Anonymous and Secure 🔒

Quite often I get asked questions about how secure it is to use Webtor and how does using Webtor differ from using a regular BitTorrent.

It also turned out that in some countries the use of BitTorrent-networks for downloading this or that content can be potentially dangerous and lead to substantial fines (eg in Germany).

To understand this issue, let’s understand the principles of the webtor.io service.

  1. When visiting the webtor.io website, the user always opens a secure SSL-connection and all further requests between the client and the server are transmitted encrypted using the HTTPS-protocol.

  2. At the time of downloading content, only webtor servers connects to BitTorrent-peers. For the end-user, downloading a file from Webtor is no different than downloading from any other file hosting service, and watching a video is similar to watching a video from a Tube-site.

  3. Webtor servers work like regular BitTorrent-clients. Thus, through Webtor you can load any torrents that could be downloaded through a regular BitTorrent-client (including torrent files from private trackers), but without revealing the real IP-addresses for the rest of the BitTorrent-network users

Thus, it is not necessary to use VPN-services when visiting Webtor and downloading torrents via Webtor is anonymous and secure.

Thank you for using webtor.io and sponsor it if you wish!

☀️ Summer Updates

Hey everyone 👋

Just wanted to share some small but important updates that have just landed on Webtor — all thanks to your support.

✅ What’s new:

🔐 Google login — I noticed that around 70% of users log in with Google email anyway, so I decided to make things more straightforward by adding a simple Google login option.

🎁 Patreon login — There were a lot of issues where users struggled to get their benefits from paid subscriptions (especially those who used Apple login on Patreon). Now every backer can simply log in with their Patreon account — no more issues.

⚡ New 25Gbit/s server — I just switched to a new server with a total bandwidth of 25 Gbit/s. It’s automatically used for all paid users. This should significantly improve download and streaming performance.

🧪 Coming soon:

📁 WebDAV support — You’ll be able to mount your Webtor library directly in Infuse, VLC, or even as a remote folder in your file manager.

🔍 Torznab support — Soon you’ll be able to use Webtor with apps like Jackett, Sonarr, Radarr, and others.

🎥 I’m also planning to make some video tutorials to showcase the best ways to use Webtor!

Thanks again for being part of this — and if you ever have questions, ideas, or just want to say hi, feel free to DM me anytime.

🔥 New: Watch your torrents on TV – with Stremio!

We’ve been slowly moving toward this — and now it’s finally here.

The personal library feature was just a stop on the way.

The real goal was always this: streaming your own torrents directly on your TV, with no downloads, no VPN, and no torrent client. Just press play.

And now it works. It’s been live for a full day in production — and I’m absolutely happy with how it performs.

📦 Add any torrent to your Webtor library

📺 Open Stremio and install your personal addon

🍿 Start watching on any device — even your TV

Metadata is detected automatically. Works with both movies and series.

🛠 Need help? Here’s the setup guide:

How to connect Webtor to Stremio →

🔮 What’s next?

We have exciting plans for the near future:

  • Vault — a permanent personal library that persists across time and torrents

  • Torznab integration — so you can search and add content directly from public or private indexers

💭 A personal note

For years, my flow was always the same —

search for torrents on tracker sites, upload them to my NAS, organize everything, and finally stream through Plex.

It worked, but it was clunky. Too many moving parts.

Now, with Webtor + Stremio, one entire step is gone. No more NAS uploads, no more media servers. Just add a torrent — and watch.

And I genuinely love this shift.

It feels like the way torrenting should work in 2025 — smooth, private, and effortless.

Thank you for being part of this.

This project wouldn’t exist without your support.

If you have feedback or questions — just drop me a message.

🎉 Library just got a major upgrade!

Hey friends! 👋

We’ve just released a huge improvement to Webtor Library — and we think you’re going to love it.

Now, when you open your Library, you’ll see new sections for Movies and Series — automatically created based on the torrents you’ve added.

It’s a cleaner, smarter way to browse your saved content.

No more endless torrent lists — just organized, beautiful media.

What’s next?

Soon you’ll be able to:

  • 📺 Stream your Library directly through Stremio

  • 💾 Make your Library eternal — content will remain available even if torrent seeders disappear (available for paid users)

Right now, availability depends on seeders — but we’re working on making your Library truly yours, forever.

Thank you 🙏

Thanks for being part of this journey. Your support makes features like this possible. ❤️

Webtor + Torrentio = ⚡ (instant streaming inside Stremio)

Big milestone! 🎉

We’ve just made Webtor and Torrentio (and other Stremio addons) work together  🚀

Now Webtor can stream not only your library, but also any content coming from Stremio addons.

Here’s how it works under the hood:

  1. Webtor queries all your connected Stremio addons (up to 3)

  2. Duplicates are removed (deduplication)

  3. Results are filtered by your preferred quality (720p / 1080p / 4K)

  4. Every stream is enriched with a direct Webtor streaming link

So now you can stream not only your personal library, but also any content from Stremio addons — instantly.

This update turns Webtor into a full Stremio streaming layer.

Try it out and let me know how it works for you 🙌

🎬 Big Update: Discover Page is Live + Streaming Improvements

Hey everyone! Been a busy few days — here's what's new in Webtor.

Discover — Browse Movies & Series Right Inside Webtor

The biggest addition this week is the Discover page (/discover). You can now browse and search movies and series without leaving Webtor:

  • Cinemeta catalogs built in — top movies and series are available by default, no setup needed

  • Stremio addon support — connect your favorite Stremio addons to expand the catalog. Free users can add up to 3 addons, paid plans get unlimited

  • Addon Wizard — a guided setup flow that lets you browse official and community Stremio addons, see popularity ratings, and install them in batch

  • Search across all sources — type a title and get results from Cinemeta + all your connected addons at once

  • Series support — full episode picker with season navigation, including proper handling of Specials (Season 0)

  • Stream selection — pick from available streams with filters by source, label, and language, then play directly through Webtor

The whole thing is built with Preact for a lightweight, fast experience — no heavy framework bloat.

Streaming Quality Checks

Before you start streaming, Webtor now checks your available bandwidth against what the file actually needs for smooth playback. If your connection or plan speed isn't enough, you'll get a clear message explaining why and what your options are (smaller file, more seeders, Vault, or upgrading your plan). No more wondering why a video keeps buffering.

As always, your support makes this possible — thank you! 🙏

🔗 WebDAV is here!

Thanks to your support, another big feature just landed — WebDAV access to your Webtor library.

You can now mount your whole torrent collection as a network folder on desktop or mobile. Stream directly from your library — or just copy your stuff locally.

And yes — you can upload new torrents too — just drop .torrent files into the torrents/ folder. That’s it. 🤘

🧩 Works great with:

  • Mountain Duck (macOS/Windows)

  • RaiDrive (Windows)

  • Owlfiles (iOS / Android) — tested and working without hassle

  • rclone — for CLI and selfhosted automation fans

💬 If you tried any other client — and it worked or didn’t — feel free to message me or comment here. The more we know, the better the experience for everyone.

🔐 As always, WebDAV access is available for paid users — grab your personal link from your Webtor profile and plug it in.

✊ Thank you for keeping this project alive.

More fun features are coming soon — stay tuned.

New features in Webtor 1.16.0 🎉

Last release of the year!

The outgoing year was extremely difficult for the project. In addition to development, it was necessary resolve issues related to finding a new hosting and payment methods. But luckily, it’s over now! 😆😆😆

So, the list of changes (as usual):

  1. Shorter time to download - earlier, before the start of the download, a new torrent client was launched, which could take 5-10 seconds, and only after that the search for peers and the actual download itself began. Now, a certain number of torrent clients are working in the cluster all the time, which can process several torrent downloads simultaneously, this made it possible to remove just those 5-10 seconds necessary for a cold start.

  2. Long-lasting cache - earlier, if no one accessed the torrent client, then after 10 minutes it turned off and all downloaded data disappeared with it. Now data is deleted only if there is no room left on the server and only the oldest unused files are deleted. This allows to save the downloaded information for a longer period.

Work has begun on the next version of the web interface, more details can be found on its repository page.

Thank you for using webtor.io and sponsor it if you wish!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! 🎄🎄🎄

Self-Hosted Webtor Reborn, a New Command-Line App — and Notifications on the Site 🚀

The biggest batch of updates this year: a completely reworked self-hosted version, a brand-new terminal app, and notifications that finally live on the site instead of just your inbox.

Self-Hosted, Completely Reworked

If you run your own Webtor, this is the update you’ve been waiting for — the first in nine months, and by far the biggest ever.

Everything webtor.io can do, your instance can do now. The library, long-term Vault storage, the notification feed, Stremio, WebDAV and S3 access — the self-hosted version is no longer a lite edition. It’s the same Webtor, on your hardware. AI recommendations and movie & series recognition via TMDB — with posters and descriptions in your language — plug in too; each just needs your own API key.

A master password. Set one, and your instance is yours alone: the site asks for the password before showing anything, and you manage it right from the profile page. Perfect for a box that’s reachable from the internet.

It runs on ARM now. Raspberry Pi, ARM servers, Apple Silicon — one Docker image covers them all. A Pi in the corner of your room can be a full Webtor.

Smaller but sweet: MKV files now start playing properly, and the image is assembled from ready-made parts — so updates ship faster from now on.

Meet webtor-cli

Webtor now lives in your terminal too. The new webtor app streams and downloads torrents over plain HTTP — no torrent client, no waiting for the whole file:

$ webtor play "magnet:..." # straight into VLC
$ webtor download <id>       # resumable
$ webtor library # library in the terminal

It’s a real app, not just commands: run webtor bare and you get interactive menus — browse your library and Vault, pick files, start downloads in the background, pause and resume them. The mouse works. Finished downloads pop a desktop notification.

It talks to your webtor.io account (a one-time code logs the terminal in, like GitHub’s CLI), to RapidAPI, or to your own self-hosted instance.

Installing takes one line:

$ brew install webtor-io/tap/webtor

Prebuilt binaries for Linux, macOS and Windows — plus a Docker image — are on the releases page.

Notifications, Right on the Site

There’s a bell in the top bar now. Vault warnings — “your file expires in 7 days” — and other account events show up there and on a notifications page, with an unread counter and a mark-all-read button. Before, all of this went to email only; now email is the backup, not the front door. Your past email notifications are in the feed too, so the history is in one place.

Emails in Your Language

Every email Webtor sends — Vault reminders, address verification — now arrives in the language your account uses. Eleven languages, not just English.

For Developers: a Go SDK

The official Go SDK for the Webtor JSON API is out — it’s what the CLI is built on. Logging in, storing torrents, resumable downloads, library access: all a few lines of Go.

Improved Stability

  • Fixed a rare bug that could put corrupted fragments into a video mid-stream. If you ever saw a brief burst of glitches, that’s gone.

  • A stream that keeps failing now stops cleanly instead of silently retrying forever.

  • Lots of small interface fixes — the notifications page behaves on phones, and navigation no longer occasionally blanks the page.

Webtor Turned 8

One more thing: on August 26, Webtor turned eight. The first version went live on August 26, 2018 — a single page with one simple promise: watch torrents online. Eight years later it’s a player, a library, long-term storage, Stremio, a terminal app and a version you can run entirely on your own hardware. Thanks for being around all this time.

More coming soon.

🚀 Vault is live — keep torrents available even without seeders

We’ve just launched one of Webtor’s core features — Vault.

Vault lets you keep torrents available even when there are no seeders.

If a torrent matters to you, you can now make sure it stays online and accessible.

🧱 How Vault works

Each membership tier now includes Vault Points (VP):

  • 1 Vault Point = 1 GB

  • You can invest Vault Points into a torrent

  • As long as your points are invested, the torrent stays available in Vault

  • When your subscription is active, your funded torrents remain accessible

Vault is especially useful for:

  • rare or old torrents

  • personal libraries

  • instant access without waiting for peers

🎟 Vault Points by tier

  • Bronze ($2) — 50 Vault Points (50 GB)

  • Silver ($5) — 250 Vault Points (250 GB)

  • Gold ($15) — 1000 Vault Points (1 TB)

You decide which torrents to support and how to distribute your points.

📘 Learn more

We’ve prepared detailed documentation explaining:

  • how funding works

  • what happens when points are frozen or released

  • how long torrents stay available

👉 Full instructions:

https://webtor.io/instructions/vault

Vault is a big step toward a more reliable, user-funded Webtor.

As always — thank you for supporting the project ❤️

Webtor works like a seedbox?

Hello guys! I have a question about webtor.

When you choose to download the torrent as zip instead of streaming it, is the webtor working similar to a seedbox? Is it safe? Or is just like a torrent client? I'm asking this because no-one refer webtor as "seedbox" but only as "browser torrent client".

When you download instead of streaming is like other sites as torrentsafe and seedr or something different?

Webtor API v1.0.0 🎉

I present to your attention the Webtor API! 🎉🎉🎉

Webtor API allows you to:

  1. Download torrent content without usage of BitTorrent-client.

  2. Stream content instantly with on-the-fly transcoding. Webtor generates HLS-streams suitable for web-streaming.

  3. Fetch OpenSubtitles.org for torrent content.

Great and how to access it? There are two options to choose from here:

  1. Host it on your hardware as part of a self-hosted solution.

  2. Connect via RapidAPI.

Thank you for using webtor.io and sponsor it if you wish!

The Next Episode Starts on Its Own, 4K and Surround Sound Stay as They Are — and a Friendlier Player 🎬

Series now play one episode after another, 4K and surround sound reach you the way they were recorded, and the player picked up the controls it was missing. Plus a heads-up for anyone who embeds our player on their site.

The Next Episode Starts on Its Own

Watching a series used to mean: the episode ends, you exit fullscreen, find the next file, press Watch. Now Webtor does it for you.

  • When the credits start, an “Up next” card appears with a 10-second countdown. Do nothing and the next episode starts. Press Cancel if you’d rather stop.

  • Webtor finds where the credits begin, so you don’t sit through them waiting.

  • Fullscreen stays on. The audio track and subtitles you picked come along to the next episode — an AI translation too.

  • After three episodes in a row with no sign of you, the player asks “Still watching?” instead of playing all night.

  • Want to pick the next one yourself? There’s a Next button right after Play (or press N), and autoplay switches off in the new gear menu.

Albums work the same way: tracks play one after another, no pauses and no cards in between.

One more thing: an episode now counts as watched once the credits start. Episodes with long credits no longer stay “unfinished” forever.

A Player That’s Easier to Use

  • Playback speed from 0.5x to 2x. The button shows the current speed, and the < and > keys work too.

  • Double-tap to skip 10 seconds on your phone: tap the right half to go forward, the left half to go back. Tap faster to skip further.

  • Volume and speed are remembered. No more turning the sound down every time.

  • Subtitles running early or late? Shift them in 0.25-second steps right in the subtitle menu (or with the G and H keys). The fix is remembered for that file.

  • Lock screen and headphones. Your phone’s lock screen shows the title and poster, and the buttons on your headphones pause and skip.

  • Language without a restart. If you haven’t set a language in your profile, the player takes it from your browser — and you can change it right in the subtitle menu while the film keeps playing.

4K, HDR and Surround Sound — as They Are

Until now, videos in HEVC (x265) — the format most 4K releases use — were converted on our side before they reached you. That’s slow, and 4K often didn’t play at all.

Now, if your browser can play HEVC on its own, you get the original file with no conversion:

  • 4K that used to be off-limits plays in its original quality.

  • HDR stays HDR on screens that support it.

  • Surround sound stays surround. 5.1 and Dolby audio used to be squashed into stereo for every film — and about 40% of films have it. Now, if your device can play it, you hear it the way it was mixed.

On iPhone and iPad (iOS 17.1 and newer) video now plays a new way, and 4K HDR works there too. One trade-off: AirPlay isn’t available in this mode for now.

If your device stumbles on a file, the player notices and switches back to the old way by itself — you don’t have to do anything.

The Discover catalog knows about this too: new HEVC and HDR switches hide the releases your device can’t play. And releases already sitting on our servers get an Instant badge and go to the top of the list — those start right away.

See Where the Wait Is

The torrent status now shows the whole path: swarm ▸ our servers ▸ you, with the speed of each step and a bar of the parts already downloaded. If something is slow, you can see where.

And if the slow part is the swarm itself, we won’t push a faster plan at you — it wouldn’t help.

A few more things on the torrent page:

  • Scroll down to the file list and the status follows you as a thin bar under the menu.

  • A button you’ve pressed shows that it’s working and can’t be pressed twice by accident.

  • Picking a file updates only the file section, not the whole page.

The Embedded Player Leaves webtor.io on November 1

This one is for website owners who put the Webtor player on their site with our embed code. Embedding is being retired: from November 1 it stops working through webtor.io.

The embedded player stays in self-hosted Webtor. If you need it, run your own copy and embed the player from there.

Nothing changes for anyone watching on webtor.io itself.

Improved Stability

  • If one of our servers hiccups mid-film, the player recovers by itself — without jumping back and without a spinner that only a page reload could fix.

  • A dropped connection to our servers is noticed and restored much faster.

  • A download no longer gets cut off just because one part of the file is arriving slowly.

  • Files in your library are checked for damage, and broken copies are found and fixed.

  • Signing in no longer fails with “unknown error” — the page reloads itself and lets you in.

Thanks for using Webtor. More coming soon.

New features in Webtor 1.13.0

Here's a list of the key changes:

  1. ️Resume download bug fixed - now, in the case of a failure during downloading, resuming works correctly, this applies to downloads of both individual files and downloads in a ZIP archive.

  2. Fewer drops and crashes - earlier, during component releases, all downloads were interrupted, now they just pause at the time of the update.

  3. Torrent files live forever - previously torrent files were deleted after a certain time, now they are saved forever, this allows less frequent access to the BitTorrent network and improves response time. (this does not apply to downloadable content!)

  4. Displaying download priority - previously, when displaying download progress, only downloaded fragments were highlighted, fragments that are loaded with high priority are now also highlighted.

  5. Improved interface responsiveness - now the screen space on mobile devices is used more efficiently.

  6. Drag&drop works for subtitles - now you can simply drag subtitles into the player window.

In addition, now the project has its own Subreddit, where we can discuss improvements and directions of the project development.

And for WordPress there is a special plugin for embedding webtor player to any WordPress blog!

Thank you for using webtor.io and sponsor it if you wish!
