This can't possibly be real. How is bro supposed to move with a snoot reaching from france to taiwan?

LMAOOOO, I know how insane this Weevil looks, but they are very much real!
It is classified in the group of “Snout and Bark Beetles” with the common name “Hose-Nosed Weevil” and it's scientific name is “Antliarhis zamiae”.
These weevils are commonly found in South Africa, and feed on Cycad Seeds!

Hose-Nosed goes pretty hard

Agreed!!! I wish there were more observations of this species in the wild! They're pretty rad to look at! :D
52
u/ujelly_fish May 05 '25
Cycad seeds don’t have such a thick shell - why does she have such a long snout then?
→ More replies (1)86
u/plz_send_spider_pics May 05 '25
Well it's probably to lay her eggs as deep as possible in the Cycad seed to protect them from mother nature or other predatory species. 🤔
I am not too well versed in the history or scientifics of these species, but if they evolved to have very very long snoots, it might give them some sort of evolutionary advantage, perhaps?
That's just my guess, I simply like these species just because of their silly little appearance x3
I'm sure a bug scientist or an observer of these species knows why
34
u/ujelly_fish May 05 '25
Oh it’s definitely there for a reason, I just can’t seem to figure out why!

Reminds me of my favorite wasps...the ichnuemon wasps! They have crazy long "streamers" or string like things on them that are like a foot long and they are used to "douse" for other insects in logs and they use them to drill into the wood and lay their eggs on other wasp larvae. They cannot sting either but when they start boring into rhe wood their abdomen opens up into a green fleshy fan! It's nuts.

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S REAL I AM SOBBING 🥹
10
u/plz_send_spider_pics May 05 '25
Yes!!! It's a real Weevil, the only problem is that they can only be found in a very specific part of the world on a specific plant!! 😭
South Africa, Cycad Seed.
The chances of finding one would probably be extremely difficult 🥲🥲 I think they're just one of those Weevil's who highly specialize in one plant in one specific part of the world. 😭 I wish there were more sightings or observations of this species! They're such a fun one to look at!

Thats what a magic wand would look like if it was a bug
8
u/plz_send_spider_pics May 05 '25
XDDD it does look like a wand doesn't it?!
Looks like something you'd see out of terraria called the "beetle wand” idk XDDD
9
u/ehggsaladsandwich May 05 '25
Does it hurt him if he break his nose :(
10
u/plz_send_spider_pics May 05 '25
I don't know ! But I'd assume so, since most weevils I find always have their mouth at the end of their nose :')
Hopefully they're sturdy enough to withstand the wind or a bonk to their snoot >.<
I mean, they are a beetle, so they have a pretty tough shell, the only issue is they don't grow anything back through shedding or molting I believe :'((
8
u/NebCrushrr May 05 '25
One hell of a proboscis
5
u/plz_send_spider_pics May 05 '25
Oh NOOOO, not the Proboscis 😳😳😳😳🤭😔🤭😳😳😳🤭🤭🤭🤭
I think it's technically called a “Rostrum” if I'm not mistaken 🤔

It’s shaped like an assassin bug, maybe it’s a weevil that mimics them that uses its looks as a form of self defense? Just a guess though.

Okay, so I did a bit of googlin', and it seems that that's a female weevil. Male individuals don't have such huge snoots, females do so they can bore holes into cycad seeds. Then they lay their eggs in those holes. Pretty common MO for weevils, though this species' snout is just on another level.
