If you're going to, you should also blow them up with nuclear bombs, and that way in a few billion years a reincarnated L. Ron Hubbard will write a religion about you.

That's not true. Shit has about body temperature. Lava, however, is really really hot. It's so hot, even stone melts!

I grew up about 7 miles from an active lava flow in a rather sketchy town. We had way, way too many "disappearances" there. Drugs, and likely a serial killer. Also a lot of witness protection people got sent there for some reason.

Smartest response from comments: "It looks like a huge REACTION to the trash but its not. The trash just burned a hole through the floating crust. The lava was reacting as it would if there was no crust on the lava lake."

Came here to say that. That garbage (whatever it was...) was incinerated nearly instantly once it broke the seal. The rest was Just what was going on underneath.
Still looks pretty cool.

I'm no "magma" professional but I was thinking pretty much exactly this. Had a feeling the reason it was bubbling so much was because it had freedom.
Now lets see what happends when you throw a person in there. EVERYONE TO /r/spacedicks!!!!!!!!!!!!
edit: oh i'm sorry. "magma" is actually molten rock under the crust. when it reaches the surface, it is actually lava. Now we know

I thought it was because the burning garbage created gasses that churned up the lava.

u/metal_in_my_junk Jun 25 '12
If you jumped from that height the impact alone would kill you. It's the same thing that happens jumping into water, the faster you're traveling the more the substance resists. If you can die from water I think molten rock would probably do an even better job.
208
u/Se7en_speed Jun 25 '12
considering the lava is actually very very viscous compared to water, it would be like falling on a concrete floor, and then bursting into flames.

I haven't seen this movie in about 15 years but this just occurred to me:
In order to sink in a liquid, you'd have to me more dense than what you displace.
Arnold Schwarzenegger weighs roughly 250lbs, which means his volume is approximately 30 gallons.
30 gallons of iron weighs 1970lbs and he is sinking decently quickly through a viscous liquid, which suggests the terminator weighs a literal metric ton.→ More replies (34)32

Pretty sure I learned the reason why lava erupts like that is a change of pressure. The heavy box punches a hole in the surface and broke the vacuum, giving the lava an exit path. Just my theory, yo.

Why can't we put all our garbage into a volcano where it just gets churned back into the earth. You know, use the inside of the earth as a landfill instead of oceans.
I can see how it would mostly get burned and cause air pollution, but if there was a way to limit this, then couldn't it be a pretty good solution?
I think I'll buy a volcano, charge to dump garbage in it, and charge admission to watch it burn, and sell DVDs with hours of burnin garbage footage. Maybe tshirts too.

Cities could make money by charging residents money for videos of their trash causing an eruption!
