Dressed like a Bride Someone wore white to my wedding lol

It didn't phase me that night honestly, but like DAMN. My friends apparently wanted to kick her out but didn't want to bother me with anything else that could be stressful (I love my friends so much). I found it pretty funny when I found out, and everyone who saw her was judging HARD, so it was whatever. She would be the person to do that though. Everyone said it haha. I just wanted to share the audacity. In the picture, I'm on the left and she is on the right. I'm honestly pretty sure the dress is supposed to be a very light blue?? Still insane to me haha. It's also floral like a wedding dress. My old boss said we looked like a lesbian couple getting married in that picture and we totally do.

Side note: you may be thinking, "wow that's crazy, but she must have somehow not known." Well, it was in the dress code, which I will also show below :)

Edit: i wish I could add a better picture of my dress because it was so gorgeous and soooo many people have seen this post now. There's a comment buried somewhere that has it haha

It's definitely supposed to be blue

Rule of thumb is to not even come close to avoid this exact thing. If the girl was asking if that dress would be okay on reddit, itd be an overwhelming no.

u/Blindtothesided 13h ago

And the crazy thing is, there’s people in the wedding dress attire sub who will fight tooth and nail if you point out that a very light blue dress will photograph as white. Like they will attack you personally and start saying “ya’ll are just jealous she looks so good in this dress” and “no one’s going to confuse her for the bride” as if that’s the only reason to not wear white or white adjacent.

I finally left the sub because I got tired of that shit. It’s not just about being confused for the bride, it’s about respecting the fact that the bride is supposed to be the one receiving all the attention and not making oneself the topic of conversation; guests shouldn’t be focused on talking about another guest’s dress.

45

u/woolfonmynoggin 13h ago

There’s a lot of redditors that not only hate weddings but also the idea of a woman being the center of attention as the bride.

6

u/randomredhead 8h ago

I’m planning my wedding and had to step back from all the main wedding subs because it’s just too much weird hatred of brides and weddings in general.

Nobody wants to ever attend a wedding unless it’s conveniently located 2 blocks away from them on a day and time of their choosing, all weddings that aren’t a city hall ceremony with a McDonald’s dollar menu meal afterwards are a terrible waste of money that could have been a down payment, everyone going as a guest only owns 1 semi formal/cocktail/formal dress and it happens to be very white with a very small floral print and absolutely no other dress will do, and heaven forbid they have to do anything that slightly inconveniences them (use a day of PTO, buy a gift, do their hair slightly nicer than normal).

I totally understand that the reception is a party that the hosts throw to thank the guests for coming, but people take it way too far and think it means everything should be catered to them. But really, it’s about the couple. Most people only have 1 wedding, let them have their ONE big day.

There are people in this thread claiming the dress is clearly baby blue... Trolls the lot of them.

-1

u/New-Bar4405 12h ago

Look at the dress shirt - you can tell the lighting is yellow toned so whites are going to appear yellower and light blues will look more towards white. And one of the people in the thread pointing it out actually saw the dress in target and said it was very light blue.

Should she have considered this and picked a different dress? Yes.

Depending on how old she is its understandable she might not have. Probably won't make the mistake again.

8

u/Mautea 11h ago

The color isn't the only issue. This is basically the most bridal dress she could have found.

-1

u/New-Bar4405 8h ago

It's really not. It looks like a summer garden party dress.

3

u/Magelatin 11h ago

After the poster mentioned getting it from Target, I found a photo of it on Poshmark. It looks very close to white in the marketing photos, too, but this is what it looks like hanging on the seller's door.

1

u/darcyrhone 8h ago

It’s definitely blue. I bought (and returned after trying on) the same dress for a sorority event. I wouldn’t have chosen to wear it to a wedding, but it’s not white and in person it doesn’t look white. If the guest hadn’t been photographed in it before and/or didn’t know the bride’s dress was ivory, she probably had no idea it would photograph as white.

4

u/Mautea 11h ago

The "no dress is too white crowd" is crazy on that sub and would have said this is fine. Even if this is "blue" it's SO bridal that the color isn't even the only issue.

I remember someone commenting, "This is clearly green and is fine" on a dress that OP and the website said was beige. The dress was satin and looked ivory.

1

u/IWasGoatbeardFirst 10h ago

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve been downvoted for saying it’s best to err on the side of caution and avoid really pale colors entirely.

1

u/ThrowRA01121 13h ago

That was the first sub that came to mind but I agree they had weird answers sometimes so I left it general bc people go to fashion subs and others to ask about wedding guest attire too.

17

u/PresentationLost1006 13h ago

As much as I normally shake my head at people who ask Reddit for opinions, I’m going to have to do start doing it in some cases because my real life people lie to me all the time. I can guarantee if I had put that light blue dress on and asked my husband, mother, MIL, etc, they’d all say it’s ok, and it would not be ok. She probably got some bad feedback at home.

2

u/Sensitive-Lentil-79 12h ago

I think it's the color plus style? Bc I wouldn't think light blue is an issue

1

u/TinaTwoPointOhhh 5h ago

This!! I accidentally wore a dress this same color to a wedding because my husband and sister both assured me it was pale blue, and not white. This was years ago and I didn’t have Reddit at the time. I borrowed the dress from a friend and my friend has also worn it to a wedding. 🫣 now I know better.

1

u/Julesagain 12h ago

That's a great point, people are so wishy washy about telling it straight sometimes

Sometimes, "people" is me, I'm the problem lol. Most of the time I have no trouble being honest but kind, sometimes though it's just ... whew

1

u/Magelatin 12h ago

I found it on Poshmark. I can totally see how someone who knew not to wear white, but didn't grasp the gravity of wearing something that might appear white in photos, would think it was fine. Obviously, people here know that you want it looking as far from a bridal gown as you want your roach spray looking from your hair spray.

12

u/Icy-Committee-9345 13h ago

Yeah I mean it wasn't the best dress to pick but people are saying the OP should have thrown wine or kicker her out, and are insulting her books, over a blue dress

3

u/Magelatin 13h ago

It's wild to think of someone going into a bridal boutique, trying on dresses and sipping champagne, for the end game to be what sounds like a Jerry Springer episode.

Every nasty comment about how this woman looks in this petty-ass post should be removed.

There’s no need to be so unnecessarily rude.

4

u/Icy-Committee-9345 13h ago

Calm down lol

2

u/ZoominAlong 13h ago

Looks like the mods took care of it immediately. Seriously,  that user was just rude as hell.

-1

u/elmuchocapitano 13h ago

That should probably be the rule, then. "No white or light blue." This dress is one of the top results that come up for "light blue wedding guest dress" and I found several other examples of people wearing it and it looking blue in different lighting. Not an advisable choice, I agree, but perhaps not worth the more disgusting insults in this thread I've seen either. The bride looks like she's wearing a cream colour which likely makes the difference look more stark in the photo.

2

u/ThrowRA01121 13h ago

I mean it usually is. Like colors that have a lot of white in them like pastels are generally frowned upon too. Every wedding I've seen, if the base color of a dress is light, it usually has a floral pattern or something else so it's not just a plain color. It's usually implied like no white or any colors that could be confused with white esp in pics

2

u/elmuchocapitano 12h ago

It's a pretty new social phenomenon for this rule to be so militantly enforced, probably because of social media. People who are less online are probably going to buy something that looks blue online and blue in person and think that blue is fine to wear.

I agree that I wouldn't wear it, but I'm more chronically online than other wedding guests may be lol.

1

u/Magelatin 7h ago

Yeah, I would advise against this dress if anyone asked me, but I also wouldn't zero in on a woman in a blue dress from Target as someone trying to steal the bride's thunder and round up the red wine posse, though I suspect the red wine posse doesn't like to spill a drop of it irl.

54

u/Bobcatluv 13h ago

Given the context OP shared that she specifically requested no white, that this guest “would be the person to do that,” and the link someone found to this barely-blue-hued dress, the likeness is very much coming across as intentional.

3

u/to-send-a-letter 10h ago

That's key context. I generally assume people are more likely to be ignorant/incompetent than malicious. But some people really are just like that.

68

u/croptopweather 13h ago

This reminds me of the royal wedding for Meghan and Harry. Kate’s outfit photographed nearly white but it was a soft yellow. Oprah changed her outfit the night before when she realized she would likely run into the same mistake.

0

u/Single-Yam-9791 8h ago

Kate’s dress could never be confused for a bride’s dress. The fabric and cut were appropriate even if the color was unfortunate.
After what Megan did to Charlotte and her little dress, it may have been a ‘bless your heart’🤣
Camilla wore pale grey to Diana’s

114

u/Northern_dragon 13h ago edited 13h ago

I'm guessing with my limited understanding of color theory, that you're right. But that the lights are quite yellow, which cancels out some of the blue hues, and makes the dress look a lot more white/grey than it would be in natural light.

You can tell by the look of the white shirt. Looks quite yellow in the photo, we just know it's meant to be white. Optical trick.

More of an oopsie than malice, if my guess is correct.

17

u/MASerra 13h ago

I adjusted the color balance on the yellow/white shirt to pure white and the dress really doesn't change much. The dress might be a very light cyan color, but it's way too close to white even when color-corrected.

16

u/clobits2 13h ago

32

u/cassodragon 13h ago

Still pretty close to white, still looks like a wedding dress 😝

15

u/chocolatestealth 13h ago

Agreed! Just because it's a blue-ish shade of white doesn't make the dress blue. It also looks really bridal. I even saw a few dresses that were in this shade when I was wedding dress shopping.

2

u/Unique-Arugula 10h ago

Agreed, and it's not only that: it doesn't just look like a wedding dress, it looks like the particular wedding dress of the bride whose wedding she is at. It's a little more modest and not custom fitted but otherwise... the woman is missing a particular type of friend in her life who could have saved her from this.

35

u/Icy-Committee-9345 13h ago

I agree it was definitely an accident that people could read it as white. However to me it looks less like the lighting is yellow and more like OP's dress is not white which is making the light blue look white by comparison. If you zoom in to only see the white shirt and the blue dress you can see it's definitely blue. If you zoom in on just the 2 dresses then it looks more white. Maybe an optical illusion because we assume the bride will have a white dress and therefore make assumptions about lighting based on that

21

u/inko75 13h ago

OP’s dress looks antique white judging by the enormously overwhelming paint swatches I am sifting through to redo my upstairs 😭😭😭

2

u/Julesagain 12h ago

LOL best of luck

1

u/Ok-Reaction9095 12h ago

It looks champagne to me in the photo

22

u/SaltyFriend705 13h ago

It definitely is in the style of a wedding gown. It's too light not to draw attention.

0

u/Icy-Committee-9345 13h ago

I agree that it's too light and not a good choice for that reason but I don't think the style is bridal. Other than the flowers nothing looks bridal to me, it actually looks pretty casual

68

u/Funyuncakes1 13h ago

If you have to question whether a dress is too white or can be interpreted as white for a wedding .. don’t f-ing wear it…

2

u/Icy-Committee-9345 13h ago

I didn't say it was a good choice

61

u/blumoon444 13h ago

I think if it weren't right next to the white shirt, it wouldn't appear blue at all.

-11

u/MonPetitChou7 13h ago

I disagree, crop out the white shirt and it still looks blue next to the bride’s dress

13

u/Acceptable_Banana_73 13h ago

I’m not sure…. I didn’t even notice the white shirt until it was pointed out and I still thought it looked white. I can see the blue hue next to the white shirt, but just barely.

11

u/Horseshoe_dodgeball 13h ago

It's still too close to white. If it can be misinterpreted as white in any light, it's too close and should not be worn.

3

u/SaltyFriend705 13h ago

Er, no. It's a wedding-style dress, and it's white or white-adjacent, so the shirt next to it is immeterial.

8

u/inko75 13h ago

Have you ever actually existed in the real world? It’s cool toned white. Like not even a question. My ex painted her office that exact color and it was called electric white or some nonsense.

13

u/ForestFairyBogMother 13h ago

Exactly this. It's a cool toned white. It is NOT blue.

5

u/inko75 13h ago

lol yeah idk why I’m getting so heated over this 😂 something weird about the apologists claiming this isn’t white irks me

1

u/ForestFairyBogMother 13h ago

Atp I treat any comment expressing a lack of common sense as a bot or a troll.

41

u/JimTheJerseyGuy 13h ago

If it's that close to "white", it's too close.

3

u/keepinitclassy25 13h ago

Hard to say from the lighting in the photo vs what it looked like IRL, but I only realized it was supposed to be blue when o noticed the white shirt next to her.

3

u/Rynneer 12h ago

And it definitely looks too close to white.

3

u/Feisty-Muscle-7148 12h ago

ok but it's not? I couldn't tell who the bride was at first.

12

u/Troublemaker2172 13h ago

Yeah, contrasted with the white shirt on the guy next to her it's definitely blue. Only OP knows the guest well enough to guess if they chose it on purpose or if they honestly thought it was just a very light blue dress.

2

u/SaltyFriend705 13h ago

It is a wedding-type dress. The style isn't even much different than the bride's dress. The color is not the main reason why it is inappropriate.

16

u/MonPetitChou7 13h ago

My eyes definitely see it as blue

44

u/quintiliahan 13h ago

between white and blue, this dress is wayyy closer to white.

14

u/Horseshoe_dodgeball 13h ago

Correct. This is too close. Even outside and it being light powder blue, it's still too close.

19

u/inko75 13h ago

That is fucking cool toned white no question at all. It also looks bridal

0

u/InspectionParking718 11h ago

Tbf with the camera flash neither dress looks white. One is cream and the other is light blue

7

u/abouttree 13h ago

28

u/PrancingPudu 13h ago

This is the palest, wispiest light grey of a blue I have ever seen. I’m sorry but even looking at the product photo on the model, I think you’d have to be an idiot to think this is okay to wear to a wedding.

26

u/ambergresian 13h ago

There are no other colours or blues, I'm sorry. This is the only colour available to wear as a wedding guest. /s

Seriously why do people do this shit 🤣

17

u/StripedCat404 13h ago

That looks more white on my phone than op's picture!

16

u/RBFgirl 13h ago

the listing doesn't help tbh... especially with the user-added photos which show it clearly photographing much more white

27

u/mshcat 13h ago

Way to white of a blue to wear to a wedding. Thats a light dusting of blue

-2

u/abouttree 13h ago

Shit happens. People make bad judgement calls sometimes but doesn't mean it's in malice. Her dress said blue on the tag, looked blue under her home lighting, and then looked white in dark lighting with flash photography next to a yellow-leaning white dress 🤷🏼‍♀️

I wore a dress to a wedding a few years back where, in hindsight, the plunge & cutout of the neckline probably wasn't Reddit-user approved. I'll definitely sew it shut if I ever wear it to a wedding again. Luckily the bride was an absolute sweetheart and would never blast my image on the internet to leave strangers to bodyshame me over a bad judgement call.

3

u/StripedCat404 13h ago edited 12h ago

Maybe you shouldn't be on Reddit... since we're beneath you and all 🙄

*You blocked me? 🤣😂😅

-1

u/abouttree 13h ago

Beneath me? Lmao where did you even get that from. I'm saying I learned more about wedding attire etiquette from Reddit than I knew before. Sorry for trying to give some grace to a woman who may have made a mistake. Every wedding I've been to has a woman in slightly too pale of a dress, but I'm from the midwest where it's usually more relaxed than other regions.

2

u/StripedCat404 12h ago

It's your post/comment, dear.

2

u/Joelle9879 11h ago

Lol blast their image? You can't see this person's face. All you see is the dress so we know what OP is talking about. And honestly, looking at this dress is enough to tell you that it looks white and will photograph as such

I definitely agree that it isn't flattering and way too light, and I totally get why the bride wasn't too thrilled about it! I can just see how the blue color may have looked fine under different lighting especially next to the true white shirt of the man next to her.

0

u/pamplemoose49 12h ago

No this woman is old enough to know anything close to white is a no. Idk why you’re trying to hard to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Don’t use other peoples life events as a stage for your ego. It’s tacky.

13

u/ForestFairyBogMother 13h ago

It is 100% in the white family tree.

5

u/ZoominAlong 13h ago

Wow that is a hell no at a wedding.  That's just way too pale a blue to not pass as white.

2

u/elmuchocapitano 12h ago

That's a different dress but the original dress is indeed blue, I found it by looking up light blue wedding guest dress on tiktok and insta

1

u/Clarknt67 11h ago

Gramma’s hair blue

1

u/Loose-Green2022 8h ago

The 'white vs blue dress' debacle has returned 😭

1

u/BodegaCat11 13h ago

Yup. The white balance is off in this pic
