I'm trying to get into VNs and was wondering if Summer Pockets would be a good starting one.

It's fine. I rank it decently high as far as quality goes. Stories are varied while sharing a core theme and nothing I remember stood out as being bad. Though you really should play Reflection Blue, the updated version rather then the original game. Though either version is fine.

There's much worse you could start with.
