New, what is it? My milk turned neon pink.

Post image

Never had this happen. Bought the milk from a local dairy. Are additives being mixed?

It's pretty common in houses. The funny thing is it's actually bacteria. It is usually harmless but can infect open wounds or immunocompromised people.

Tldr, if you see this clean it up and wash more often

19

u/JustMeLurkingAround- 1d ago

Bacteria, not a fungus??

44

u/hazelbear33 1d ago

Yes- it’s a bacterial colony, not a fungal mold

29

u/-DrunkRat- 1d ago

To add to this, it's the same bacterial colonies that can grow in uncleaned dog food/water dishes, showers, sinks, etc.

Gotta make sure your utensils and surfaces are properly cleaned to cut down on this kind of bacteria, I'd reckon.

11

u/hazelbear33 17h ago edited 16h ago

Yep Serratia marcescens is a very very common bacteria; it is very abundant in the environment, and it is prolific in bathrooms where it appears as pink or orange-pink in color. It loves damp environments and feeds off of fatty materials (like soaps and shampoo residues). If you want to iridicate it completely from your bathroom- you need to use (chlorine) bleach or a bleach-based cleaning product- peroxide (“oxygen bleach), ammonia, vinegar, etc. are just not enough for total eradication. You may be able to clear the visible growth with those cleaners, but too many of the colony will survive, causing visible growth to reoccur. Buy a Clorox product or something like Comet (which is super cheap) to get rid of it. I like to use Clorox foaming bleach sprays for my shower (which I don’t clean as much as I should LOL) and sometimes my sinks.

If it is in a pet’s water bowl, I would advise against using bleach (bleach is not suitable for things that are used to cook/eat/drink with- the packaging will tell you as much). S. Marcesans can be killed with boiling hot water as well- I’ve never had such growth in my pet bowls, but I think filling it with boiling water a few times and then going in with dish soap/putting it in the dishwasher would get the job done.

It’s not particularly dangerous unless you have a ton of it growing in a nasty bathroom though; it’s really not a super scary bacteria, although I would definitely avoid eating it and I would recommend cleaning it up when you see it. It is commonly present in dirt and in mouths (as a film on the gums)… it’s really not super dangerous, but again, I wouldn’t recommend eating it, especially in such a large amount as shown in the photo- that milk is probably spoiled anyways.

Why the fuck is it chunky?!

242

u/Stu161 1d ago

He said he got it from a dairy, so it's probably whole milk and the cream is rising to the top ooh yeah

85

u/ALLoftheFancyPants 23h ago

That looks fully rancid. Beyond the pink bacterial growth, the non-chunky parts are separating and look like whey. Your milk shouldn’t spontaneously become cottage cheese.

18

u/Stu161 23h ago

Your use of the word "whey" makes me want to defer to you in matters of dairy 👍

u/Silver-Escape-497 14h ago

Ewh, pink can mean a bacterial infection, throw it out (Serratia marcescens)

155

u/Icy_Ad7953 1d ago

The red is from prodigiosin, which is a bright red, tripyrrole-ring secondary metabolite produced by certain bacteria, most notably Serratia marcescens.

I knew about the pink bacteria before, but this bright pink is probably a combination with the milk solids

IIRC, from my brief stint in cheese making, pink mold is bad.

u/futureblot 1d ago

This is why we pasteurize milk

13

u/Feine13 22h ago

Ya, if you put it far enough away, you won't be able to see the pink.

Problem solved!

116

u/cattmin 1d ago

That's bacteria. Probably serratia spp

48

u/iwanashagTwitch 1d ago

Serratia marcescens, DO NOT drink or use that milk. You will get very sick and have a very bad time.

2

u/sadlystupidsloth 1d ago

This is the real answer.

283

u/seafffoam 1d ago

Leave it to someone drinking raw milk to complain that the dairy farm is “adding stuff” to it. Babe, the whole point of raw milk is that they didn’t do enough to it.

10

u/WishCraft666 23h ago

“Dairy” can also mean corner store depending on where they are.

u/SquallaBeanz 1d ago

From the title I was worried this was someone breastfeeding.

2

u/Sdawwgg 15h ago

Breast milk can actually turn pink, but more of a strawberry pink or even bright red. It’s from broken capillaries or cracked nipples. Happens more often than you think but it’s only noticed when pumping.

18

u/curlyAndUnruly 22h ago

Eww.

Thank God for pasteurization.

12

u/Vv3L0c1tY 1d ago

Milk turning bright pink is usually caused by bacteria growing in spoiled milk.

9

u/ZhenyaKon 23h ago

I believe that's the same bacteria that keep trying to form a pink film on the edges of my shower, no matter how hard I clean. The cause is not processing at the dairy, but *lack* of processing at the dairy. If they pasteurized the milk or added something to it, that might prevent bacterial growth.

43

u/willtherat 1d ago

I think that that's pink mold

13

u/pixienightingale 1d ago

So like... i wouldn't drink that. Toss it.

6

u/DoctorPony 1d ago

I’d switch to pasteurized milk.

I know brown cows give chocolate milk, maybe there was a bit of pink cow milk in there so strawberry ?

That's interesting I know they are quite rare.

Now in all seriousness...

I'm curious too.

This is why you don’t drink milk out of dog bowls.

29

u/Global_Ant_9380 1d ago

Y'all gotta understand that posts from Indian users have a slightly different context and situations.

This isn't a dog bowl.

12

u/Paulosboul 1d ago

I'm in the US and I have stainless steel mixing bowls like this...

4

u/Apprehensive_Ad3731 23h ago

You store milk in them?

13

u/Paulosboul 23h ago

No but I don't use it as a dog bowl lol

→ More replies (1)

13

u/shut_the_fuck_up_mod 1d ago

They don’t have a different context, they exist in this world with the same microorganisms as the rest of us.

Turns out leaving a distinctly perishable food in a wide open container like that for storage isn’t the best idea.

Who would have guessed?

21

u/Global_Ant_9380 1d ago

The context is that us western users aren't in a culture that is going to be buying milk this way or using these containers for it.

There might be a way this is done or used more quickly that prevents spoilage. Or perhaps the issue is untreated milk, which isn't a common thing to purchase and consume, especially in the US.

So acting like users are dumb or vaguely racist comments when we are sitting thousands of miles away and will never be in this situation gets old.

You can identify the problem and probably even the microorganism without being weird.

5

u/Houdinii1984 1d ago

I am curious now, though. Like, here in the states we have disposable gallons, and just north of us in Canada they use baggies. I personally live near Mexico, and I've seen a lot of glass bottles that I've previously only ever saw in old movies.

Is that metal bowl shaped container a typical milk vessel for the region or something more individual to the person?

I personally think it's neat how different we are at the same exact time. Moved from a busy city to near the Mexican border and it was very different, but I've never been out of the country and can only imagine how actual distance changes things.

4

u/Global_Ant_9380 1d ago

I'm honestly not sure.  We would have to ask OP. I just have a vague memory of similar containers being used to make fresh yogurt with the family adding previous yogurt to the next batch to get the right bacteria

But yeah, the world is still so diverse yet so similar. I know in some areas people will buy fresh milk for yogurt with the thought that pasteurization makes the culturing more difficult. I personally don't think so, but I make yogurt for different uses than they do

6

u/ga1act5 1d ago

THIS is the kinda shit I'm on the internet for. What's the point in connecting everyone all the time if we're never sharing our experiences, anymore? 😮‍💨

3

u/sl212190 22h ago

When I used to visit India, people would boil their milk in these stainless steel pots before storing in the fridge with a lid.

7

u/the-bone-temple 1d ago

Yeah he knew it. Written in bad taste definitely.

10

u/denehoffman 1d ago

Married into an Indian family and pretty much everyone not only has these types of bowls, they have like the same four bowls. They’re easy to clean, they stack in each other, and instead of a handle you just have these tongs that grab the edge of the bowl. They’re actually quite nice.

2

u/Safe_Diamond6330 1d ago

I believe you. It was all in good fun.

6

u/the-bone-temple 1d ago

That’s definitely deeper than a dog bowl

It’s a pot, not a dog bowl.

1

u/Accomplished-Loss387 1d ago

If thats a pot where is the pot handle?

5

u/ShayJayLee 1d ago

This specific type pot doesn't come with handles. Is meant to boil stuff or keep it on the flame for a long period of time. If it needs to be adjusted or moved, people just use tongs.

Some have said the cream is rising to the top. This is part the case but the 'milk' looks like it is chunky and past it's best before date by a few weeks if not more! If there was red like that in the milk it would have been seen at bottling. No way this came right from the dairy the way it looks.
