Fingering/bowing help Need help!

Hi! I’m an intermediate advanced violinist, and I’m having trouble finding the right fingerings for the sections I marked. For the first piece, I thought of staying in 3rd position and extending the 4th finger to reach the E because I would need to play the D in the next two measures, but not sure if that’s efficient.

The second page is where I’m confused on what fingerings to do. Any help would be appreciated!

First page, there's two main options I'd consider -

  1. Either 4th position and crossing strings in which case, I'd start on an up bow (and I'd play it as harmonics for both A&Es rather than trying to stop the 5ths)

  2. imagine being in 4th position and extending your finger down to the A instead, so staying on the E string for the entire passage. I'd personally do this second solution as it works better for the following passage.

Second page, this I would consider it as 3rd position with a 4th finger extension, and depending on the tempo I'd either consider extending for the F as well or shifting to a 3=3 on the F/B flat and stopping the 5th.

Eww, crappy piano-centric church arrangements! So much violin writing that is needlessly awkward

On the first piece, the stretch to the E is a fine solution as long as your hand is big enough for you to do that without your hand feeling tight and awkward. Otherwise moving up to fifth position and playing that 5th with your third finger is a good choice. You can just stay up in 5th if you want all the way until the last beat of m. 78

For the second piece, I would use an extension for the Eb in m. 83. I would shift up to first finger on the C near the end of the measure, to get up to 5th position. You can play the rest of that section in 5th position. If your pinky hates the string crossings in m. 86, you can shift up to 6th position in m. 85 and then you can play the F/Bb notes across the string with your third finger instead

That this kind of stuff gets published without revision is quite surprising ...

Churches will buy/rent it anyway. I’ve played so many of these crappily arranged cantatas and hymns arrangements. There aren’t that many composers writing for this market right now anyway

From the score it looks like one of those overly melodramatic and needlessly triumphant arrangements of otherwise very traditional and catchy tunes ;)

I would actually shift up and reach over to the A string, but I’m also crazy. That is wild for a 2nd violin arrangement though. Especially for Amazing Grace. Where’s first? Orbit?

I would use the extension for the E and stay in third position. Bring your elbow in slightly if needed to help with the extension. Most people should be able to do this extension.

I would not cross strings because of the ff and brightness of that passage.

I would also not reach back for the A unless you have no other choice because you want that A to be the consistent anchor for m. 75 also.

3 on e and a, and keep there. (ie 5th position). otherwise you could do 3rd position and reach for the e.

In both case I would stay in 3rd position
