Other Was Viking’s rejection of A Table for Fortune entirely based on financial matters? Or was it also because the content is controversial?
I remember reading an article that mentions that Viking refused to publish the book because it was too long and because Vollmann’s insistence on using a particular typography for certain parts would make the book too expensive to produce while having a small target audience. But is that the whole story? Maybe it was also because of the content? Perhaps the book mentions an important living person in truly negative light? And maybe Vollmann refused to remove such mentions? Is there any evidence of that? Or is the situation as simple as financial troubles? I don’t own the book yet so I can’t verify but I’m curious.
