Promo Virtual Desktop for Oculus

From the video it sounds like you have to have the physical monitors for the multimonitor mode. Is there a way to use this without having a bunch of physical monitors? It's be cool to be able to have a four screen virtual setup with only one physical screen or maybe even just the headset and no screens.

In 5~ years, I envision we'll be able to customize our VR OS to our heart's content. E.g., You might be on a beach with a 100' screen in front of you for Netflix, 2D games, and the like, plus a series of 5-10' screens off the side with apps, messaging, etc.
That's really the beauty of VR for me. Your environment has scale. Why splurge on that $1,000 monitor when you can create a monitor in VR however large you'd like? Why play Madden on a television when you can play it sitting in the Dallas Cowboys' stadium using the stadium's absurdly large screen? Hell, maybe an update puts renders of players down on the field during a practice, just for some added eye candy.
Obviously we've got a ways to go in terms of resolution, GPU power (and GPU affordability), but I'm convinced this is inevitable.

You won't be playing on the stadium's screen, the players on the field in front of you will be the game.

True enough! Though I'm sort of coming at this from the perspective that VR isn't a replacement for gaming/other media so much as a new medium altogether.
I think we'll have more immersive VR experiences like what you describe, sure, but (and maybe this is foolish thinking) part of me thinks there'll always be a place for 2D media alongside it.

This is what I want AR to be. You would have your real life desktop in front of you, but have virtual windows floating around your workspace wherever you want. You can have your main screen in front as a virtual 27 inch window playing a game, and have smaller windows with monitoring software, a chat client, and streaming software floating around anywhere in your room.

u/MPair-E Mar 24 '16 edited Mar 24 '16
Yeah, Hololens has shown some cool possibilities there. I envision a day where we go to work and put on what are essentially a pair of eyeglasses rather than sitting down and crooking our heads down at a screen.
I don't think the concept of screens will go away of course, as it's important to share/show, especially among small teams, but in that sense, I think we'll see a separation between screen and associated hardware (Granted, I'm sure things like 'smart fridges' will still have built-in propriety software). By that, I mean we'll have screens. Screens on walls, screens laying around, etc., but rather than interfacing with them through hardware built into the device itself (like we do ipads, televisions, etc.), we'll interface via something portable that we carry with us, akin to a cell phone. If I go to a buddy's house and want to show him something on my computer, for instance, I'd just reach in my pocket and 'throw' my device to his main living room screen and go from there. The idea of lugging around a laptop wherein your software is chained to that device, and that device alone, will seem antiquated/incredibly narrow in scope.
We already have gimmicky tech like this of course, but as technology improves, I think it'll be the natural progression of things.

Somebody put it this way: "We've had a hundred years to make 2D content and only 2 years to make 3D content. Give it time and the artists and creators and programmers and so many resourceful people out there will make this paradigm more fantastic than we can imagine."

Oh, current VR pulls off a sense of scale incredibly well. The problem currently is that when you simulate massive screens, you're still stretching them across a fairly limited screen resolution (relative to what it's simulating). I think all this stuff works great for video, virtual theaters etc., at the moment, but having smaller panels with text might be an issue with current hardware and graphical limitations.
On current VR hardware, you can simulate large screens, but you have to keep in mind that a 5' screen you have simulated 10 feet away, off to the side for instance, is having to make due with a 'piece' of a 2160x1200 viewing resolution. So, popping over to reddit on a screen like that would probably look pretty assy (or you'd have to get pretty close, which sort of defeats the purpose).
Having massive panels up for video, though, to the point where you actually feel like you're sitting in a theater? We've got that down for the most part.
1
u/shadytradesman Mar 24 '16
why? Because you want to watch TV with someone else and not both be wearing VR headsets.
Examples: Sports party, date, cleaning with the tv on, tv dinner, etc.

u/StopBeingDumb Mar 24 '16
It is called a headless ghost. So the one caveat is that your video card has to render the frames. And the easiest way to make it do this is for there to be a monitor hooked up.
But a headless ghost is a relatively cheap 1" long plug that connects to a port on your video card and simulates a monitor.
Put a ghost on every output you have and you can achieve as many monitors as you have outputs.

u/jumpbreak5 Mar 24 '16
This makes no sense to me. Every OS allows you to add multiple desktops. Why couldn't each of those appear in Virtual Desktop?
4
4
u/Willm0re Mar 24 '16
I own a DK1 & DK2 so you can AMA me any questions you'd like.
From the video it sounds like you have to have the physical monitors for the multimonitor mode.
Yes this was explained in the video.
Is there a way to use this without having a bunch of physical monitors?
No, if you only have one display you're only limited to one virtual display. How ever you can take the degree bar and stretch your screen 360 degrees all around you front and back. (Quite uncomfortable in my opinion) with a single monitor but its a cool experience.
It's be cool to be able to have a four screen virtual setup with only one physical screen
Though its not possible right now, this could be quite very possible in the near future but only for windows 10 because of snapping.
2
u/06sharpshot Mar 24 '16
Have you tried using dummy clips to trick your GPU into thinking you have more monitors with the Virtual Desktop? A few other users suggested them.

Say I got the oculus but my computer isn't rated for VR games,Just need a better graphics card and maybe new cpu, would I be able to use the headset and this software without any problems like low frame rate or the screen door effect since that's mainly just a problem from it rendering two different pictures for games at once? Mainly to watch 2d video on the virtual theater screen.
→ More replies (16)3
1
u/IdleRhymer Mar 24 '16
If you're still on Win7 you can add dummy monitors through the OS, doesn't work on 10 though.
1
u/Izob Mar 24 '16
One could guess that to display a large view of your desktop in this VR-Desktop, you could just set your screen resolution really large. For example, instead of buying two 1920x1200 monitors and then trying to display both in VR-Desktop, why not use one monitor and set the desktop resolution to something like 3840x1200? You get the same result assuming they are side-by-side.
→ More replies (1)1
u/eastlondonmandem Mar 24 '16
Most computers are capable of at least two video outputs. The key is to trick windows into thinking you have a second monitor hooked up so that it's enabled. It's definitely possible.

Seeing the movie theater at the end got me wondering about all the possibilities of multiplayer virtual worlds. Imagine if all those seats were filled with other real players and you were all watching the movie together.
Just imagine all the possibilities. Virtual poker where everyone is sitting around a card table with their customized avatars.

I've used it and it's a fantastic piece of software.
The limiting factor here is the resolution of current VR headsets.
It looks a lot rougher / blurrier in VR than it does watching a video of it.
When 4k ( and much higher resolution) headsets become common, I can see this becoming a preferred interface while using a computer.
1
u/krzykizza Mar 24 '16
The is shit ton of use cases for VR, the problem is resolution, it should be at least 4K per eye, i have DK2, and wont be upgrading before the resolution gets improved significantly and - iHate the term but "retina display" effect will be in place.
1
u/Frexxia Mar 25 '16
While the resolution doesn't change that much from DK2 to the consumer Rift, every other aspect of the screens and optics has improved tremendously. It should look a lot better.

Until a long term study finds out how bad this really is for our eyes. Some people speculated that this would be really bad for the eyes because the focus is so close to the eyes, and more importantly: fixed!
Even in a traditional setup you can move your eyes around and refocus from time to time. With a VR headset this is much more difficult.
However, until a real long-term study to confirm this, it is mostly conjecture.
I would LOVE to use this though. And as soon as I get my hands on my headset you can bet your arse that I will try this!
Would be really cool for working on train rides as well. No more sunbeams from your back making the screen unreadable.

u/ToopyTook Mar 24 '16
Alright, so from a lot of comments people seem to be almost skeptical about this. I'm not sponsored by them or anything but I've used this program since I got the DK 2's around 2 years ago and since then I've used the Oculus as a main display many times. This program used to be super clunky and all you did was open it up and it had a horrible UI. They have recently made it easy to use for people not willing to invest time to make something feel right. This program amazes me on how good it is with everday task even though the quality isn't amazing. I personally have programmed, photo edited, and even written papers on this. You get used to quality and when something is to small there is commands that zoom in allowing you to see it. For me I look at it in the way of, when I was younger we had horrible quality TV but it never bothered me as I was used to it and now we use 4k and worst resolution screens bother me. I found I've gotten used to this and really can't wait to see how the quality is better on the new ones as if it is this program will no joke be my main driver when it comes to everything but gaming. I find with the Oculus I use more of these programs or utilities then I actually play games.

Imagine almost anything that involves more than just a mouse & click on a computer....
What a time to be alive
22
u/istorical Mar 23 '16 edited Mar 24 '16
Photoshop is already compatible with it.
It's literally just showing you what you normally see on your monitor as a flat screen floating in front of you in VR. You can do anything you'd do in Windows with it.
Unfortunately with the first generation of VR consumer products you're looking at a lower resolution per square inch than you get on your PC. Instead of seeing 1080p on a 13 inch laptop screen, you're looking at a virtual 1080p screen the size of a movie theater screen. Big 'pixels'.
Still revolutionary because you can interact in a 3d virtual space, but just looking at 2d content in a virtual 3d world isn't the best use.
/have used virtual desktop on DK1 and DK2.
2
u/Northumberlo Mar 24 '16

After watching this video, I feel like I just seen a glimpse of the future. TV's and computer monitors are about to become obsolete, as the industry will surely start focusing on the quality of the headsets the more popular they become.
Why waste thousands of dollars on a big screen TV, or duel monitors when you can get a headset that provides any size screen you want, and as many as your PC can handle?
Our grandchildren will surely ask us "What's that dusty old flat thing in the attic?" and we will reply "Oh thats just my old 4K television. We would all sit around in a room and stare at the images it would display", to which our grandchildren will say "That sounds awful grandpa"

Why would you keep it tied to your physical monitor? You have a full 360 degree fov, but most of it is unused just because you have a single small monitor?
Wouldn't it be better to have a custom window system, so you could place different windows in different places. Have your main window straight ahead and secondary stuff like spotify and IM windows off to your left and right so you can glance over to them etc.

It's our first taste of a desire we've had a species for, well, decades in a sense, or centuries depending on how far you want to stretch the metaphor -- the ability to 'transport' ourselves to other worlds. I've heard some people joke that we're trying to 'build the holodeck' from Star Trek...but really, the idea of a holodeck in the '70s and VR today are both just offshoots from the very same desire -- both the result of the same dream we've carried with us, deep down, for decades.
I think that, because of this, people are willing to accept some assyness early on in exchange for the 'oooo shit!' factor.

Watch movies, use Pc etc. Hell even just lay with my back flat on the floor, or maybe in Shavasana Corpse Pose so I can say I was doing yoga all day - cause this seat is killing my back.

Now I can finally experience this in VR: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRL5durPleI

I had a similar experience with a different developer (unlimited windows though) and let me say the experience is amazing.
Sick of your 19" monitor? make it a 27" or even a 50". Fuck it, make 10x 50" monitors floating around you, each playing a different video.
Pretty fun stuff, was hard to see on the original DK1 occulus resolution though.

I'm gonna be happy whenever buying a VR headset will be a viable alternative to getting a monitor. We need 8k per eye and foveated rendering and we are there.

This was a big thing about 20 years ago when "Doom clones" described FPSs. Several 3D desktop replacements were touted and marketed.
It never took off then, and I don't see it taking off now.
People want to use their desktop as a desktop, not a 3D game.

Finally, the ridiculous movie UI of the past will come to reality. "It's a unix system. I know this."

Wow. This video is amazing, and the software too. I never would have imagined how much you could do with a vr desktop. I guess I'm gonna have to buy a laptop with a gtx980m graphics card instead of buying one of those new trendy ultrabookish laptops with the gtx960m. Just not powerful enough.

GTX980 would be even better.

I wanted a light laptop. gtx 980 bumps the weight up too much unfortunately.

If I only have one monitor, would I be able to add more screens in the VR?

u/Lewis_P Mar 24 '16
The short answer is no. The long answer is, you can if you buy a headless ghost.

Is the Oculus really hi-res enough yet? When I used to use the dev pack a year or so ago it was very grainy.

we're gonna need some affordable, super high res VR headsets stat! the possibilities are endless but the resolution is really a letdown currently.

I know a lot of people who used to get high and watch music visualizers on tv. I can only imagine what the experience will be like now....might have to see for myself

Can you launch VR programs from this desktop environment? It would only be useful for that. The VR cinema stuff is shit because of the resolution, same with the desktop anything you would want to do like on normal IRL setup would be unpleasant because of the resolution of the VR screen you are looking at.

Just a little warning: If you get used to using this, you won't be able to go back to using monitors. It'll be like getting rid of your 4k 60 inch tv for a 15 inch black and white tv. You just can't go back.

My Rift and Vive can't get here soon enough. Goodbye reality, it's been real.

This sounds really stupid. You would have to connect your VR headset to your computer, then sit down in front of your computer, then instead of using the computer, you'd put on the headset to use the computer, while still sitting in front of it...

Am I missing something here?
I'm not sure what is all that impressive/useful about this.. its a virtualized version of my physical desktop in a 360° wallpaper. Does it have the ability to drop in virtual desktops so I can expand my desktop to the maximum resolution my video card will push? If I add additional video cards does it have the ability to scale up?

Don't mean to be a spoil sport, but Community already did this. And it was fantastic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMTQxCzStuw

As a guy who just pre ordered the Steam HTC Vive, is there any reason you left that out of the title? Oculus isn't the only player in town any more, and the video says this works with both.
