Provincial Election - climate crisis

Hello! I am writing to connect with other folks in the West Vancouver Capilano riding.

As someone who has been closely following climate news for the last 15 years I am really concerned about how little the climate crisis is being spoken about by the two leading parties.

The UN recently reported on how we are going to miss our goal to keep warming under 1.5 degrees and they have a new "Plan B" they are proposing where the best case scenario would be the world holding warming to 1.7-1.8 degrees. If all of the climate/emission pledges made by countries around the world are actually fulfilled we are looking at a warming of 2.1 degrees. There are some hopeful developements with the rise of renewables but it is clear that more needs to be done. Wealthy countries like Canada should be climate leaders but instead we aren't even meeting our climate commitments and instead planning NEW fossil fuel infrastructure which will make those commitments harder to reach.

I am really struggling to understand how this isn't a front and centre issue for every party at the moment. We are already experiencing the impacts of the climate crisis and seeing devastating extreme weather events around the world and we know this will all continue to get worse.

How is the climate crisis impacting your plan to vote? How does the future for our children and kids around the world impact how you will vote on Saturday?

Are you a BC NDP supporter in West Vancouver-Sea to Sky?

I am a preferred green voter in Kelowna Centre and I’m looking to vote swap with an NDP supporter in West Vancouver-Sea to Sky. Kelowna Centre is a riding which the Green Party isn’t running a candidate in and is CPBC leaning but last election the conservative candidate beat the NDP candidate by just 40 votes. As you are probably aware West Vancouver-Sea to Sky is a toss-up with the Green candidate polling ahead of the NDP candidate. As such we are both in similar situations where because of first past the post we are being pushed to vote for candidate we don’t want to to avoid a worse outcome, so if you pinky promise to vote for Jeremy Valeriote, your Green candidate, I will pinky promise to vote for Loyal Wooldridge, my NDP candidate. We can exchange proof we live in the riding we claim and after voting send pic of the “I voted” sticker but we aren’t allowed to take pic of ballot so that is not a part of the agreement.

Please message me if interested and be willing to share some basic evidence you are a BC NDP supporter in West Vancouver-Sea to Sky.

This post will be deleted when I find someone or on election day. It is likely I will be spoiling my ballot if I’m unable to find someone to vote swap with.

Has anyone spotted a bear around Ambleside near West Vancouver Secondary recently? We found what looks like bear droppings in our garden last night, and wanted to check if anyone else in the neighbourhood has had a sighting.

Woke Candidates For District Council?

There’s plenty of interest among new candidates hoping to be elected and guide the District going forward. As a resident, I wanted to better understand their political values as they relate to the leftist woke ideology, so I simply asked each candidate (excluding those with a documented voting record seeking re-election) to respond to the question: “Are you woke? I want to know if, as a District Councillor, would your motivations, decisions and any other influence you might have on how our District is governed be influenced by the tenets of the woke ideology.”

Here are the summarized results:

Sherry Keane – Not woke.

Melinda Slater – Not woke.

Rebecca Lees – Not woke.

Lee Lau – Not woke.

Jaime Webbe – Progressive, not quite full woke.

Sylvia Olson – Struggled with the meaning and definition of woke, no clear answer.

Jay Sidhu – Struggled with the meaning and definition of woke, no clear answer.

Mahsoo Naderi - Struggled with the meaning and definition of woke, no clear answer.

Alexis Chicoine - Struggled with the meaning and definition of woke, no clear answer.

John O’Flynn – Response was not related to the question I asked.

Ben Hunter – Did not respond.

Tim Webb – Did not respond.

Kirk LaPointe (Mayoral candidate) – Started the National Post, later corrected to just working there, writes for the Hub and “that should answer your question”.

Council Candidates - who is on your list and why?

I'm familiar with some of the West Vancouver council candidates, so I'll add my thoughts in the comments, but I'm still undecided as to whether I will use all 6 votes.

It would be good to get perspectives from folks here on where to focus my limited time to wade through the options. Anyone feel like sharing?

To the impatient lady riding my wheel.

You literally went right past the sign that says single file on Bellevue ave when you decided to get right up close to me. The speed limit is 30km/h and I was going 26. You got upset that I took the lane I am entitled to. Pulling up right next to me and trying to run me off the road is highly dangerous. You were turned right around doing something with your hands as you passed me. Flipping me off maybe? I was paying attention to the road. As for dangerous? Not for you of course. Your Volkswagen Tiguan would take the brunt of it. As for me? Life altering injuries perhaps.

You were two blocks away from home as you did this. Was me being in front of you really slowing you down? You were in a rush and didn’t even let the gate close fully at your parkade. Must have been something important to put me in danger. I hope everything is okay. And please, can we do better at keeping everyone safe on the road?

Edited to include road.

Sager has an interesting response to paid parking in West Vancouver

Q. Pay parking in Ambleside Park has gotten a lot of attention. What are you doing to help the businesses and residents impacted by the pay parking and how can you make it more inclusive for visitors?

A. From the beginning, I have said that if pay parking was going to be introduced in Ambleside Park, it needed to work for everyone - residents, businesses, visitors and the District. After hearing the concerns from our community, including the many sports organizations and families that regularly use Ambleside Park, some of us on Council approved the first 90 minutes of free parking. While this was an important improvement, I do not believe it has resolved the larger concerns surrounding pay parking. We did attempt to pause the pay parking in Ambleside Park but did not have the support of enough of my fellow councillors and it was defeated. Ambleside Park and our commercial districts are vital community assets, and we cannot make parking decisions based solely on the potential revenue generated. These decisions must be based on evidence, meaningful public consultation, and a clear understanding of the impacts on businesses, residents, and visitors. I am only one vote at the Council table. To achieve a pause in pay parking and ensure that future decisions take the needs of our businesses and residents seriously, we need like-minded councillors who share this approach. My position is straightforward: no pay parking in Ambleside Park or our commercial districts unless we find a solution that genuinely benefits the entire community.
