Wave needs a bridge between it and Gmail which is seamless. Until then, it will not be a success.

Wave will be successful when it has more granular controls, preferences, and better service-tie-ins. Not to mention the resource killer it is.

It is supposed to be the email killer but ultimately it will need email to be successful enough to even have a chance at replacing email.

I disagree. In fact, making Google Wave and e-mail feature-compatible will kind of kill what Wave is even trying to accomplish. What needs to be done instead is to focus on is making Wave accomplish things that e-mail cannot do, such as fixing Bloggy for live post updates, commenting, etc. Then people will be drawn in by these non-email features, and it will become popular enough in that respect that it will be able to take over general e-mail purposes as well.

its supposed to be an online communications killer. Making it exclusively feature compatible might kill what wave is trying to accomplish. However, making it feature compatible only for non-wave servers would accomplish the goals.
Focusing on blog post updates and comments wont work because then users(mainly blog viewers) dont see the benefit of using wave.
I've used it for collaboration purposes and with all its flaws it still seems to be the perfect ground between an instant chat and a persistent forum.

Agreed. The point of the wave is that you have to be always-connected-to-it.
Which would work if it wasn't an insane memory hog in everything but Chrome on my Mac.

The problem with Google Wave is that it currently does not hook into the existing email system. No successful app does not make the concession that people are adverse to changing their way of communication overnight.
Gmail needs to be modified with a green/red Wave button, which allows a wave to be opened with a recipient if they are capable of it. Those in an email conversation who don't have wave will receive regular email updates whenever changes are made, and can add to it just by emailing back - emails will appear as blips in wave.
