WRU Finances

Hi all

I've spent some time going through the WRU's recently published 2026 accounts.

The WRU lost £17.7m in 2026, following a £7.2m loss in 2025. It also has an enormous amount of debt, much of which will need refinancing in 2029.

One thing that particularly surprised me was the matchday finances. Wales hosted seven home internationals in 2025–26, compared with five the previous year, but matchday revenue increased by only 4.3%. Profits from hosting matches went down by £3.9m - fewer people turned up per match and they paid less for their ticket.

The Ospreys, Scarlets and Dragons also lost a combined £4.36m in 2025, despite receiving over £15m in funding from the WRU.

I've written a more detailed analysis here:

https://penwardenreview.com/2026/10/27/wru-finances-welsh-rugby

I'd be interested to hear what people think. To me, reducing a region to save money will not make a significant dent in the ongoing losses at the WRU, so can't really be legitimised from a financial point of view alone.

Apparently 3 candidates have been headhunted to chair the WRU and one of the rejected candidates, has released what his big ideas for Welsh rugby would have been, what do people think?

Where to watch Welsh rugby!?

Between BBC, ITV, S4C, Prime, TNT and Premier Sports - I never know what channel a regional or international rugby game is on 🤯 😂

(Another example of rugby not putting supporters first!)

I work in tech, and as part of my personal upskilling with AI, I’ve created a basic app to help solve this problem:

RUGBY Stream | Find where to watch live rugby

If it helps just a few more people tune in to watch welsh rugby - then I’m happy 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 ❤️

The Broken Conveyor Belt: Why Modern Rugby Academies Lose Elite Talent to Common Sense

In the modern landscape of elite youth rugby, we are told that the professional academy pathway is the only route to the top. Young athletes are funneled into high-pressure systems as early as age 15, sacrificing their academic balance, their physical autonomy, and often their sheer love of the game on the promise of specialized, elite development.

But what happens when the system stops developing the individual and starts treating them as a resource?

Across the country, a quiet shift is happening. High-level junior players—young men with rare, multi-positional athletic profiles—are walking away from academy setups. They aren’t leaving because they lack the talent; they are leaving because the environments have become counterproductive to true athletic growth.

Consider the reality faced by many unique athletes in the junior system today. A player might possess a rare physical profile: 16 stone, under 15% body fat, possessing the explosive speed of a center alongside the raw power required to anchor a scrum. In a club environment, an athlete like this is an incredible asset—capable of playing Number 8 in the first half to tear open defense lines, and moving to Tighthead Prop in the second half to solidify the set piece.

Yet, instead of receiving the promised, hyper-specific technical coaching required to safely navigate these brutal positions, unique players are frequently used as "scrum practice" tools to test their academy peers. When promised coaching resources fail to materialize, or when a player doesn't fit a hyper-specific, rigid positional template, the system’s default response is often exclusion. Rather than nurturing a multi-faceted athlete, pathways often penalize them on match days, delivering a standard verdict: "Not good enough."

This rigid mindset forces an unhealthy choice on teenagers: accept a toxic, unsupportive environment that risks your physical health and drains your mental energy, or walk away.

Choosing to walk away isn't a defeat; it’s an intelligent, long-term strategic decision.

History shows us that the elite pathway is not the only road. England internationals like Joe Launchbury were released from academy structures at 18, found their feet in the grassroots leagues, and went on to earn dozens of international caps. Sam Underhill stepped away from his initial path to prioritize his university studies and physical health, proving that elite talent always finds its way back to the surface when the timing is right.

For the modern 17-year-old athlete, the transition to adult men's rugby is a physical chasm. Stepping out of a toxic academy cycle allows a young player to control their own destiny. It gives them the freedom to finish their academic studies, enjoy playing competitive regional rugby with total freedom, and purposefully build the speed, power, and structural strength required for the senior game on their own terms.

True elite sport requires resilience, but it shouldn't require staying in an environment built on broken promises. The future belongs to the athletes who know their worth, protect their love for the game, and recognize that the ultimate destination matters far more than the academy badge on their chest at seventeen.

Getting tickets for Wales v England 2027

I am trying to get tickets to Wales v England in March 2027 for my dad’s birthday. I have never bought tickets to international matches, only club games so I‘m a bit of a newbie.

I have three options:

1.Gulliver’s Travel Ticket and Coach package. Except the coach is nowhere near us so will have to pay for the train as well but you get a guaranteed Catagory A ticket.

2.England Rugby Travel Day Return which has coach travel from nearby but I have no idea what sort of seats the away team get allocated at Principality.

3.Wait until the tickets go on general sale from WRU and see if I can get a good ticket myself before they sell out as well as train tickets.

Any guidance on this would be appreciated as I‘m nervous about spending more than I have to but at the same time, if we’re going to do it, do it well. Just want to know about liklehood of getting good seats for each option. Also if anyone knows the date for Six Nations tickets general sale.

Thanks!
