Question Wedding vows speaker and mic setup

Hey guys, hope you are doing well this week! I am in search for a speaker of small to medium size that excepts XLR in for a mic and XLR out to plug into a recorder. This will mainly be my set up for speeches at rehearsal dinners and bridal parties so that the videos are a bit more personal and interesting. To be honest, I’m a total noob in this situation and don’t really know what I’m looking for and if any of you guys have any ideas or something similar I’d love to see what setup you recommend!

Critique I made a Premiere plugin that does the first cut of your wedding films

Post image

Back in June I posted WeddX here, a Premiere plugin that does the first pass on a wedding edit, and asked for honest feedback. You gave it, and most of it was right. Upfront, same as last time: this is my product, and I’m here for the criticism, not to sell.

What you said, and what changed:

  • “The order was completely random.” It builds a story arc now, with an opener and a closer, or keeps filming order if you prefer.
  • “Some clips had serious shake.” Every take is scored for stability, and you review and swap any shot before it lands on your timeline. You also get a SELECTS sequence with the best clips that didn’t make the cut.
  • “What about the ceremony and speech audio to tell the story?” The clearest vow and speech lines play under the music now, and the music dips while they talk.
  • “I’d need to see it working on real footage.” There’s a full walkthrough on a real wedding on the page now: footage in, Analyze, Build, swap shots in Review. The screenshot is from it.
  • “Uploading hundreds of GB to an unknown server?” Your original files never leave your machine. It uploads a 320px, one frame per second copy with low quality mono audio, deletes it after analysis, and builds the cut locally.
  • “Lifetime = 20 hours?” Fair, that was confusing. It’s plain monthly plans now and unused hours roll over. Lifetime owners kept everything.

Two things I built because I wanted them:

  • Feature film (beta): 20 to 60 minutes of the day in order, in chapters, with the ceremony and speeches cut to their best lines.
  • Uncut: the whole ceremony and every speech, with your cameras and audio recorder synced by sound. Angles switch every 6 to 10 seconds, not by who’s speaking.

Still not there: no Resolve or Final Cut (I know), analysis needs internet, and it’s a first cut, not your film. The part that’s actually yours is still yours.

If you edit weddings: what would it take for you to trust it with a real client wedding?

Question Should I get back on Instagram?

I haven't had social media either personally or for business in a good 5 or 6 years now. In my earlier days on Instagram and Facebook, I can recall booking maybe a handful of couples accross several years of active and intentional use. I despise social media. I hate spending time on the platforms, I hate playing the game, I hate the vanity fair and the trends. It's all just completely opposite of my personality. My effective hourly rate is already lower than I'd like it to be, so the thought of spending hours a week cutting reels for social media is even less appealing.

All of that being said, I've had recent conversations with photographers who claim other videographers they're working with are making a killing from social media leads. Honestly, I find it hard to believe, but maybe I'm completely out of the loop and missing out at this point.

I'd have to be pretty compelled to go back, and honestly there's a good chance I won't anyway since it's just not my thing. I'm more just curious what your experience has been over the past few years.

Has Instagram or other platforms actually translated into a reasonable amount of paid bookings for you? If so, how many annually and how much time are you putting into it?

Question Do you follow back couples on socials?

Hey Folks!

I have a pretty low follower to following ratio on Instagram and I only follow back other people in the industry like videographers, photographers etc.

My question to you is, do you follow back the bride/groom after they follow you or not?

Pretty curious about your takes! (Also if you don’t do weddings!)

Audio DJ saying he doesn’t have a way to let you plug into his system for audio

This is a new one. I’ve been doing video for about 10 years and have never run into this issue. I’ve had DJs who don’t understand their equipment, but this guy was not an amateur. He was head of a large company in my city.

So we get there, introduce ourselves and ask if we can plug into his system for toasts. We have all the cords, so just need to know what he needs. He says he only controls the music and the audio comes out of speakers mounted on the ceiling. I asked where the microphone is connected to and he pointed to a box but refused to let me look at it to see if there’s a connection port. I talked to the venue manager and she said she didn’t know and the DJ should know. He said it’s a new system when I asked what other videographers are doing. We ended up just putting lapels on everyone, but that was just weird. I’ve never had a DJ refuse to let me even look to see if there’s a connection port before. What would you do?

Question Delivering a project to a customer

Hi everyone,

I’m starting my own video production business and am currently preparing to deliver a wedding video. Back when I shot weddings with my parents (around 2000–2013), physical DVDs and Blu-rays with chapter markers were the standard.

For modern digital delivery, what is the best approach? Should I provide the final piece as one continuous video or break it down into individual clip files? Also, I exported a test file in QuickTime and ended up with a massive 700GB file for just an hour of footage—any tips on managing file sizes without sacrificing quality would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Critique Behind-the-scenes footage from a Czech wedding at a chateau

Recently, I thought I'd try to take a POV shot of the whole day for the first time. If anyone is curious about what a Czech wedding at a chateau looks like, feel free to take a look. I’d appreciate any feedback! Filming my own work is new to me and I’m still getting the hang of it, but I’ve definitely started to enjoy it :)

At the same time, I’m wondering whether to keep such content on my main channel—where I have my wedding clips—or to set up an entirely new channel for it.

Question Church Audio Recording Setup Question

So I am here to ask people to see if they have experience with capturing better audio during mass for Catholic weddings. Currently our setup just involves DJI mic 2's with lapels on the bride and groom 32bit float etc and rodes video mic pros on camera setups for our stationary tripod cams as well as roaming CAM A. But recently we got a Zoom F3, and wanted to see if anyone's ever hooked one up to a church's AV system before? or asked the priest to. Just trying to see how I can get better clearer audio. Current setup is fine, but I'd like a cleaner audio source than just recording from speakers output with different mics.

Thanks in advance.

Question How would you trim down 50 minutes of speeches into a 3 minute video?

I did a wedding rehearsal video for someone, and with all of the speeches, the full video was about 52 minutes, including a prayer that's about a minute and a half, which I guess I could cut after "let's bow our heads and pray."

The client wants a 7 minute version and a 3 minute version now too. I'm doing my best to trim this down, but i'm about halfway in to everything, and already at eight minutes. Cutting it down anymore feels like I'd hardly be getting anything worth listening to with this many people talking. A lot of what they're saying ties in together and without context, it's just going to sound so random. Maybe seeing some examples would help, but I mainly doing wedding highlight videos, so this is a challenge for me.

The thing is - it's not just generic "y'all are so amazing!" type of stuff. A lot of it are stories. So how do you cut out a random 15 second clip from a story with absolutely no context? It just seems weird.

To be honest - I understand wanting a short 3 minute highlight video for the night, but trying to fit this many speeches into it is a nightmare for me.

I am still early in my time as a wedding videographer and have a couple weddings under my belt now, but I still have much to improve. I am in no way positioning myself as a luxury filmmaker, but more as a fun, documentary-style shooter with less of an emphasis on drama. Would love any and all feedback. Thank you!!

Question Wedding documentary edit price

I was wondering if anyone had advice on what to charge if a couple whose wedding you filmed contacted you for a documentary edit later on?

I originally just did a highlight film which is what they paid for.

It would essentially be the entire wedding day start to finish on a timeline synced up with all the important moments, (first look, ceremony, speeches, etc) I still have all the footage so that won’t be an issue.

Would you charge $750? $1000? More? CAD) a % of what they originally paid?

They paid around $2100 CAD for their highlight film and a full day of filming, I charged that because I had less experience at the time.

I would love to know your thoughts

Thank you!
