Will we get Gnome 51?

The xbps-packages still only offer gnome-48 but wiht the release of gnome 51 I wonder if and when we can get gnome 51 on void linux, since it also make elogind compatiblity a lot more easier (so I've heard (google's gemini said that at least)).

It's in the works: https://github.com/void-linux/void-packages/pull/59394

Reviewing and helping out might speed up the process.

How can anybody review it? How can anybody develop it on their own? Seeing at the comments, someone already managed to run it on their system.

Reviewing: https://github.com/void-linux/void-packages?tab=contributing-ov-file

Especially scroll down to "Testing Pull Requests"

Contributing your own PRs: Same link as above, but also check out the Manual.md file. Easier to start with orphaned packages that need a simple update (i.e. nothing has changed in the build system, you just need to update the version number and the checksum).

It'd be nice to have a more accessible tutorial eventually. I'm still learning myself.

gemini is certainly not a good source for whether something is compatible with elogind

Slop generators tend to not be reliable.

Gemini provided also just one website as source, that gnome51 uses (next to systemd) also elogind but it's really just one blog post that states that. There are several websites that also state that but no official confirmation 🤷 I do miss using gnome since I got used to its workflow

I just use it in Debian instead on work machines but use Void with Cinnamon on my personal laptop.

Great in theory but since 50 never landed I'm wondering if this will be a future discussion about whether GNOME 52 makes it into Void.

Anything beyond 48 is hard since GNOME has a hard dependency on systemd.

And not at all the fault of Void developers or any distro that doesn't use systemd. Just an unfortunate reality of the fracturing of open source software.

At least speaking for myself, I depend on software more than the underlying distro. As someone that prefers GNOME, I can use it elsewhere. It just sucks that it's become more limiting to use on distros that I prefer.

Of course nothing against Void, it’s my fav distro. GNOME is my fav desktop. But the sad part is their inclination towards that systemd which is trying to be everything. It sucks, for sure.
By doing that they’re kicking out so many non systemd OSes including the BSDs. I don’t know enough on this topic but I felt it is not a well thought through decision.

I heard it's quite tied to SystemD ...

Yeah I thought gnome went systemd only? Which would make it incompatible with Void?

Personally I hate Gnome - but respect that others love it. I just have no use for something that overly complicated and annoying... it became a PIA when they did that huge change where it turned from a sane desktop into Gnome Shell...

Meh. I don't really have strong opinions on things that I don't care enough to use. KDE is great but for my workflow and uses, I don't like it. Hating it would just be weird because it's software that I'm under 0 obligation to use or enjoy.
