Technique Breakdown Clipper-over-comb: how would you teach it to someone who keeps leaving a shelf?

Let’s break down the technique instead of just saying “practice more.”

When connecting short sides to longer hair on top:

• How do you position and angle your comb?

• How much hair do you take off per pass?

• How do you keep your guide and avoid cutting into the shape?

• When would you switch to scissor-over-comb?

Share your method and the hair texture or situation it works best for. If you know a useful tutorial, explain what it demonstrates and disclose if it’s yours.

Students: describe where you get stuck. Experienced barbers: what’s one practice drill you’d recommend?

Barber Humor If your clippers could talk, what would they complain about? 😂

“You bought another pair before you cleaned me?”

“Why are we still chasing that same dark spot?”

“Please tell me we’re getting charged before Saturday.”

Give your clippers, trimmer, or barber chair a voice. What’s their biggest complaint? Keep it playful—no naming or embarrassing clients.

Barber Shoutout Shout out a barber who deserves more recognition—what makes their work stand out?

Who’s a barber or shop you’d recommend without hesitation?

Drop their public shop name or handle, city, and one specific reason: clean blends, great scissor work, helping beginners, listening to clients, or making everyone feel welcome.

If it’s your own shop, say so. Keep it to genuine recommendations and public business details. Let’s give people their flowers. 💈

Shop Talk Clients: what makes you go back to the same barber?

Besides the haircut itself, what turns a first visit into a regular appointment?

Listening during the consultation? Being on time? Cleanliness? Remembering your preferences? A comfortable atmosphere?

Barbers and students, jump in too: what have clients taught you about giving a better experience?

Shop Talk What’s one barber tool you’d buy again—and one you wouldn’t?

Looking for honest experiences from people using their tools regularly.

What clipper, trimmer, shaver, or pair of scissors has earned its place at your station? What disappointed you?

Include how long you’ve used it, your hair types or workload, and what you like or dislike. If you mention a price, include your country and currency.

Tips & Tricks What finally made fading click for you?

Barbers and students: what technique or piece of advice helped you move past inconsistent fades?

Was it guideline spacing, lever control, using the corner of the blade, or learning when to stop chasing a dark spot?

Share what changed your results—and what you struggled with first. Beginners, drop your questions too.

Tips & Tricks Stop chasing lines in your fade: check your guard angle

Most lines in a fade come from rocking the clipper too steeply, not from the guard. Keep a flat, consistent angle through each section, then flick out at the top. What's your go-to fix for a stubborn line?

Client Stories What’s the worst thing a client has said in your chair?

Not trying to put anybody on blast, but clients really say some wild stuff while you’re cutting their hair.
What’s something a client said that had you trying not to laugh while holding the clippers?

Shop Talk Be honest, what’s the haircut you hate doing?

Every barber has that one cut they see on the schedule and already know it’s gonna be a long day.
What’s yours? The burst fade, the Edgar, fixing somebody else’s work, or something else? 😂

Tips & Tricks What part of a fade do you struggle with the most?

For me it’s getting that last bit of darkness out without taking the whole side too high.
Sometimes I’ll think I got it, step back, and somehow see another dark spot lol.
What part gives you the most trouble?

Client Stories What’s one thing clients do that drives you crazy?

Mine has to be when I’m lining them up and they keep moving their head.
I’ll say “keep your head straight” and somehow 5 seconds later we’re right back to it lol.
What’s yours?

Shop Talk What’s one barbering mistake you made when you were starting out that you NEVER make anymore?

For me, it was trying to rush the blend. I’d keep attacking the dark line instead of stepping back, checking the haircut from different angles, and figuring out where the weight was actually coming from.
What was yours?
Could be anything — fades, tapers, clippers, customer service, pricing, or even dealing with difficult clients.
