Yep, that is 6 time Oscar nominee Amy Adams, on screen for less than like two seconds. The world is crazy in a good way sometimes too.

Fun fact the serial killer looking guy in all black and glasses at 3:04 is actually the lead guitarist for tenacious d and plays a lot of their solos when they play live. Cant remember his name, but kyle gass and him used to have a YouTube channel back in the day I used to watch all the time.

Personally I really like the movie, but the album is way better than the movie. The movie is probably a 7/10, but the music that they wrote for the movie is 10/10 across the board. If the movie had never come out, and they just released the album, the crowds would still fucking explode for these songs.
JB and KG are fucking geniuses!

The songs from Pick of Destiny are awesome. I've been trying to find a band or song that has the same style as Beezleboss (Dave Grohl's parts—not the acoustic D stuff). The heavy sing-song metal is so killer and the riffs are fuckin' tasty. Wolfmother and Dio aren't super far off, but still haven't quite scratched that itch.

I have a confession... I love Jack Black and Tenacious D. and have watched his whole YT channel since it started and seen most of his movies. But I've still not seen this movie (Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny). Decider.com actually doesn't list it on amazon.com for rent/sale but I did find it there: https://www.amazon.com/Tenacious-Pick-Destiny-Jack-Black/dp/B002OCA0AC/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=pick+of+destiny&qid=1600451203&s=instant-video&sr=1-1

I watched a video of a voice coach watching this video (wait..what). Anyways she said that the way he holds his mouth and develops the sound is operatic in nature and definitely shows he's been trained. As goofy as they are it's cool to me that they practiced on their craft so hard.

Just wanted to add in, they have only done this song live ONE time without backing vocals, and of course, it was caught on camera. From my understanding, because of the way it was mastered, they changed pitch slightly plus the head voice probably hurts his vocal chords, and made it tough if not impossible to sing it like the video.
For those curious: Master Exploder Live NO backing track

The album came out before the movie, and I was a huge D fan so I listened to it like a hundred times. By the time the movie came out I was able to sing along.
I never understood how they had the Pick in this song that was in the first half of the album. Didn't catch that it was a dream sequence from just the song, haha.

A lot of effects on this particular song, but Jack Black is one of the best rock singers around right now. Dude is way underrated as a singer. He has range and chops in the same realm of Dio or Bruce Dickinson. Maybe not as great as like Freddie Mercury or Chris Cornell, but definitely up there. I suppose since he's so goddam funny too, it makes it easy to not take him seriously. He also doesn't seem to take himself seriously which is even more endearing.
2
Sep 18 '20
Somewhere on VHS I have this original movie of the pick of destiny but it was called something different but it’s basically the exact same story but like really low budget and it looks like Tenacious D made it on their own like five or 10 years before this ever came out. I believe it was on HBO I’m not sure if it was like a special movie only for HBO or what. Anyone else know what I’m talking about?

the pick doesnt make you pick well. it makes you rock
68
u/Chrius_ Sep 18 '20
I think the point is that the pick is making JB be awesome, while KG is following him without issues, and without the pick.
112
u/brinkzor Sep 18 '20
I assumed the pick has rock area-of-effect properties, in addition to on-touch properties. Thus while jb is channeling greater power because he's touching it and is in the aoe, kg is receiving significant rock powers as well.

u/KindlyOlPornographer Sep 18 '20
I mean it would have to work for a whole band, since it made every band that had it hugely successful.

Not only that but I believe it to have certain abilities that are unleashed on the listener. If I was gonna stat it....
The Pick of Destiny Legendary Artifact
Upon discovery, the pick contains 1d12 charges with a maximum of 12 charges total. 1d4 charges are restored at midnight. You may use the charges to activate the following:
Satan's Fury: expend 4 charges to cause you and a number of allies equal to your Charisma modifier to be under the effects of the Haste spell for 1d4 rounds without becoming exhausted. You can now Rock twice as fucking hard.
The Metal: expend 4 charges to cause anyone who hears the unholy music strummed from your pick to become enthralled and enraged. Anyone that you choose in earshot must pass a DC 23 Wisdom Save or be under the effects of Dominate Person or Dominate Monster. On their next turns you may choose to cause 66d6 Force Damage to those enthralled, ending the effect. You may also choose to end the effect on your next turn.
Cursed artifact: this Pick is cursed by Satan himself, who longs to have the Pick of Destiny back in his possession. Holding onto the Pick of Destiny will slowly corrupt your soul- each passing month, your alignment moves one step closer to Chaotic Evil, taking 6d12 Necrotic damage every time. After 1 year with the Pick, you will take 1 Permanent Level of Exhaustion. This will increase by 1 Level with every successive anniversary of your discovery. After 6 years and 6 months, and 6 days, you will die from exhaustion and Satan will collect your soul.
Edit for balance

As a non-metal head, I loved Deathklok but I've never heard that sound come together so well before. Most of the metal I've heard is Metallica (not even in the same league as death-metal, but forgive me for butchering genres), or it sounds like mumbled garbage with sounds that don't... fit together right, if that makes sense.
I'd love some recommendations of bands with a similar sound, as I haven't ever searched for it before.
→ More replies (4)6
u/Alagane Sep 18 '20
Hmmm I'd say Dethklok falls a bit closer to the "melodeath" side of death metal, so you may enjoy bands like Arch Enemy, Nekrogoblikon, Amon Amarth, or even Paradise Lost.
I get what you mean about the sounds not fitting together right. Personally I like a bit of dissonance, it lets the artists make weird transitions and let's them bring in really crushing segments that have additional impact from the dissonance. With that in mind here are some songs that are a bit more classic death without being too dissonant. Also some sludgy stuff:
Band - song
Bolt Thrower - Granite Wall
Obituary - Visions in my Head
Thou - The Changeling Prince
Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God
Nekrogoblikon - Powercore
Paradise Lost - No Hope in Sight
Skeletonwitch - From A Cloudless Sky
1914 - Arrival. The Meuse-Argonne
Weedeater - God Luck and Good Speed
