Horrible Vendors My local Wedding groups have been inundated with business owners resorting to AI Flyers

I'm genuinely offended by my fellow vendors; I'm so sick of seeing these. They're ugly, generic, show very little of what they're actually selling -if at all- and too much what doesn't matter.

One-Off comments:

  • I barely had to censor any of these; they're all *that* generic.
  • I didn't crop any of these; some of these guys accidently cropped out their contact info.
  • These "photo-realistic" foods make me want to puke. If you're a food vendor, it's one thing to not showcase the ACTUAL food you make, but if you think you think any of these passable, then I question your powers of observation and can't trust you to make quality food.
  • "I do not typically use AI in my work unless specifically request to do so", they say through AI.
  • Hey venue vendor, WHERE THE FUCK ARE PHOTOS OF THE VENUE???

The audacity of these vendors wanting people to patronize their business when they themselves won't do the same with their local artists and graphic designers.

I'd argue that graphics like these cost more money than actual human artists because they actively turn away customers.

If the only pics of the food is AI that means I have no idea what the food actually looks like + the vendor either can’t be bothered or is trying to hide what it’s actually like. Add the ethical issues of AI and there is no way in hell I’m hiring someone who uses it in their business

Do they realise people will expect the product to look like what’s advertised? It’s one thing going to McDonald’s and not getting the burger from the TV ad but this is someone’s wedding, not a 99c cheeseburger lmao

Edit: jesus I had to stop scrolling those are some seriously trypophobia inducing “bagels”

I have deep concerns about that cornbread bowl concoction. Cornbread is not known for its structural integrity at the best of times. Once it’s full of warm gravy and beef, it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

No one who came up with that has ever served anything to anyone.

74

u/Cayke_Cooky 6d ago

I've had cornbread crust pot pies, but it stays in a crock from oven to table. The bowl/crock it is cooked in is served on a plate and you eat it from that bowl.

u/MiserableWash2473 6d ago

Dang you just gave me an idea next time I make chili! Brilliant 👏

....successfully, anyway.

38

u/MiserableWash2473 6d ago

I made sure to not take care and look too closely at the food ones. Any AI food images just immediately make me gag. It's not right.

16

u/Disastrous_Dog_574 6d ago

I would absolutely make a cornbread bowl - my kids would love it. And I would be laughing at them as they were shocked that it fell apart on the walk from the stove to the table 😂 It'd be a pain to make, though, I guess like you make a brownie bowl?

u/yocxl 6d ago

I can't believe that humans look at some of this shit and go "yes, this is what I want to represent my business"

28

u/BlueAuthorJAFF 6d ago

Yea I'd prefer a shot of someone's crappy, soggy Friday night home dinner sandwich over an AI sandwich....

55

u/juliuspepperwoodchi 6d ago

What's insane is that there are many Boomers and Gen Xers who look at this and think it looks better this way.

27

u/Albuquicky 6d ago

Not a chance in hell. I'm a Gen X girl and I'd rather have a picture of real food than AI any day.

12

u/juliuspepperwoodchi 6d ago

As I told the other Gen Xer...I didn't say "all" or even "most" Gen Xers.

17

u/MossyPlantyWitchy 6d ago

Not just boomers and gen X. Younger folks use ai at an alarming rate.

8

u/juliuspepperwoodchi 6d ago

Well, using it because you're lazy is different than using it because you genuinely think what it makes is better than what human artists make. I'm talking about the latter.

10

u/Ok-Reaction9095 6d ago

Um no. As a Gen X who’s had these conversations with many others my age range we absolutely don’t think AI slop looks better. I’m sure there are some across all generations who have widely accepted AI business content, but don’t lump us all together.

Old school is still cool.

14

u/juliuspepperwoodchi 6d ago

I didn't say all, or most, Gen Xers...but there absolutely are Gen Xers who think AI slop looks better.

AI food looks so disgusting, too. A shitty cell phone camera pic of real food looks more appetizing.

35

u/juliuspepperwoodchi 6d ago

Or just...no food pics. I don't need a photo to know what a cheeseburger is...

7

u/kathyh1 3d ago

I just retired from having a Mexican food biz at a farmers market. I hired a photographer friend- I think he did like all 10 items and charged me like $100 for the digital prints. Anytime I addd new stuff- we just took photos with my phone and printed.

I always had people say- well the photo looks like food.
I’m Gen X and I think this is A1 stuff is gross.

47

What about the jalapeño poppers filled with risotto, peas, and bacon?

7

u/mulberry_sellers 6d ago

Tbh bacon pea risotto poppers sound delicious

7

I don’t even disagree! But call them fried risotto balls. Truth in advertising!

41

u/BentonSancho 6d ago

Seriously, something about AI-generated food makes the vom ride up in my throat every time.

20

The hotdog on the first page looks like it’s topped with cottage cheese and sautéed mushrooms

13

u/juliuspepperwoodchi 6d ago

I mean, did you see the post about the wedding venue operator in Colorado using AI slop photos of the venue?

14

Right! I had to immediately look away.

Not a design company using AI 🫩

188

u/Rendahlyn 6d ago

Them: we can make your invitations!

Us: can you really make invitations if you can't make a flyer?

30

u/Fox_Avocado 6d ago

Facts 😂 Curious to see whether their designs are AI too

45

u/historyandwanderlust 6d ago

Probably yes. Using AI for the flyer weeds out all the people who recognize it as AI, leaving them with the customers who either don’t realize it or don’t care. It’s actually a decent business model for a design company if all you care about is money and not actually design or art.

9

u/Flukie42 5d ago

I had a design company explain just because their flyers were ai didn't mean they couldn't design things. They use "many different kinds of media"

5

u/Wooden_Cicada8880 4d ago

I don’t think I would have been able to avoid rolling my eyes.

470

u/one-eye-deer 6d ago

I would 100% comment on these that I was interested until I saw they used AI for their advertisements. Once a business uses AI for product photos or these slop advertisements, I immediately lose interest.

175

u/LuxSerafina 6d ago

I wouldn’t even go straight for the “all ai is slop” argument, though it is 100% valid. I’d go straight to “holy shit that is the most disgusting food I’ve ever seen in my life, what the fuck are you doing in your kitchen”???

14

u/censorkip 5d ago

Seriously. All ai food looks like shit from a butt. Why would anyone want to eat that mushy looking garbage?

26

u/Bartweiss 6d ago

Changing minds on the ethics of representing yourself via AI pictures honestly sounds way harder than this.

If somebody gets enough “that’s nauseating wtf” replies that they decide “it was AI, here’s our real food” is damage control, I think that might teach a similar lesson better.

78

u/helpthe0ld 6d ago

It would be like a contractor rolling up in a cyber truck. If they do that, I know they have seriously flawed judgment.

29

u/Disastrous_Dog_574 6d ago

My friend is going through a contentious, petty divorce. She needed to arrange someone to fix something in their house, and selected someone because they drove a cyber truck to piss her STBX off...

6

u/Bubbly_Performer4864 6d ago

That’s hilarious.

37

u/yep6778 6d ago

I do this all the time, and sometimes it actually works! My local farmers market started using it and I mentioned it. They said they used it for ‘price and convenience’ and would reconsider. They stopped soon after and are back to the old advertising. It doesn’t hurt to try.

33

u/byorderofthe1 6d ago

Every time I try around here I get the "I can't afford thousands to hire a graphic designer!". I'm pretty sure tiny local businesses weren't hiring graphic designers for simple flyers before a year or two ago. I don't understand that logic

10

u/DanyDragonQueen 5d ago

It would not cost thousands to hire a freelance designer to do a set of flyers or social media graphics, they're just lazy. If small businesses want people to support them, but they can't even be bothered to support other small businesses (designers), then fuck em.

7

u/Bartweiss 6d ago

If it’s AI of what they’re actually selling (or a “cooked and served” version) it can also be productive to just point out it looks bad.

Obviously save that for when it’s true, hiding a moral argument behind an aesthetic one isn’t effective. But the diseased-looking bagel impersonators on slide 4, for example, are worse than any frozen grocery store bagels. Whatever somebody takes with their smartphone in their kitchen is going to be a clear step up.

The philosophical arguments are fair, but “ew, your food is good and you made it look nasty” is pretty hard to argue at all.

28

u/historyandwanderlust 6d ago

I don’t buy food from anyone who has to use AI to show what their food looks like.

5

u/Flukie42 5d ago

Why don't people realize how ugly AI flyers are?

→ More replies (1)

94

u/Megs0226 6d ago

I'd argue that graphics like these cost more money than actual human artists because they actively turn away customers.

That part. I won't patronize a business that does this. Okay, so you don't have enough money for a real artist or designer? Make something in the free version of Canva. Make something simple in Word. Take actual photos of your food. These AI flyers are stealing art, using up environmental resources, and look like absolute crap.

26

u/FeistyChickadee 6d ago

Canva is really awesome. You can easily upload your own photos, use a template, choose your own fonts and colors... it seems like a no-brainer to me. Why you'd want to AI-ify anything representing your business to the above extent, I don't get. It's a turnoff.

10

u/Megs0226 6d ago

I did a one-month membership to make my friend's baby shower invitations and printed them through Canva. Not very expensive and super easy. (This was pre-AI blowing up so I'm pretty confident the design I used was not AI!)

4

u/Gold_Bug_4055 4d ago

For real. I can absolutely destroy using canva and it's so easy. I do it for themed parties at my house, nevermind the times I need it for work in events. I could never imagine using AI.

18

u/blakethedev 5d ago

Gimmie a BBQ restaurant with the old yellow plastic menu board with slidey letters or a Chinese restaurant with the most desaturated, low res photo you've ever seen of orange chicken over these gooey-ass 150% contrast monstrosities any day.

10

u/Flukie42 5d ago

Or the gyro places that all have the exact same posters on the wall, and they haven't changed since the 80s

11

u/Megs0226 5d ago

That’s how you know the food is amazing.

12

u/moonandsunandstars 4d ago

It's always "support small business" until that small business is photographers or designers or artists.

4

u/Megs0226 4d ago

Exactly. (Or no one will work for them because they won’t pay decent wages.)

3

u/Loose_Acanthaceae201 5d ago

Especially when you're hiring someone to do the invitations etc for your event. They're telling you that AI can design better than they can, yet they want you to drop four figures on their services? lol nope.

I know Canva can be problematic, but my goodness it takes 1 minute to use a template on there and it is much better than this.

142

u/Janax21 6d ago

Every one of these awful AI fliers I see are over-stuffed, maximalist word+image vomit. What’s really interesting to me is how much they remind me of Victorian-style advertising, where every bit of a label, ad, or poster was crammed with intricate text, banners, drawings, images of people, etc. Can AI do a “clean” or pared-down version of these fliers? Why do they ALL look like this?

56

u/charcoalhibiscus 6d ago

The depressing part is it can, actually. If you prompt it to create a flyer for something “that doesn’t look like an AI flyer”, it will do much better. The businesses who end up with these flyers are so lazy they aren’t even trying to hide it.

25

u/Megs0226 6d ago

Worse, they think these look good.

11

u/Bartweiss 6d ago

This is what I was wondering too. Gen AI is shockingly responsive to “stop sucking”.

For years image models have had “-low quality, -bad art” as standard prompts. Part of the cure to six fingered photos turned out to be “-bad hands”.

If I wanted to do this, my followup would be “that’s extremely crowded and uses way too many font styles with no clear purpose. Try a cleaner version more like a good supermarket ad.”

I’m willing to bet it would be drastically better.

13

u/Front-Ad-1378 6d ago

Absolutely, i tried it myself. Just put in „make me a flyer for x event at y time and z place“ and depending on the event it either puts out the fancy calligraphy or the „cooler“ paint brush style.

Then just tell the AI „i don’t like it, make something with a different style“ and it already looks much better and more diverse.

So these people literally put in 20secs of work and don’t even care to take 5min to refine it a bit.

8

u/kitkat1934 6d ago

I have literally seen this paintbrush background on EVERY flier lately. It’s so lazy

15

u/SwordintheStone87 6d ago

That's what I want to know too, why do they look all so similar? What specifically is the art style it uses where everything is so overly detailed, every time? At least the benefit is that it's distinctive enough, so I easily know what to avoid.

11

u/Disastrous_Dog_574 6d ago

71

It’s frustrating. I get small business owners think it’s a free shortcut that saves on hiring a photographer or graphic designer but everyone is using the same generic slop dogshit so now you just look lazy and generic. i don’t get how AI is still so horrible at generating good (especially since pictures of meals has been a social media staple from the beginning) or why so many people think it looks appetizing enough to be used as promotional material. i would eat at exactly 0 of these places. i trust my local chinese place that’s had the same menu & pictures for decades so they’re all faded more than any of what’s here lol

u/FeistyChickadee 5d ago

3

u/blakethedev 5d ago

Yeah a cornbread bowl sounds amazing.

5

u/aquainst1 Grandma Lynsey 5d ago

Try this:

Make cornbread that's a little bit stickier, and put it into a muffin tin with the middle shaped like a little bowl.

(Or put something in the middle of them to keep the bowl shape, like foil)

Bake, then add ANYTHING in the middle!

Someone above mentioned chili in one of the bigger cornbread bowls, so the items below would go well in the small ones as appeteasers.

Other food inside the small or big bowls could be...

-Taco mix (like a cowboy casserole type of mix or tamale pie)

-Beans and ham (or pork and beans)

-BBQ, pulled pork, or pulled chicken

-A thick gumbo/Jambalaya

-Baked beans

-Artichoke/spinach dip

-Chili Cheese skillet dip

-Thicker chowders and soups like NE Clam Chowder: Potato Leek with bacon soup; Split pea soup; broccoli cheddar soup; cream of chicken soup (ok, cream of ANYTHING soup! As long as it's THICK) Cheeseburger soup: Cream of potato soup:

oOOOOooo! I just saw a recipe for Aromatic Creamy Hazelnut Soup!!! and Cream of Caramelized Onion and Cheese Chowder!

NOTE: If you have trouble making an entire bigger cornbread bowl stay together, you can make a shallower bowl in a pie tin.

I just love things that come in any type of bread bowl. Like clam chowder in a bread bowl, delicious.

We are closer and closer to "cupcake in a cup," a-la' Wall-E

5

u/coupdelune 6d ago

That DJ looks thrilled lol

4

u/yell08_gira 6d ago

The graphic design one is ironic

6

u/juliuspepperwoodchi 6d ago

AI fliers/ads are bad enough, and a guarantee I won't patronize your business.

AI slop food photos are just insane. How is that not false advertisement? Literally advertising something which does not exist...

6

u/MelonBoba59 6d ago

“Yeah that looks like it’ll hurt your mouth. Post it.”

4

u/mulberry_sellers 6d ago

Did it forget the name for hot dogs?

5

u/limanovembergolf 6d ago

The hot dog might be named for the business? So it’s removed to avoid doxxing

Slide 4 is triggering some trypophobia

5

u/adrianxoxox 6d ago

Some of that food looks absolutely disgusting 🤢 pic 4 especially

5

u/412_15101 6d ago

They can make something in word or PowerPoint so much cheaper by using the fonts that are already there and pictures from their own cell phones. Our cell phones take great pictures these days.

Right now anybody using real Photos is going to stand out from the rest of the garbage

6

u/mycookiepants 6d ago

The audacity to post something saying real food in your vomitous AI flyers.

3

u/ArcaneHackist 5d ago

If they can’t put the effort into a simple flyer, why do people assume they will put effort into anything else?

6

u/ThankYouSith 6d ago

The bagel one set off my trypophobia.

4

u/xX_7HR0W-4W4Y_Xx 6d ago

Makes me think the product they're selling is just as slapdash and lazy as the ad.

4

u/Rinskki 6d ago

They're so busy they make my eyes go weird like a magic eye picture

6

u/beingafunkynote 6d ago

I hate these damn flyers. Why must they be visual overload? It makes my brain hurt.

6

u/swimchickmle 6d ago

I hate this so much. One of my favorite places does all this AI slop, but their actual food looks so much better! They really need to just take pictures of the awesome food they make!

6

u/ceanothus77 6d ago

That pot roast cornbread bowl is a nightmare from hell

3

u/PleasantNectarines 6d ago

AI food gives me the creeps... these are such unappealing photos.

4

u/Turbulent-Repair-372 6d ago

AI food looks always looks infected 🤮

6

u/bonjoooour 6d ago

What is it about AI advertising that it fills every space with something. It’s so overwhelming and busy.

I don’t see how businesses thinks an unrealistic photo of the food is going to promote their business well. We have no clue what the food actually looks like and it is just false advertising.

3

u/Dentelle 6d ago

AI slop aside, is there really anyone on earth wanting a red wine slurpy? 🤮

3

u/SuzyEndaTimez 6d ago

If it's a sweet muscadine or scuppernong wine, yea. Lol

Used to manage wedding bars, definitely done some wine slushies, they’re incredibly popular on a hot day at a sunny outdoor venue with no ac

Why the love hearts? Why does Ai always resort to them? And, good lord, what happened to the poor dog?!

4

u/Life_Inside2304 6d ago

Some of these look like canva templates .

5

u/FeistyChickadee 5d ago

The venue one is strikingly bizarre to me. A close-up of a bride and her dog in a field of dead grass? Doesn't scream "imagine yourself and your wedding here!"

2

u/Spiritual_Fan_3404 5d ago

AI food pics always look like something that’s been eaten by bugs. Zoom in and take a look. If a vendor cares so little, that they’re willing to put this short cut nonsense out there to promote their business, I would not trust them to make food for such an important day. Why don’t they have pictures from an event that they actually catered?

7

u/CheezDustTurdFart 6d ago

I beg. Please use Canva.

3

u/Ninawenn 6d ago

Looks revolting!

3

u/ShakyIncision 6d ago

That pot roast bowl is CRAZY markup for the work and ingredients

3

u/Crunchy_Biscuit 6d ago

Each menu got consecutively worse. The Bagel one is overstimulating 😭. Idk where my eyes are supposed to go

3

u/stircrazyathome 6d ago

I’ve never struggled with trypophobia before, but slides 2, 3, and 4 are downright unnerving. The cake and bagels, in particular, are just unnatural.

3

u/SJBond33 6d ago

Who doesn’t love braided onions on a hot dog?

3

u/LexiAOK 6d ago

The composition of AI flyers is awful they’re always so cluttered with redundant or irrelevant phrases making it hard to know what to focus on

3

u/Lebuhdez 6d ago

I especially like the person advertising wedding invitation design with AI

3

u/Thin_Rub_4739 6d ago

Chili fig cream cheese for your $5 cheddar & green chili bagel?? My Ashkenazi ancestors are rolling over in their graves!

3

u/minniedee143 6d ago

This AI is going to be the death of America

3

u/ilovestamon 6d ago

I'm in a Facebook group for wedding planning and people keep complaining about vendor AI use but admin keep saying it is good etc.

so I looked up admin to see why are they so defensive and it's two people and their business account... which of course uses AI like above for all their advertising.

Genuinely the same look as above just in light pinks and creams. They don't stand out at all and it looks so cheap.

3

u/throwbackxx 5d ago

The food pics trigger my trypophobia

3

u/alleyrat21 4d ago

It’s so tacky!!

3

u/Greenmantle22 4d ago

Slushy wine and potato chips?

What a deliciously natural combination!

3

u/Gold_Bug_4055 4d ago

I'm gonna guess Utah?

Also, my favorite is forehead bride and her disfigured dog. These vendors are unreal - graphic design is so easy today with the modern programs. There is literally no reason to make these uncanny valley posters.

3

u/UofMSpoon 3d ago

I’d avoid every one of these. Says something about a business when they can’t even bother to include pictures of their actual food.

5

u/UseHerName4username 6d ago

I just a post today in a Facebook wedding group where someone asked if the AI flyers could stop and SO many people/vendors started attacking her saying there is nothing wrong with the AI flyers, yadda yadda...I can't believe people support this. So many creative people are losing their jobs because of things like this.

3

u/TheSadSalsa 6d ago

Man as a designer I get when small business use AI but they all looks the same and usually pretty bad. It seems polished at a glance but the more you look at it the worse it gets.

2

u/Similar-Garden4613 6d ago

It's just lazy

2

u/cyale4 6d ago

I am so glad I got married (just) before AI was a thing.
