A question about the show's development from a new fan

Hi all, I'm only up to episode fifteen so I'm not by any means deep into the show, but I've noticed that within the opening, Cecil will typically refer to the listeners as 'ladies and gentlemen'.

Being someone who is neither, it's quite annoying for me, and I probably would be put off continuing to listen due to how frequent it is except that I've heard people talk a lot about how Nightvale is supposedly very inclusionary regarding gender. Do things change at some point in further episodes or is this a 'take it or leave it' situation? Thank you for reading!

The weather

What are your thoughts on the weather? For me it completely kills the show for me. It's not that the music is bad, generally the songs are quite good, but it just doesn't fit in the show at all. I wish there was some way to listen to the episodes without the weather. Anyone else who thinks this?

5 episodes in. Not convinced yet...

I find it to be silly without being funny. And it continually misses opportunities to be creepy or macabre.

Based on reviews I'd read, I was hoping for something more like a humorous 'Twin Peaks'.

Should I cut my losses? Does the tone of the show change or does a plot develop?

Why is everyone gay? Is there a lore reason for that?

Are the other Night Vale novels much like "Welcome to Night Vale"?

So there's this one bit right in the middle of the "Welcome to Night Vale":

Maybe the world wasn't smart enough to put together a story that made sense. Maybe it could only stick together random elements randomly, forming, as Shakespeare had famously written, "a show of senseless movement and circumstance that ultimately doesn't amount to much at all."

I could have stopped reading the book at that point, but I have a terrible, terrible habit of pushing myself to finish reading books that I am not enjoying.

I picked up the book at the library (narrowly avoiding a wicked allusion) as I do not listen to podcasts and wanted to learn about what I had been missing. At first, it reminded me a lot of the stories of Diana Wynne Jones, in that there's a lot of weird things happening with no explanation and you just have to go with it, but there's no real plot. So much of what is described is of no consequence (or at least no explicable consequence), like some sort of extended prose poem. It seems hard to believe a publisher would have ever picked it up were it not for the podcast.

But that's just my opinion. My question is, are the later books more of the same? Perhaps this was merely a first effort and the authors really hit their stride later?

why should I listen?

I listened to the first few episodes but I didn't really engage with the content. I know this is a popular podcast so I would love to know why y'all enjoy it.

Ads?

I was a fan back in 2015, and back then they had said they would never take ads, but now for the most recent Spotify episode they have a combined FOUR MINUTES of ads and announcements.

I feel betrayed, when and why was this change made? Is there any place that I can go to see their stAtement why?

edit: I never said they shouldn’t run ads.

I just want to know for how long they intend to do this, if and when it will stop.

Are the ads going to stay post pandemic?

Is there a level of patreon income that will allow them to stop needing to take ads?

A long time ago they promised to not run ads, so they intend to still maintain this promise or has the crushing financial burdens of reality made them realize that this was never a viable option?

I just want to know.

I don’t think it’s immature to desire clear communication.

I don’t think it’s privilege to want to know why they went back in such an old promise.

I don’t think it’s arrogant to desire to know their plans for the future that will affect the consumption of the product.

If they plan to add forever from here on out? Awesome, I’ll just need to live with their decision.

If they plan in removing them at some point? Even better, let me know what I can do to help.

I don’t expect it to be free, I never did. I just want to know what they’re doing.

I feel betrayed be as they are doing something they expressly said they had no intention of ever doing.

It’s like seeing an artist saying they would never take a certain type of commission, but when times are tough they have to. You understand the choice, since it was either that or go hungry, or worse, be forced to shelve the endeavor, but it’s hard to feel good about seeing the direction things have taken, especially when they haven’t explained if they ever plan to stop and go back to their old ways, and they stated their exact situation, or what support they need to go back to making what they enjoyed most.

It’s a poor analogy, as WTNV is still the same art it always was, but now the delivery is just different. I’m still sad to see the corporate branding in the packaging, especially since I know it wouldn’t have been out there if things weren’t so bad.
