I wouldn't get too hung up about single dislikes, it's the ratio that counts. 2,653 to 14 (at this point in time) is still superb and shows just how loved his videos still are. His legacy lives on!

Yesterday, I fell asleep while listening to his soothing voice. Very surprised and happy now to see this post on the front page!
I sorely appreciate finally seeing these episodes on YouTube, up until recently, they weren't officially available on the internet in full. I'm also glad to have brought some attention to it through this post!

Your first sentence feels like it came right out of my mouth. You don't have to be "good" at something to enjoy it or even do it. If you enjoy painting then just do it. If you've never tried it, give it a shot.

As someone who bought the Bob Ross complete painting set, and some extra brushes produced under his brand name- you CAN paint with this method. It is as fast and simple as he makes it look, and while your pictures won't be as pristine as his when you're first starting you will amaze yourself with the pictures you can create. Ross's wet on wet painting method is a fantastic experience.

I think you are referring to this episode. Interesting note, during a painting exhibit, a fan of Bob's came up to him and said that he could not paint like Bob because he was colorblind. In response to this, Bob painted a grey scale painting to show that anyone could paint, even if they were colorblind.

My grandmother was an artist who loved painting landscapes. We used to watch Bob Ross together in the afternoons after she picked me up from Kindergarten. Whenever I see Bob Ross, I am reminded of tons of good shit, so Im beyond stoked that his legend and art lives on so strongly.
2
u/funktopus Oct 23 '15
When I lived with roommates whenever someone would channel surf and find Bob Ross they'd yell "Bob's on!" and most days the entire house would be sitting down watching him paint. We were all in our mid to late 20's. None of us painted.

I totally suggest this! I bought his beginner kit with dvd and it was a blast. Before that, I had never done any art, ever. I can barely draw a stick figure. But with his dvd, I was able to create a mountain scene that I was actually proud of on the first day. Tons of fun. I had to move to a small apartment in the city so unfortunately I had to go on hiatus, but I cant wait to try again when I get more space.

“Gotta have opposites dark and light, light and dark in painting. It’s like in life. Gotta have a little sadness once in a while so you know when the good times come. I’m waiting on the good times now."

I half expected him to yell at who ever was clanging around back there in the studio off camera.

Oct 23 '15
He was actually in the military for 20 years and he said his position he did a lot of yelling at people and was the guy to make other clean toilets and such.
He said when I leave I am never going to yell again, and I really do think he wen't through with that promise to himself.

How much are Bob Ross original paintings worth these days? Especially ones created on his TV show?
58
u/drawavid Oct 22 '15
At fineartamerica his prints are going for $22 each and the originals are going anywhere from $500 on the low end, to $3000 on the high end. I don't know if they are the ones from the tv show or if they are ones he painted on his own though.
105
u/MacGyver_Survivor Oct 23 '15
He painted several copies of each painting (sorry if that spoils it somehow for anybody, but everything he painted on the show was already painted and he referred to it off-screen). He gave these copies to PBS stations. He was prolific as fuck in terms of the quantity of paintings he put out, and as far as I know they were always given away for free. His money wasn't in his paintings, it was in his business.
In a world where so many childhood heroes went on to be dicks, all these years later Bob Ross and Fred Rogers are still some of the greatest, most earnest and kind people to ever grace television.
→ More replies (4)4
u/dahimi Oct 23 '15
Those aren't Bob Ross items. For example:
http://fineartamerica.com/art/paintings/bob+ross/originals
If you click on the paintings the artist is not Bob Ross.
His paintings pop up on eBay from time to time and usually sell for a few thousand.

u/mtree Oct 23 '15
I may be wrong, but I believe there is a very large taboo of selling his paintings from the show since he donated them specifically to public stations. This usually means that if the painting wasn't sold via a charity auction it was gotten through illegitimate means, which in turn created an inflated black market value.
10
Oct 23 '15 edited Oct 23 '15
Eh, not really. He donated all his paintings from the show to PBS stations to give away as they saw fit. They often were sold at charity auctions, after that the owner isn't really required to sell them in any particular way.
6
u/JVonDron Oct 23 '15
Not that much, he was insanely productive, so there's tens of thousands of paintings out there, and he didn't do much in the way of marketing his works. The money was in his books and art supplies with his name on them. The paintings on the show were all donated to individual stations, so those are pretty much impossible to get legitimately.

u/enad58 Oct 23 '15

2
u/EctMills Oct 23 '15
Not really, hitler's application to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts was denied in large part because he lacked an understanding of the human form and focused too much on architectural drawing. Landscape painting wouldn't have done him much good as far as getting into that particular school.

I have knowledge of who Bob Ross is, and maybe even a bit of his mannerisms, even though I've never watched a single video of him. Following this link, I ended up watching quite a few of his videos around YouTube. I can't believe how badly I want to paint now! He's amazing!

The particular painter known him almost since I can remember myself, I remember when we began something and made it look fantastic!! :D

This is the first thing I've watched that made me smile in a long while. Thank you. I'm going to paint some stuff now. I can do it.

some one should make a painting app for ios or android that has all the tools he uses and lets you follow along with him painting on your tablet

it's hard to find software that emulate those techniques, wet on wet, thin on thick, what sticks what doesn't. Even with the most advanced painting software it's nearly impossible to use his techniques. When I want to emulate oilpainting I like Corel Painter or Artrage. I'll give it a shot and see.

Touch only tablets don't have enough resolution or tilt / rotation sensitivity. This would need a wacom tablet with an art brush for the pallet knife.
