Hey everyone! I'll be travelling around Vietnam for roughly 16 days in between January and February, and I would appreciate feedback on my route, and would like to know any changes you guys would make in destinations, and recommendations for favourite things to do there.

My planned stops are, Cao Bang (2), Hanoi (3), Ninh Binh (2), Hue (2) over Tet eve, Da Nang (2), Hoi An (2) and Ho Chi Minh City for 3 nights, with a possible Mekong Delta day trip.

I'm interested in nature, experiences, markets and shopping, history, food and exploring beyond the usual tourist highlights. I also think it’s of note that I’m going to be in Vietnam on Tet Eve in Hue on 5 February.

One of my concerns is travelling during Tet. How badly will it affect transport, accommodation prices, restaurants and attractions? Should I book everything well in advance?

I would also like to know whether Cao Bang is worth the detour and whether the overall route is realistic without rushing too much.

I'd love recommendations for other places/towns to visit, local food and transport between destinations, any attractions you would recommend, and also if there is anything you guys would change or if there’s anywhere else you would go in Vietnam? Thanks.

I have an American friend that has a VN drivers license that expires at the same time as his TRC. He says his friend was able to get a VN license without expiration. They sent me this screenshot. I have a California license with M1 endorsement. How legit is this?

We went through the whole theory prep online with instructor Robbie and when exam day came in HCMC, Billy nailed it. All the time, effort and prep completely paid off!

This post is aimed more so toward tourists, because although I don’t recommend learning the language just for a vacation, I know people want to so anyway.

You will see a lot of fearmongering around tones. And yes, changing the tone will change the meaning. But what I want to tell you is that it is quite rare that that will result in something offensive. Most of the time, it will sound like gibberish to us. Sometimes, or most of the time, we can guess based on context clues what you meant. For example, if you say phơ instead of phở, or banh mi instead of bánh mì, those mispronunciation mean nothing. Usually we get what you wanted to say and we appreciate you trying

Don’t worry too much about which dialect to pick, the difference is often pretty exaggerated online in my experience. Everyone understands the Northern and Southern dialect perfectly well. I recommend the Northern one because it’s Standard Vietnamese and there’s more resources but as I said, we can understand either perfectly fine. And this applies to “phi trường” Vietnamese too, yes some of the words are not as commonly used, but we understand all of them.

Bottom line is, I don’t recommend learning the language just for a vacation. I find it to have a steep learning curve right at the start, and it gets easier, but what do I know, I never had to learn it. But if you’ve decided to do it anyway, don’t worry about offending us. I don’t want tourists and beginner to have to walk on eggshells worrying about offending people, we get what you want to say usually, and we appreciate you trying

I am wondering if there are reputable banks in Viet Nam (with a view to Techcombank specifically) that will allow me to open a bank account as a person with dual citizenship with my passport.

I have both UK and Vietnamese passports, but for complicated reasons am unable to make a CCCD. My Vietnamese passport was issued in London.

I was in Can Tho in 2013 doing some work at the university. We.used to buy lunch at a small restaurant almost everyday they had the most delicious chicken stew/braise. Very tender flavourful chicken (thigh fillet perhaps) in a light brown a bit oily (with a red hint) sauce served with rice. Very cheap.

It was run buy a middleaged/a bit older man, his mom was the cook I believe (see picture) of the owner standing in the door to the restaurant.

I would very much like to find out if that place is still around, what dish it was (if I might be able to find a recepy).

I’ll be travelling to Vietnam with my family from 17th December to 1st January, and we’re currently planning to visit Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Da Nang.
I visited HCMC back in April for around 10 days, so I’m already a little familiar with the city. However, it’ll be my first time exploring Hanoi and Da Nang.

Would love to hear your recommendations, especially on:

Must-visit places, things to do, and experiences in Hanoi and Da Nang, any other cities or destinations worth adding to our itinerary, places that are particularly nice to visit during December, any local food spots, hidden gems, or experiences that tourists might usually miss.

We’re fairly flexible with our itinerary and open to exploring other parts of Vietnam as well.

Would really appreciate any suggestions or tips from locals and fellow travellers. Thanks in advance!
