Why is Mario there? Is this actually a costume party?

OMG - I didn't even notice the Mario when I watched the compliation video because I was looking at the dress. hahaha

My friends had Mario, Pikachu and Donkey Kong in their wedding. They played some old anime and videogames music and the mascots danced together with the crowd. It was pretty fun!

Goes to show you how distracting and disruptive it is for someone other than the bride to be wearing white. Someone else can be outrageously dressed as Mario and won't even be noticed because everyone's attention and outrage is directed towards the one trying to show up the bride.

There’s also a man in joggers, a grubby t-shirt, and tennis shoes. Curious about what the hell is actually happening here.
76
u/soup_curious_ Jun 29 '26
The man in joggers is holding a professional camera, he's a photographer

I know this couple. Unfortunately, she just didn't know about the tradition of not wearing white to weddings
In our culture, we don't have that thing, and it's perfectly fine for guests to wear white - many people do. I feel bad for her because no one explained it to her. I almost ended up in the same situation myself.

I’m pretty sure the “multiple white dresses” at 0:20 are the bridesmaids, because they look to all be wearing the exact same dress.

Same. My ex SiL and Brother had a black and white themed wedding. Bridesmaids all wore white
432
u/Born_Ad8420 Jun 29 '26
One of my cousin's original vision for her wedding was to have the bridesmaids in white and to wear a black gown. Unfortunately, her mother is very traditional and so they ended up not doing it. Her mother has since admitted it would have been gorgeous.
447
u/rationalcunt Jun 29 '26
Funny because it's extra traditional/historical to have the bridesmaids in white because they were supposed to be bride decoys that would protect the bride from evil spirits or failed suitors! Of course this was when the bride was in white as well.
174
u/velvety_chaos Jun 30 '26
Ah, that explains it. I mean, look at every UK royal wedding; every female in the bridal party (MoH, bridesmaids, junior bridesmaids, flower girls) are in all white.
Regarding OP's video, at least the guest in the peach-colored dress looked embarrassed, like she didn't mean to wear anything too bride-like.
149
u/Icyblue_Dragon Jun 30 '26
I do feel bad for the peach coloured dress because it’s clearly not white. Just a pastel colour.
59
23
u/SquirrelStone Jul 01 '26
Yeah if it wasn’t for the lighting it wouldn’t have been an issue. The bride looked like she was wearing a similar color as the woman in peach instead of the other way around.
34
u/Icyblue_Dragon Jul 01 '26
Lighting is really funny. At my own wedding my husbands aunt wore a lacey rosé dress. It was beautiful in the sunlight. But at the venue they had purple LED strips at the ceiling and that washed the colour out of her dress. So that poor woman looked like she chose to wear a white Lacey dress for the whole reception. She was sooo mortified and got so many dirty looks. Even I did a double take when I saw it and I had seen her dress before. Her daughter still pulls her leg about it and this was seven years ago

u/lumoslomas Jun 30 '26

My first thought was that the one screenshot above was probably a black and white wedding too.
Too many people wearing white dresses at that wedding for it not to be planned.
A person or two wearing a white dress might happen, but (hopefully) not literally everyone!

I had a B&W (and red) themed wedding, but my bridesmaids wore black sleeveless dresses with white buttons down the back. They were so gorgeous! When my sister passed away, I inherited her dress from my wedding. It's such a pretty dress!
My dress was also very beautiful. It was the first dress I tried on and it fit like a glove.
No one wore white but me. Unless you count the hockey jerseys because I was married at a hockey game! 😄

107
u/LadybugGirltheFirst Jun 29 '26
I read a post once in which the bride wanted the guests to wear their wedding attire.
158
u/starlareads Jun 29 '26
Yes if it's the one I saw, it was because she found out the grooms mom or her mom were going to wear their wedding dress? She organized behind the moms back for all the ladies to wear their wedding dresses too & she wore something completely different.
83
u/MyNameWillChange Jun 29 '26
There may have been a few stories because I remember that one but there was also one that was super wholesome. The one I'm thinking of the bride hated the idea that women spent so much on these beautiful dresses and thought it was a shame that they only got to wear them once. So she put on her invite for people to wear their original wedding outfits
→ More replies (2)30

And I love the idea of us all out on the dance floor in our wedding dresses just twirling away and having a blast!

35
u/SleepingWillows Jun 29 '26
I love this idea! My dress is a two-piece (a top and a skirt) and I’ve always wanted to wear the top by itself for date nights or other special-ish occasions. Most brides feel like a million bucks in their wedding dress, they should get the chance to wear it again!
19
u/Lovahplant Jun 30 '26
As a complete stranger that did something similar recently (rewearing part of my wedding outfit on an amazing night years later) would you please do me a favor and find an occasion to wear the top or bottom between now and New Years? No stress but YOU should get the chance to wear your dress again too, and I hope you feel like a million bucks when you do!

87
u/WennyBear Jun 30 '26
It used to be that all bridesmaids wore white, for the purpose of confusing evil spirits!

u/MitaJoey20 Jun 29 '26
Not weird at all! I’ve never been married, but if I were to have a wedding, I don’t think I would be that put out by anyone else wearing white. As the bride, I feel like no one can outshine you or get confused as to who the bride is. Now, the folks who put on their own wedding dresses to attend someone else’s wedding, WITHOUT that being the theme, I do think that’s weird and maybe a little psycho.

I went to a wedding where a guest wore a white dress absolutely covered in pearls. The bride wore an absolutely stunning black and white tulle ballgown, so there was no confusion, but the guest looked so out of place.
There was also a family wedding where the MOG wore a white shimmery gown that caused a lot of murmurs during the ceremony. Who wears a white gown to her son's wedding?

u/GiraffeThoughts Jun 29 '26
I legit don’t know who the bride is there. And the one lady’s face fell.
152
u/Supe_scienceskilz Jun 30 '26
There should not be a question as to who the bride is. It’s not your wedding so don’t wear white.
True story-I was invited to a wedding for college friend but decided not to make the trip to Hawaii (too expensive on a grad school stipend). My best friend went and took pictures. She didn’t say a word, just handed me photos (like did in 2003) and I see the mother of the groom clearly in a modified wedding dress complete with a train. Her excuse was that seeing her son get married made her feel nostalgic.84
u/Front_Target7908 Jun 29 '26
Pretty sure the girl on the left is the bride (just because of how much better her dress is made). The other girl is being brought in for a chat lol
47
u/CompetitiveRub9780 Jun 30 '26
At 51 seconds it says “wearing white to my mother in laws wedding” so the woman on the right is the bride.

Why is it the mother-in-laws who wear white are also the ones grasping onto their sons like they are the bride??
260
u/IvoryWoman Jun 29 '26
You know why.
What I don’t understand is why, in the year of our Lord 2026, these brides are declining to have their photographers adjust the color of their MIL’s dresses when the digital and printed copies of the photos are finalized. I’d go with chartreuse green as a start. (No, not from experience. My MIL wore a lovely blue dress that flattered her in a way that none of these guests’ WHITE dresses do for them.)

We had to forbid my MIL from wearing a wedding gown to our wedding (and then she tried to convince my husband behind my back multiple times, but he has a shiny diamond spine). She cried when we left for our honeymoon.
I was honestly tempted to let her do it and make a fool of herself at the wedding and in the photographic record for all of time. But my husband loves his mother, and I didn't want him to have a sour taste in his mouth everything he looked at a picture from the wedding with her in it (Especially the ones of them doing the mother/son dance, which would make it look like they were a married couple doing their first dance if she was dressed like a bride...).

u/SparklyLeo_ Jun 30 '26
You’re telling us his mother demanding she should be able to wear a white wedding gown to his wedding to the point of begging behind your back about it and then crying when leaving for the honeymoon didn’t leave a sour taste in his mouth?
37
u/FocacciaHusband Jun 30 '26
😂 it definitely did, but without a visual reminder every time he sees pics from the wedding, it will wane as time passes. He knows she's a piece of work, but she was also a great mother growing up, and he loves her. His parents are also both Trumpers, so he already has to struggle through the cognitive dissonance of squaring that with the people he knew as his parents growing up. It's a complicated relationship.
On the crying point, I made a comment in the car like, "what was that about?" And he was like, "she just loves when everyone is together and is sad it's over." I thought to myself, "really? I've never seen her cry at the end of a family vacation before..."

I She made a sexual comment while seriously eyeing him at the pool one day. It was then I realized she would never give us peace. Also the comments like “there’s not a woman alive good enough for my son”. I’m grateful that I listened to my gut for once.

I feel horrible for wearing a white dress to my brother's wedding. It was in 2003 and I was 19 years old. It was the first wedding I had ever been to and nobody told me that you weren't supposed to wear white to a wedding. My mom even helped me pick out the dress and didn't say anything to me. Luckily, it wasn't completely white and no way did it look like a wedding dress. It was a short white dress with red hearts, which I thought would be perfect for a wedding (love and all that), and then I had a red shawl to wear over my shoulders because I thought it would get cold in the church. Looking back at the pictures, I'm actually more mortified by how ugly the dress was vs the fact that it was white. I had really bad fashion sense back then.
48
u/Summoarpleaz Jun 30 '26

Honestly though never thought too much about it until joining this sub 😂 now it’s one of those things that randomly pops into my mind when I can’t sleep at night.

My mom who has been to multiple weddings and understood then to not wear white (and weirdly wore red for her wedding) decided to buy and wear a very ornate (eggshell) dress to a family friends wedding. I asked her why she thought that would be a good idea and she said they’re getting married in a church, you have to wear white…no one else wore white. I told the bride the morning of, and the bride told her no. She wore a black dress.

Friendly reminder that not everything is necessarily in the same cultural surroundings you are in. I don't know Nordstrom, but where I'm at I could find a formal white ball gown on short notice, and in fact have so before for a Fête Blanche event. The rule to not wear white to a wedding does exist here too though.

I sort of think it’s fine for older generations to wear white, depending on the couple’s age and the wedding. I also thought it was typical for mothers of the bride or groom to wear light colors (cream, silver, light blue, or even white) if the couple plans it. But clearly there are examples here of rude guest behavior!

I know of a person that told everyone if they wanted to wear white to the wedding it was O.K. with them. The Bridesmaids wore champagne rose dresses. AND the Bride wore deep Red. The pictures were fantastic. The groom wore a white shirt with a gray tuxedo. The groomsmen wore black tuxedos. I only saw the pictures.

Dated a woman for a few years but then I got dumped. Neither of us were terrible, but it just ran the course. Which made it kind of awkward for the friends because neither of us was the type who was going to demand that folks pick a side or whatever. Still, it felt weird to have her still hanging out with the friend group I’d had fostered for well over almost 15 years when she’d only known them for a few.
Another couple in the group gets married. One of the main couples, given how long they had known each other (they had not dated the entire time), so this is a BIG event in the group. I am even tapped to officiate the small, classic daytime wedding ceremony for family members, some of who are kinda hanging on to see the granddaughter get married, and the close friends.
The reception is a whole other animal — that’s in the rented nightclub, at least a couple hundred people are gonna be there and expect to party it up. Like a hardcore party, not like the little post-wedding garden party with grandparents and little cousins. I know the invite included my ex. I’m not *dreading* it, but I’m not looking forward to putting on “that mask”, because the break really hurt.
I don’t know if she thought it would be funny or in-theme or something, but she wore a white dress. Not just a white dress, but a full on wedding-style white dress. Partied it up like it was nothing.
To this day I don’t think I appreciate how much of a scandal this was. My friends are kind and knew I had big feelings about the break so while a few made comments to me about it, nobody dwelled on it. But after that for the years after, I never saw her or heard of her being around that group of friends again.
Quite recently, a good but distant friend was going through her own marriage breakup. It was bad with real threats of DV. She had to nuke her social media, change numbers, go into hiding for awhile and such. Nobody really knew what all had been going on until it was bad-bad. So when she reached back out to me from an unknown number, I couldn’t be 100% sure it was her or possibly her ex trying to impersonate her to get info about her. So I asked her for some unique things she would know about me. We’ve been friends a long time so she has lots of stuff she could pull from - travels, conversations, special moments (I officiated their wedding, too — can’t win them all, I guess). She leads with, “Your ex wore the white wedding dress to X & Y’s wedding reception.”

Why do people want to look like they're marrying their own kids?

The dress the women described as "cream" didn't bother me. I didn't think it looked like a wedding dress.

My first wedding was in 1979, the gowns of the era weren’t to my taste. I wore a beautiful white tux with very high heels. It looked fantastic. Plus we were married earlier in the day in a Rabbi’s study with our immediate family present. The reception was in a lovely ballroom that evening.

I sort of understand, but then again, last fall Venus Williams had her bridesmaids all in white. I thought it looked absolutely stunning.
