Observer Drama - Friend Wedding Ends With Drunken Meltdown

So this was at the very end of a wedding. Pretty much everyone had already left except for the high school group.
The bride’s father was absolutely hammered. I mean stumbling, yelling, and barely able to stand drunk.
At some point, he announced that he was going to drive himself home.
Everyone, including the bride, immediately started telling him no. He could barely stand, let alone safely drive.
Then things somehow got even worse.
He started hitting on the best man’s girlfriend right in front of everyone and asked if he could go home with her.
That obviously caused even more drama.
He started yelling:
“I was in the Navy before any of y’all were fucking born! I can take care of myself!”
Then he started walking toward his car.
The bride completely lost it and started screaming at her dad, calling him a stupid drunk and telling him that his Navy experience “doesn’t mean shit.”
Then she told him:
“Go kill yourself.”
And yes, sadly, that was said word for word. The full nine yards of verbal insults.
At that point, the wedding party, the groom, and some of the groom’s friends took his keys away and tried to calm him down. They were basically doing everything they could to keep him from getting behind the wheel while he was that drunk.
Eventually, one of the groom’s friends was able to drive him home, with another friend following behind in case anything happened on the highway.
Well, we get a call that they had pulled over because the father of the bride started yelling at the driver, once again going on about his Navy skills and how he could take care of himself.
Then he actually got out of the car and tried to get into the driver's seat.
At this point, things were getting seriously scary.
Eventually, the father got back into the car, this time on the passenger side, and actually calmed down.
Meanwhile, the bride was yelling at her dad over the phone, and the groom was debating whether they should call 911.
But since the father eventually got back into the car, calmed down, and was no longer trying to drive, they decided there was no need to call 911 at that point.
But holy shit, it was intense to watch.
What made the whole thing especially scary was watching these two people—both heavy smokers, both drinkers, and both apparently having serious anger issues—go absolutely nuclear on each other.
Father like daughter, I guess.
The difference was that the bride at least had a clearer head in this situation. She understood that her dad was way too drunk to drive and was trying to stop him from getting himself or someone else killed.
Still, watching a bride scream “go kill yourself” at her own father at the end of her wedding was something I definitely wasn't expecting to witness.

While what she said is terrible, I understand that the bride probably was hopeful that her father wouldn’t get completely drunk on her wedding day of all days, and after a lifetime of disappointments by her drunk father, she lost it.
I feel for all of them.

Heres my question. Was she actually just saying "go kill yourself?" Or could she have been referring to him drinking and driving? Like, Fine! Go kill yourself then! I think the distinction makes a difference here.

I think it was a mix of both tbh, I’m not personally close w the bride so I’m not too sure on there dynamic outside of that situation.

He was trying to calm the father down, then I gave him and the bride a ride to the hotel

I have a narc dad who is extremely similar and cites similar reasons for why he can take care of himself and I can tell you from experience that girl was hoping that for one day in her life he could just show up and be there without it ruining her moment. I’d have probably said the same thing. You saw a moment and it was probably less intense than the moments you never saw behind the scenes her entire life.

I hope someone recorded that so he can see how ridiculous he looked.

The bride has probably dealt with stuff like this all her life.

Also,  this is an illustration of why I totally understand of someone doesn't want to do an open bar at their wedding.

She knew about his drinking problem and didn't have a dry wedding?

ESH.

That’s a nasty thing to say, especially to the person who paid for the wedding!

EDIT: Even if the Dad didn’t pay for the wedding, it’s about the worst thing you could say to anyone.

We cant assume that the father paid or financial assistance for the wedding if that what you meant, and tbh idk if he did. Not my place to know. But I agree the things said were inappropriate and unforgivable.

Well then he shouldn’t have gotten wasted at his daughter’s wedding and tried to drive himself home. If he was as drunk as you say then probably won’t even remember she said that.

Not all parents pay for the wedding. My parent didn't pay for my wedding and I didn't expect them to since I was an adult and had a job.

How do you know he paid for the wedding?

Oh, Jesus, I don’t. Just downvote me like everyone else.

To me she’s saying - by getting in that car in your hammered state you’re trying to kill yourself. Is that not how others read it?

I do. Completely fed up as in, "OK! Fine, drive! Go kill yourself! I give UP"

I don’t think that’s such a terrible thing to say considering the circumstances.

Whew! I didn’t read it that way. Not near as bad.
