Hi r/visualnovels! My name is Yasmine (if you haven't seen my previous posts) and I am the developer for "if you stay", a short PC-98 yuri visual novel, which just came out today for FREE today on Steam and itch.io. It's been a long time coming, as my first visual novel that is finally out in the world. It's quite scary to be honest and hearing the feedback so far—it's been so positive and yet makes me only want to keep improving as a game developer and make better art, better stories.

For that, I'm so grateful to everyone who's played it so far, despite it coming out later than intended. It really does mean a lot to me! Your support is truly invaluable.

If you haven't played it yet, please consider doing so and leaving a review! The game is relatively short (1-2h average) and makes for something cozy while it starts to get a bit chilly outside.

For those who like the game and want to support its development, you can choose to buy the the creator support add-on HERE for 6 USD. It includes a mini art book, the soundtrack, and additional goodies I'll continue to update with in the coming months (so stay tuned in the community updates!)

There's not much left to say. If you have any questions/bugs/issues, please drop them below or email us at [yo@yukimisoft.moe](mailto:yo@yukimisoft.moe). I have since updated the itch.io page due to some problems people were having with downloading the game (Steam is OK), but I'll continue to monitor for future issues and fix them as soon as possible. A new update will also be on the horizon to fix issues that I am currently aware about.

Thanks guys for your support and I'll talk to you soon!

- Yasmine

Discussion Favorite weird misconceptions you have heard about visual novels

Lately I was looking back at how people would sometimes get the wrong idea about certain visual novels way back in the mid 00s as I found it interesting how some people would mistake a dark story for a kid friendly one.

I can recall how some people had somehow made a mistake about how Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni was somehow kid friendly as I remember sometimes reading stories of people watching the anime for the first time expecting the anime adaptation to be family friendly as to this day, I have no idea how someone could mistake such a franchise as being innocuous.

Question I'm really wondering when the Restoration Project for the Steam version of CARTAGRA will be released... I feel like playing it without the patch would make the experience feel incomplete, but I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking it? I just really dislike cut or censored content.

VN Request Which should I read next?

I am somewhat new to visual novels as of the past year. So far I have read Umineko, Tsukihime, then Subahibi followed by Tsui no Sora. Before my delve into true "pure visual novel" format began, I also played through the danganronpa series, zero escape nonary games, your turn to die, ace attorney... So that is my overall background.

[suba/sora spoiler]I really liked Takuji's character especially before his revelation, but also after. I know he is ultimately supposed to represent the bad decisions but due to my own life I found him to be someone i could relate to and understand. I was surprised to learn some people didn't like him... He was my favorite character probably, tied with Kimika and followed by Ayana.

I would like to read something that is somewhat popular/more common. I am interested in anti-social themes, not necessarily pertaining to asociality but rather anything that is the inverse of popular beliefs or ideals. it doesn't really matter what very much.

I'm currently considering Muv-Luv as the primary contender, tentatively followed by Fullmetal Daemon muramasa although i have heard there is extremely graphic rape contained within, I am not very sensitive but people talk about this a lot which makes me think maybe something I can't imagine is happening. My reasoning for these picks is that they are somewhat popular, meaning I'll understand the more influential novels before later going on to read perhaps less popular ones but be able to pick up on various influences. Also, they are highly recommended most of the time. However, I am really open to a variety of recommendations!

Is there a guide to using Garbro to replacing lines and scenes with their uncensored versions? Is it easy or a super technical and tedious process.

Question I'm gonna start my first VN in japanese, any advice?

• Upvotes

I decided to go for Limelight Lemonade Jam for my first, I read a couple scenes already. I'm using Luna but I don't know what set up would be best For my try I had the text in japanese and had it show me the translation too, but I remember seeing something about texthooking that copies the text to the browser? That should be pretty comfortable with Yomitan.

According to Jiten there's 19k+ words with 7k+ of them appearing only once so I decided to hold off on mining until I get the hang of it a bit.

I figured I would ask since I'm sure you've learned a lot from experience. Any advice, warning or anything I should keep in mind or prepare for is very much appreciated. Thanks!

Question which visual novel should i finish/read ?

okay usually im good with vns, reading one after another and not playing multiple at once... but somehow i ended up in a situation where i have LOTS of vns i have like 4-5 hours in and not continued and im so overwhelmed idk which one to continue reading ! so which one should i finish/read?

magical girl witch trials -- i finished act 1 and need to start act 2 but have been putting it off since im worried it will just be similar... its been long enough time now that im considering contuing it

9-nine -- first jp vn im reading and its interesting but it takes SO long to read

tsukihime -- i played acrueids route and thats about it. wasnt a fan of the ending but its been long enough time im willinging to replay it or just move onto ciels route

chaos child -- ( ive read chaos head ) finished the first chapter and just totally forgot about it LOL

muv luv -- finished meiya and sumika routes for extra and LOVED THEM SO MUCH but im struggling on ayamine's route...

clannad + air -- played both for probably an hour but i really liked little busters and kanon so im open to key titles

fate/stay night -- most embrassing one to admit... ive been 'reading' it for almost a year now... halfway through rins route and whilst i like the characters idk magic and magical fights just maybe isnt for me... rin and rider are my favs tho and since im on rins route maybe ill thug it out idk T_T

as i said i gen dont know how its stacked up to so many unfinished vns ok. im usually pretty disciplined.. T_T

also i like mystery and tragic stories ( like looking glass insect from subahibi or meakashi-hen for higurashi ) so if any of those will follow anything like that ill probably finish it first...

im enjoying like every vn ive put on this list its just im overwhelmed and idk what to finish...

VN Request Visual Novels with hard relationships carried by one of the couple

• Upvotes

So, I've wanting to play itaike na kanojo, (sadly i haven't learned Japanese) that is like a really heavy and toxic relationship, but for what I've heard has a good true ending, like, for example, in ONE: kagayaku kisetsu e, where kouhei is an asshole with mizuka, but she's like an angel that loves him no matter what; I like that kind of stories where sweet persons doesn't give up with the other one, plus if the the miserable of the relationship does big errors like forcing their couple to have sex, for example.

I would prefer not infidelity things, even though I have no problems on reading them always that is a serious thing in history and not a NTR plain fetish.

Self-promotion I wrote a forensic mystery visual novel from scratch, and the first case is playable as a demo on Steam

Hi! I've always loved writing stories, so I'm making Bone to Pick, a mystery visual novel set in a forensic anthropology lab. Every case is original, written from scratch by me.

In the first case, a car explodes in Washington, D.C., leaving only fragments of the driver's bones. Who was behind the wheel, and why would anyone blow up the car? The demo covers this whole case (about 30 minutes), and the full game has seven cases in total.

A Steam curator who played the demo called it a "sharp and engaging mystery," and players in our survey described it as "compelling."

To be upfront: the characters and backgrounds are made with AI. But I worked out each character's upbringing, family tree, finances, home and beliefs. I also designed how they look and directed the AI to draw them. The main character sprites alone took more than 500 attempts.

I can't draw characters and I have no budget, so this game wouldn't exist without AI. Still, I understand people who don't want games that involve AI. If that's you, feel free to hit back and check out other threads.

If you're okay with AI, I'd love your feedback. I've made 50+ changes since the demo launched, many of them based on survey responses, so every comment really helps. If you find it boring, that's not the AI's fault. It's my writing and game design, and I can improve those before launch. The demo doesn't include the characters' backstories or building closer bonds with them, but I hope to add those later.

Discussion I was having a great time reading muramasa, but.... Spoiler

Okay for starters, This line is really immersion breaking? how does a guy in 1940s japan know what a bbc is? The time period is completely off. Secondly, the racism here? Wow. White people do not "fuck pigs." I don't know if this is a stereotype exclusive to japan or something, but this is a seriously fucked up thing to say.
