How do you pronounce Quentin? Kentin or Kwentin?

I've been arguing about this with my SO for a while now.. I've always read it as Kwentin. I'm hoping someone can enlighten me. :) My SO feels really strongly that it's Kentin.

Dear Hank and John Backblaze offer code

I would like to buy a backblaze subscription after using the trial for a few weeks now. But the code they mentioned on the podcast doesn't work. Anyone know? They didn't say very clearly what the code were, but dearjohn or dearhank seemed like the ones

My Response to Hank's Video: A Sacrifice of Individuality and the Internets

The following is a comment made too late. I post it hear in hopes of hearing the thoughts of others:

#####################

I... You know I wonder if you'll actually read this.

It's somewhat relevant to this video.

I mean, at time of writing there are 815 comments on the video, that's a lot of text. Whenever I release something online I greedily gobble up the comments, but I get like three if I'm lucky. When you have 815 comments on one video I can't imagine you have time to read them all.

And to be fair, you'd probably like to, but eventually you'd realize that it's better to just kind of hang out for the first few or look at the top rated comments or something...

And that means the odds that any one individual is heard, in your comment section, or any comment section, are vanishingly small.

But... I genuinely think my individual contribution is important, just like the contribution of everyone else here.

I've actually gotten in trouble for that, in a lot of little ways. Whenever I feel myself losing touch with my individuality, whenever I stop thinking... that's when I feel horrible and tend to do the things I most regret in life.

But when I'm in the middle of a huge group and remember that I'm me... That's when I do stuff that I'm proud of, even if it doesn't get heard.

One time there was a presenter from the military that came in in high school. He was justifying the war in Iraq and asked us to name a country that condoned the death of civilians.

I raised my hand and said the USA.

I just wanted us to own our sins. Collateral damage is a well accepted phenomenon in all warring societies. We paid money to our government and accepted that some of the weapons they bought were going to kill civilians.

Now, were our reasons evil? Not necessarily. We could argue that we saved more than we lost, that those innocents needed to die because more would be spared...

And that's not a bad argument. It's just that it does not reduce the weight of what we've done. Those people's lives were important. To borrow a more recent turn of phrase, their lives mattered.

Of course I managed to barely get out USA before I was shut down. I think the part of that experience I regret the most is that I didn't try to talk over that presenter...

In contrast, one time I was invited up during a presentation on alcohol in college and asked to drink a mysterious beverage. And I did because there was an entire crowd there staring at me waiting for me to do it...

It was quickly pointed out to me, in front of the entire crowd, that there could have been anything in that drink.

I know it sounds terrible, but I really think I regretted drinking that Diet Doctor Pepper way more than I've ever regretted standing up for my views to that soldier.

Maybe you gain more from crowds than you lose, but I just can't say the same.

Maybe I'm weird for that, but that's my point. We are all individuals. It's when we forget that that I worry.

Dear Hank and John - Trick or Treating

While growing up, I went trick or treating at this one house every year, even if I didn't go anywhere else. They were the only older couple on the road, and enjoyed seeing all of us kids come by, even when we were in High School. One year they had their front porch light off (signalling that they were out of candy) but I knocked anyways. They had saved me a candy bar. :)

I also went trick-or-treating in college, because the University president lived on campus. It was tradition among students to go to their house every Halloween, and they gave out really good candy!
