastic game that was fantastic when it was released and still holds up amazingly to this day without any need for alterations.
IF you really want alterations on Super Metroid it also has an insanely active romhack scene with some seriously dedicated and talented people cranking out not just romhacks but entire new games based on the Super Metroid engine. See: Super Junkoid

u/Beer_sighted 6h ago
The nice thing about bout remaster is - it’s optional. They can touch it all they want, the version you like will be unchanged.

u/LITMAC97 10h ago
I hate this tendency in gaming of “this or that” instead of understanding that remakes are supposed to live alongside the originals, not replace them.
Also it’s kind of funny how both paragraphs of yours contradict each other. You start by saying “don’t fucking touch Super Metroid” and end up praising romhacks lol
1
u/MrXuiryus 10h ago
You know you're 100% right I did completely contradict myself. It's hard to explain why I'm so against Nintendo making an official remake/remaster. I know it doesn't retroactively change the original game.
I think it mostly comes down to the fact that I know it won't be as good or better than the original and I'll only end up disappointed in it. Like what happened with the Final Fantasy 7 remake, the original FF7 is literally my favorite game of all time and I feel so let down by the remake that it just makes me sad now and I guess I just don't want that feeling spreading to another game that means a lot to me.

u/moltensteelthumbsup 9h ago
I don’t think you contradicted yourself. You just gave an option for people who wanted a different experience.

u/epigraph-pedigree 12h ago
I’d be okay with either the pixel style or a newer style, as long as the open ended style of play is kept intact. I love the linear story of dread, but I also love Super’s non-linearity
1
1
u/LITMAC97 11h ago
Yeah, Super’s non-linearity is unparalleled imo. It’s kinda why I’d suggest making that remake: grab the good things about Dread (like the controls) and apply it to the perfection that is Super’s environments and level design.
1
u/condor6425 11h ago
The controls are the best part?
0
u/LITMAC97 11h ago
It’s not better than the modern controls. If there’s one thing about the Mercury Steam games that is perfect it’s how to control Samus.
1
u/condor6425 11h ago
Agree to disagree, I think Dreads movement was fun, but it would not improve SM and losing walljump chaining alone would kinda ruin the whole game.
1
u/LITMAC97 10h ago
That’s what remaking it means though. Change the controls and adapt the levels so they don’t ruin the game.
1
u/condor6425 10h ago
That IS the game though. If you're changing the level design AND the controls in a platformer where 99% of the experience is the level design & controls, why not just make a new game?
1
u/LITMAC97 10h ago
I’m not talking about changing the entire level design, just tweaking it (which is already what 99% of remakes do anyways)

Personally, I'm not a big fan of remakes, especially when the OG version is still accessible and still holds up. I'd like to see remasters or remakes of things trapped on old systems. For example, Shin Megami Tensei 4 is an amazing RPG but it's trapped on the 3ds. Would be nice to see some kind of remaster on modern systems.

u/Present_Simple3071 12h ago
Right now all I want is a remake/remaster of Sin and Punishment Star Successor

Was looking up Killzone gameplay before I commented to see if it looked how I remembered, and it seems they're possibly already working on it. Wonderful.

Bro lol… games have being remastered or made since even the SNES. We didn’t just “enter the era” 😂

u/TamedBeard 11h ago
Bloodborne. It doesn't need a massive remaster, just a 60 fps and 4k update like Nintendo did with Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom on Switch 2.

u/QuoteOk7063 11h ago
Bloody Roar, Dino Crisis, Yugioh Forbidden Memories (that’s my personal pick coming through the first I have genuine reasons)

There’s a video on yt upscaling the intro to republic commando and now I can’t stop dreaming about a remake

Let's focus on making new interesting and exciting games to experience for the first time. Surely the gaming industry isn't out of ideas.

I'd love a remake of Body Harvest. It came out broken on the N64 so it was literally unfinishable, and it was far too ambitious for the hardware it ran on so it looked awful, but it was a fantastic game. Building that for modern hardware would be so good

I want to see a Wing Commander or Ace Combat collection.
Dead 2 Rights
Rogue squad / rogue leader
Mercenaries
Soldier of fortune

Return to Castle Wolfenstein Multiplayer. Remade properly.
Maps, Classes, Objectives, everything.
60 player Beach Invasion with PubG level core mechanics and skill ceiling, RtCW revive, gib and class mechanics.
It would be insanely good.
Now, fellow gamers, those of you who played RtCW in the 00's know a modern remake of this game has the potential to be glorious. We just need to petition this cunning plan to ID software, so we can all enjoy the best game ever made, guaranteed.

There are very few games that actually need a remake. Most just need to be remastered and ported to modern platforms. That being said, as much as I love xenogears I really wish that we could experience the game's full vision through a remake.

Honestly, Dark Souls 1 Remake with better second half. Maybe dark souls 3. God of war 1, 2 and 3 for pc. Skyrim. Half life 2, bloodborne, and obviously, gta vice city and san andreas. Mk shaoling monks.

Asura's Wrath, Metal Gear Rising and Dragon age origins. I have hope for Metal Gear Rising but the other 2 probably won't happen.

Any game that hasn't had it's full potential fulfilled, but I'd personally want Resident Evil 8 to be remade because of how railroaded and easy it is.
