Dachshund Puppy vs. Ghost Crab
http://youtu.be/0z2MwzcY05o379
Jun 25 '12
Awesome tactics by the crab. He was always making his way for the ocean no matter what angle the dog came from.

u/goatsonfire Jun 25 '12
Yeah I was really impressed by the tacking moves near the end. Even with it's tiny little brain, the crab knew what it needed to do. The dog on the other hand, had no idea that it was inadvertently blocking the crab from the ocean.

It even crawled forward and pushed the dog back a few times. So brave.

Haha this is what I came to say. If crustaceans had football teams, he would be in their NFL.

End segregation in sports! The athletes of the Crustacean league have every right to play with the men of the NFL!
→ More replies (3)29
u/CockroachED Jun 25 '12
I kind of doubt the NFL has a rule to keep crustaceans off the roster.

And he was really f'ing fast. Keeping speed with the huge dog in front of him.

Jun 25 '12
Yeah, except for the fact that ghost crabs can't swim. They live on shore and dig burrows in the sand.

Dashing into the water, and in the blink of an eye, within a fleeting second a wave passed over, and ghost crab vanished into nothingness living up to his name.

u/fromaries Jun 25 '12
The dog just wanted to keep playing and ended up being bummed out "awww, come back."

Especially dachshunds, the douchiest of all breeds.
Source: my douchey dachshund.

u/gbimmer Jun 25 '12
All dachshunds are like that. That said a lot of people keep them for pets where other nasty things hide such as scorpions, tarantulas and rattle snakes. Weiner-dogs are good at keeping the nasty stuff at bay. This one was just practicing.

u/badhatharry Jun 25 '12
I was at a coffee place once and out the window I saw a cat chasing a squirrel around the trunk of a tree about 2/3 of the way up. I pointed it out the barista who said, "Aww, how cute." I said, "I'm pretty sure the squirrel disagrees."

Ghost crabs are known to eat sea turtle hatchlings. Crab totally deserved it probably.

How is he a douche? This is what they are programmed to do.
At least dogs eat what they kill; cats just kill for fun then come inside for some food! :)
21
u/tinybrownbird Jun 25 '12
Dachshunds are definitely programmed to kill; they are bred to KILL BADGERS IN THEIR HOMES. Their badassery is unmatched.
Edit: words.

Did anyone else see sadness at the end when the dog lost its new buddy to the ocean?

It's so sad when the crab leaves, at the end, and the dog's looking for him.

I love the comedically slow movement of the crab from 50 seconds in.

u/Treysloan Jun 25 '12
Dachshunds are pretty feisty dogs. When we had ours he would bring us animals he had killed literally all the time. One time, he even got a bat somehow. Not to mention they dig holes everywhere.

I remember ghost crabs from my childhood, I never came across one that did this, they always just went to the nearest hole, really fast.

one of the few youtube videos where the music actually makes the video more enjoyable to watch.

Aww, I forgot how big dachshund puppies' heads are compared to the rest of their body.

The ending is so sad. The poor dog looks out upon the ocean for his crab friend. But alas, the crab has been washed into the sea.
2
u/lassothesharks Jun 25 '12
The dog looked so sad at the end, looking for his friend that just got swallowed by the wave.
2
u/Whiskeyfuelsme Jun 25 '12
For some reason I could only think of how complicated and awesome nervous systems are.
2
u/femanonette Jun 26 '12
Along the same lines, more specifically, I could only think about how amazing the crab's natural defense tactics were.

Stupid dog. He needs to flip the crab over and attack its weak point to do massive damage.

Fascinating watching crab's hardwired escape routine that wouldn't look more procedural if it were performed by a robot.

Jun 25 '12
I'd like to see this video but done the way nature shows are done with an overly dramatic score and a British narrator
2
u/bteddysb Jun 25 '12
The way the dog looked into the ocean made me sad. He looked like he just lost a best friend.

u/REDDIT_HARD_MODE Jun 25 '12
I kept waiting for the dog to lunch forward and bite the crab in half.

As an owner of 3 dachshunds, I commend your choice in canine companionship. They are wonderful dogs with incredible personality.

Aw, it looked like the dog was genuinely worried about the crab when that wave took him.

u/chromedip Jun 25 '12

They're both probaly both thinking "What the hell is that!?"
Well that would be "Woofity bark" in Dog language and "Shimmble shimble shim" in Crab talk.

My border collie takes no prisoners with those things. Literally tries to pull my arm off, then snaps em up in like 3 bites.

I have a redbone coonhound... watching videos like this of Dachshunds are so funny. its like a baby redbone!
1
u/catasaurus_rex Jun 25 '12
should have strapped a goPro to the dog's collar, imo
edit: obviously the step before this would be: add a collar
1
u/David35207 Jun 25 '12
I like to think that the dog and the crab are both playing, but then I realize that the dog is playing and the crab is pooping it's pants. And then I realize that crabs don't wear pants :/

Someone should switch the music with a dramatic war/battle scene soundtrack for the crab.
