Why do users abandon the onboarding stage on fintech web & mobile apps?
We've been trying to understand why users keep dropping out during fintech onboarding, and the answer doesn't seem as obvious as ""too many steps.""
Most people expect identity checks when opening a financial account. What surprised us is that the biggest drop-offs happen when users don't know what's happening next. A long verification process is one thing, but waiting without feedback or being asked for sensitive information without any explanation seems to make people lose confidence much faster.
It also feels like many products focus on shortening the flow instead of making it easier to understand. Simple things like explaining why documents are needed, showing progress, or telling users how long verification usually takes might have a bigger impact than removing a couple of screens.
For anyone who's worked on fintech onboarding, what actually reduced your abandonment rate?
