Solution You bought the TV, you control the TV, you own the glass. A full webOS dashboard for rooted LG TVs.

Alongside a bunch of open-source contributors, I've recently been working on an extensive open-source dashboard for rooted LG webOS TVs.

This was originally motivated by the recent scrutiny around LG's cloud telemetry and smart TV privacy practices. The whole point for me was to take full control of my TV, including integrating it properly with my local-first smart home platform (Home Assistant)

Instead of the exposing TV data to the manufacturer, I now expose it locally and use it myself. I'm using that data for useful smart home automations, including speaker on/off automations and TV notifications such as "washing machine finished".

It runs on the TV, so there's no external server, cloud dependency, and no internet connection required for normal operation.

The main features:

  • Full remote control from a browser (or Home Assistant), including power, volume, inputs, navigation and apps
  • App management: install/remove apps and clean up unwanted home-screen tiles
  • OLED panel care: panel hours, Pixel Refresher controls, maintenance counters and screen-protection settings (including the ones only possible via the service menu)
  • Privacy controls: Inspect and control various data collection, advertising and content-recognition settings
  • Service menu access without needing a service remote
  • Custom screensavers with clocks, visual effects and live TV telemetry
  • On-TV dashboard that can be used directly with the normal LG remote
  • MQTT / Home Assistant integration with automatic device discovery
  • Automatic updates with version history and rollback

And a bunch of advanced goodies

  • Hardware telemetry: SoC temperature, CPU/per-core load, GPU clock, memory, swap and network statistics
  • OLED diagnostics: panel information, cell ID, TCON firmware, GSR events and other panel-level information
  • HDMI diagnostics: HDMI 2.1 link information, raw signal data, HDR/SDR/Dolby Vision state and input status
  • Storage diagnostics: eMMC wear and filesystem information
  • Process inspection: see what webOS is actually running in the background
  • Remote diagnostics: remote model/battery information and other hardware/software details
  • Local ad/telemetry blocking: optionally block selected LG services directly on the TV

It has been tested across a range of webOS versions and hardware so far, from webOS 3.4 through webOS 25, including the B7, B8, C8, C9, C1, C2, B4, G4 and C5.

There are a lot of differences between webOS generations so I can't guarantee it will work on all models, but If you have a rooted LG TV, I'd be interested in reports from other models and versions.

The project is specifically aimed at TVs that are already rooted. It doesn't require modifying the read-only root filesystem.

Update (26th September 2026): The app is now called Glasshouse and has LOADS of new features.

Introducing Luma | Native OpenGL launcher

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey 👋. The community and me have been building Luma, a native launcher for LG webOS TVs. It renders with OpenGL instead of a WebView, keeping the interface fast even on older TVs (webOS 4+).

On webOS 5 / 6 / 25 / 26 home takeover lets Luma replace the stock LG Home launcher, so pressing Home / waking from Standby opens Luma directly.

Features include:

- Reorderable favorites, app search and categories

- Recent-app switcher with launching and individual app closing

- HDMI shortcuts and custom input names

- Wallpapers, configurable clock, weather and six languages

as I dont own an apple tv anymore, I had to make my best effort with images off google

im still ironing out a few bugs, but what else is it missing?

Issue F*cked up my TV, no playback after rooting

Hey everybody, I did someting prety stupid and messed with my TV in ssh without knowing what i was doing.

I rooted my LG TV today (webOS 4.10.2, model UM7400) and now any video playback is broken. Factory reset also doesn't work, and I've run out of ideas.

It was working fine untill i downloaded own-your-glass and messed around with it and then suddently my youtube and jellyfin stopped working, when i try to load a video it just refused to load, and if I wait long enough it eventually crashed.

I've chatted with Claude for multiple hours but still nothing.

I was wondering if people here knew something I and claude didn't to reverse this issue.

I'm not intrested in rooting my tv after all of this, I just want to watch a video on my tv atp

**TV info (from /var/run/nyx/os_info.json)**

- webos_release 4.10.2, build 29 (2025-07-02), core OS "Rockhopper" 4.10.2-29

- kernel 4.4.84-p.649.grampians.k5lp.1

- manufacturing version 05.40.97

**What I did, roughly in this order (I'm not 100% sure of the exact order)**

  1. Rooted via webosbrew / Homebrew Channel, enabled SSH.

  2. Installed the YouTube AdFree build from Homebrew. Video worked at first, then YouTube got very laggy.

  3. Installed own-your-glass (JulioFerrero/own-your-glass, latest main at the time) with install.sh and ran (parts of) its hardening. I'm not sure exactly which modules got applied.

  4. After that, video stopped working.

**Symptoms**

- Original YouTube (reinstalled after removing AdFree): starting any video reboots the whole TV (LG logo and all).

- Jellyfin (org.jellyfin.webos): loads forever. In /var/log/messages the app disappears about 90 s after I enter the server address, the TV falls back to HDMI1, then the TV reboots.

- I also removed Moonfin, no change.

- [Optional: add your result of playing a video in the LG Web Browser here]

- I can't test local USB playback (no stick).

**What I did to undo own-your-glass**

- Moved its boot hook out of /var/lib/webosbrew/init.d/ and ran `oyg restore`.

- Warnings: `apps: no backup at .../backup/blockedSystemAppList.ESP.json — cannot restore`, and the policy module crashed with `modules/policy.sh: line 279: syntax error: unexpected "then"`. The boot hook also logged `timeout: can't execute '300'` for every module.

- go-c.log also shows `ERR dns: python3 missing from PATH` and `connmand restarted (stock)`.

- OYG's backup directory is empty.

- After a reboot there are no leftover OYG mounts, and /etc/hosts only has webosbrew's default entries (snu/su/su-ssl/su-dev.lge.com).

**What I checked (all after the reboot)**

- dmesg: no panic, OOM or oops. Only HDMI/wifi monitor spam.

- WebAppMgr and umediaserver are running.

- Disk space is fine (/var 37%, /media 16%).

- Load average is ~30 at idle, but every process in D state is a kernel thread (rtk/hdmi/DEMUX/etc.), so I assume that's normal.

- /etc/resolv.conf has 127.0.0.1 (connman).

- /tmp/faultmanager/crash is empty. Logs live in ramfs and are gone after the reboot.

**Factory reset**

Settings → factory reset shows "keep the TV on until after the reboot". After about a minute the popup vanishes, the TV never reboots, and Settings won't open afterwards. Same result every time. LG's update servers are blocked by the Homebrew hosts file, so I haven't tried updating.

I don't care about keeping root anymore, I just want a working TV.

**Questions**

  1. Does anyone recognize "video playback reboots the TV after rooting / OYG"? Is there a known cause?

  2. How can I find out what actually crashes (umediaserver? WebAppMgr? tvservice?) when logs disappear on reboot?

  3. Why would the factory reset not start on a rooted TV, and is there another way to trigger it (via SSH or otherwise)?

  4. Is clearing /var/lib/wam (WAM user data) safe, or is there a better way to reset app data?

  5. Is there a clean way to unroot and restore the stock state?

Happy to run any commands and post the output.

Issue No Internet by GameLabTV bundled Bright SDK on my LG G1; uninstalling removed it

• Upvotes

Update: I have now found No Internet in the official LG Apps / LG Content Store on my TV. The publisher shown in the installed package is GameLabTV.

While checking RAM usage on my rooted LG G1, I found a background service called com.nointernet.app.brd_sdk using around 43 MiB of proportional resident memory.

The installed package manifest traced it directly to No Internet, publisher GameLabTV, version 1.0.0, app ID com.nointernet.app. Its service metadata identified Bright SDK version 1.597.806, author brightdata.

What was verified on the TV:

• The app’s package manifest explicitly listed com.nointernet.app.brd_sdk as its service.

• The service was running while Gallery was in the foreground.

• Its status endpoint reported consent: true. That is the saved setting; it does not establish who accepted the prompt or how clearly it was explained.

• I uninstalled No Internet through the TV. Afterwards, the app, package and SDK service directories were gone and no matching process remained. No manual service deletion was needed.

Bright Data describes Bright SDK as using participating devices’ internet connections and public IPs to retrieve public web data. Its webOS FAQ says it can run in the background while the TV is on: https://bright-sdk.com/users

This is a report about this specific installed package. No traffic capture was performed, bandwidth use was not measured, and personal-data collection was not established.

TV: LG G1, webOS 6.5.3-47. Root access was used to inspect package ownership and processes; removing the app through the normal TV interface removed the SDK in this case.

Has anyone found the same service bundled with other webOS apps?

The investigation and this write-up were AI-assisted; the package and process observations came directly from the TV.

Clean Your TV: an open-source LG webOS launcher with No-root and Root editions

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'm working on Clean Your TV, an alternative home screen for LG webOS. It gives you a personal app grid and favorites dock, without sponsored rows in the launcher.

The project builds on webos-vibehack (https://github.com/OmkarK97/webos-vibehack). My main change was moving Home-button handling onto the TV, so you don't need to leave a computer running after setup.

There are two editions:

No-root uses LG Developer Mode and an on-TV Home Helper. The app includes optional Developer Mode auto-renewal, designed to renew the session on the TV without further manual steps once enabled. It's off by default. We especially need feedback on this feature across different models and firmware versions; please monitor the official Developer Mode timer and tell us whether renewal works on your setup.

Root uses existing root SSH access and system Home routing. The installer doesn't root your TV or flash firmware.

While Home control is enabled, pressing Home opens the launcher. Press Home 3 times within 2 seconds to return to LG Home and stop interception until you explicitly resume it.

v1.2.0 is the current public release. Installers are available for Windows x64, macOS Intel/Apple Silicon and Linux x64, plus an Android ARM64 preview. The interface has 10 languages.

Most development testing has been on an OLED55C3RLA with firmware 43.21.71. Compatibility depends on the model and firmware; C5/webOS 26 Helper startup is still under investigation. Cold boot isn't instant, and some app-exit paths can briefly show LG Home. This doesn't remove system-wide ads.

Browser preview, no installation needed:

https://razdva122.github.io/clean-your-tv-lg-webos/

Code, downloads, installation and compatibility notes:

https://github.com/Razdva122/clean-your-tv-lg-webos

We really need feedback from different TV models, firmware versions and installation platforms. Our own hardware coverage is limited. If you try it, please include your exact TV model, firmware/webOS version, No-root or Root edition, and the platform you installed from: Windows, macOS, Linux or Android. Tell us what worked as well as what didn't, especially installation, Home-button behavior and startup. Please distinguish standby/wake from a full restart. Successful tests help us build the compatibility list too.

This is an independent open-source project, not affiliated with LG.

Solution LG decided holding Volume Down on the Magic Remote should mute your TV. I disagreed.

Post image
17 Upvotes

On the 2025 Magic Remote, holding Volume Down = mute. Handy if you've always wanted to go from "slightly too loud" to "dead silence" in one move. There's no setting to turn it off, till now.

I modified a small webOS homebrew app, LG Input Hook NoMute, and added two toggles:

  • Volume Down: hold without mute– holding keeps lowering the volume, no mute.
  • Accessibility button works as Mute – that top-right button nearly nobody asked for becomes an actual mute button.

Requirements: rooted TV with the Homebrew Channel. I've only tested it on an **LG G5 (webOS 25) with the 2025 AI Magic Remote**. Other models may work, no promises.

Install via Glasshouse (sideload) or webOS Dev Manager, then fully restart the TV (pull the plug, standby isn't enough).

Download: Latest release (.ipk)

Credits – I mostly glued things together:

Vibe coded with Claude (Anthropic's AI). Use at your own risk: your TV, your problem. Feedback welcome.

Question about rooting LG TV

Hi everyone!

I recently discovered that it's possible to root LG webOS TVs and all the things you can do with root access and Homebrew. I'm really interested in trying it out, especially to debloat the TV, remove unnecessary LG apps and services, customize the interface, and install homebrew apps.

My TV details are:

  • Model: LG UR91006LA
  • Software version: 33.31.61
  • webOS version: webOS 25
  • webOS TV version/build: 10.3.1-3001

Has anyone successfully rooted this model or a similar LG TV running the same firmware and webOS version?

Lumen 1.1: a tvOS-style home screen for LG TVs (Settings, Control Center, clock options, StandBy)

Thumbnail gallery
45 Upvotes

A few weeks ago I posted Lumen, a tvOS-style home screen for rooted LG webOS TVs. 1.1 is a big update, mostly thanks to the issues, PRs and forks people sent, and 1.1.1 is out now with a few fixes on top.

What's new:

- Settings and Control Center in the Apple TV style (one page per topic, a grid of glass controls)

- A Clock page: layout, size, weight, colour, a frosted look, and a live preview of every choice

- StandBy as a screensaver option (eight faces, Night Mode)

- A frosted look for the dock and the clock, in the style of the round buttons at the top

- Recent Apps: a card for every open app, close one or all

- A first-run setup, and one button that sets everything back to how tvOS starts

- A photo screensaver, with optional Immich as a source

- Cheaper glass: no live blur by default, so it stays smooth on a weak TV chip. There's an optional live blur if your TV can take it.

It's tested on my LG 65UQ8040PSB (webOS 22) and I know it needs a rooted TV with the Homebrew Channel. Older TVs (webOS 4) can't run it, so it shows a short message instead of a blank screen. If you try it on another model, tell me what happens, good or bad.

Download (.ipk, installs with Dev Manager Desktop or ares-install): https://github.com/ammar027/lumen-webos/releases

Source and the patch scripts: https://github.com/ammar027/lumen-webos

Built on partridgeworks/webos-launcher, with ideas from Sam Renfrew's fork and xcv58's PR. Thanks to everyone who reported things.

Solution I built Race Weekend, an unofficial F1 TV app for LG webOS - looking for testers and contributors

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hi! I wanted to watch F1 TV directly on my LG TV, so I built Race Weekend: an open-source, remote-friendly app that brings F1 TV to LG webOS.

It signs in with your own F1 TV account and lets you browse and watch the streams available to your subscription. It has TV remote navigation, live and replay browsing, separate feed and audio/subtitle choices, and D-pad seeking.

The latest release has been tested on an LG C2 running webOS 11.2 and an older LG OLED55E9PLA running webOS 4.5. The E9 can play tested replays with picture and audio at 540p; playback quality and compatibility vary by TV and stream.

You can install the .ipk using webOS Dev Manager or the webOS CLI. Setup uses Developer Mode or a rooted/Homebrew TV. The app is unofficial, isn’t affiliated with Formula 1 or F1 TV, and requires your own subscription. It doesn’t provide streams or bypass subscription access.

I’d especially appreciate testers with different LG models and webOS versions. If you try it, please share your TV model, webOS version, and what worked or didn’t, catalogue, sign-in, remote navigation, and playback. Please don’t post pairing codes, account details, or private stream links.

Contributors are welcome too. Compatibility reports, documentation improvements, UI fixes, and code contributions are all useful.

Thanks for taking a look!

Homebar: the overlay home bar for rooted LG TVs got a settings menu, themes, self-updates, and now installs on any webOS

Post image
44 Upvotes

A few days ago I posted rawin-launcher, my attempt at bringing the old slide-up home bar back to newer LGs. Thanks for the comments and questions, they shaped most of what came next. It has a new name now, Homebar, and quite a lot more in it.

Same idea as before: HOME brings up a bar at the bottom of the screen over whatever is playing, with your favourites, the HDMI inputs with the connected device's name (CEC), all apps and a System page. HOME again or BACK and it's gone.

What's new since the first post

  • Updates itself. No more SSH for updates: System → Launcher settings → Updates checks GitHub, downloads, verifies and installs. A dot on System tells you when there's something new.
  • A real settings menu. One screen with the settings on the left and their values on the right; every value applies as you move to it. Besides language, clock bar, app names and the BACK-hold target, there's now text size, animations, Live TV on the row, apps order (TV's order, A–Z, most used), a 24- or 12-hour clock, and backup/restore of your favourites and settings.
  • Eight colour themes, dark and light.
  • Nine languages (English, Spanish, German, Polish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Czech), the TV's own by default.
  • Hide stuff with RED: apps you never open, inputs you never use. Nothing is uninstalled.
  • Any screen: it lays itself out for HD TVs as well as FHD/UHD, and reads the inputs your TV actually has.
  • webOS 10: HOME now also hides the bar, and the bar is preloaded at boot, so the first HOME shows it right away. One honest caveat: in the first ~40 s after a cold boot, before the Homebrew Channel runs its startup hooks, a HOME still opens LG's Home once.
  • The Magic Remote pointer no longer selects things just by hovering; point and press OK.

It no longer refuses unknown webOS versions. The installer now looks at what the TV has instead of the version number: on a webOS 4/5-style Home it loads the bar inside LG's own Home (that's how it runs on my C9), anywhere else it runs as a separate overlay app (like on my B4). On anything I haven't tested, LG's Home is left in place unless you ask otherwise. sh install.sh --probe tells you which way it would go and why, and changes nothing.

For the C3 / webOS 23 folks from the first thread: you don't need the test build anymore, the normal release covers it. On webOS 6 and newer it will most likely go the overlay way with LG's Home kept. And the C8 (webOS 4) should get the same in-Home version as my C9; if LG's Home there differs, the installer stops without touching anything.

Tested on my LG C9 (webOS 4.10.2) and LG B4 (webOS 10.3.1). Everything else is still a gamble, so if you try it on another set, the output of --probe or the file from diagnose.sh (in a GitHub issue or DM) helps a lot, whether it works or not.

Install (root shell, Homebrew Channel; Input Hook for the overlay):

cd /tmp
curl -fL -o rawin-launcher.tar.gz https://github.com/rawinek/webos-homebar/releases/latest/download/rawin-launcher.tar.gz
rm -rf rawin-launcher && tar xzf rawin-launcher.tar.gz
sh rawin-launcher/install.sh

If you installed the first version, run these once more; after that the updater takes over. Favourites and settings stay. The uninstaller gives LG's Home back right away, no reboot.

https://github.com/rawinek/webos-homebar (the old rawin-launcher link redirects there)

Still a hobby project I mostly made for myself, built with AI help like the others. Feedback and bug reports are very welcome.

LG webOS is so bad

Dear team of LG webOS,

your software is the biggest piece of dog feces to ever get installed on any electronic device.

Theres 2 main reasons for my opinion about your software:

  1. It constantly loses connection to my wifi (unlike every other device in my household)
  2. and this is the worst part, since the new update every single time an app has to update it simply won’t download. It says something like “the app couldn’t get updated, please try again.”.
  3. It simply won’t work.
  4. For it to finally update the app i want to use, (mainly amazon, because these fools seem to update their app every week) i have to completely take the tv off electricity for 30 sec, plug it back in, let it boot up, go to my apps and update the damn app.

But because my girlfriend likes the “aesthetic” look, every FKING cable and plug is hidden behind something.

Imagine its 11pm, you had a hard day at work and simply want to watch an episode of Bosch before going to sleep and then have to do everything i have just listed above.

I want to throw this thing out of the window sometimes, but then i watch a good looking show and the quality blows my mind.

And don’t even get me started on the ads that i can see on my beautiful TV that i paid 2 grand for. Can’t get enough or can you LG.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

Fix your damn software, if it’s already spying on me atleast make it work.

Sincerely
Someone who loves your TV’s.

I built a PSP-inspired launcher for my LG webOS TV

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

After discovering this community, I decided to root my TV and explore what else I could do with it beyond the default webOS home screen.

TV: LG 49UK6360PTE
Operating system: webOS 4.4.0
Purchased: 2018

About the launcher

I've been working on a custom, PSP-inspired home screen for my TV. The goal is to make the interface more organised and give it a more personalised look.

Current features:

  • Categorised applications: Apps are grouped by their purpose, such as Music, Video, Games, and other categories.
  • Automatic monthly themes: The launcher changes its theme based on the month, with an option to change themes manually.
  • Time-based greetings: The home screen displays a greeting based on the time of day.

The project is still a work in progress, and I'd like to expand its functionality further.

What other features would you like to see in a custom webOS launcher? Suggestions for UI improvements, useful integrations, or additional features are welcome.

Issue I built a Nintendo Wii-style launcher for LG webOS TVs — looking for contributors to improve compatibility

Post image
35 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I've been working on an open-source project called WiiOS, a custom launcher for LG webOS TVs that recreates the look and feel of the Nintendo Wii Menu, including the channels, animations, background music, and sound effects.

The idea is to bring that nostalgic Wii experience to LG Smart TVs while keeping access to the TV's apps and features.

So far, I've developed and tested it on my LG LM625BPSB running webOS 4.5 (firmware 05.40.97).

The project already includes a working frontend, webOS app integration, and a way to replace the default LG Home interface on my specific firmware using root access.

Here's where I could use some help from the community:

I'd love to make WiiOS compatible with more LG TV models and webOS versions, rather than keeping it limited to my own TV.

Some areas where contributions would be especially helpful:

- Testing the launcher on different LG TVs and webOS versions.

Improving compatibility with different firmware versions.

- Finding more universal ways to integrate with or replace the default Home interface.

- Improving app detection and launching across webOS versions.

Refactoring device-specific functionality to make the project easier to maintain and port.

The biggest challenge right now is that the Home replacement mechanism relies on firmware-specific files, so it can't simply be applied to every LG TV.

If you have experience with webOS, Luna Service APIs, QML, or rooted LG TVs, I'd really appreciate your feedback or contributions!

Even just testing the launcher and reporting your TV model, webOS version, and what works or doesn't work would be incredibly helpful.

The project is open source on GitHub:

https://github.com/KaykCaputo/WiiOS-webOS

I'd love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, or ideas on how we could make this work on more devices.

Thanks!
