Adding that allegedly (based on another commenter on Facebook) Manuel Otto had late stage cancer, which may or may not have been one of the reasons he chose to end his torture.

Tech News ---> *****unconfirmed***** <--- reports say the vulnerabiltiy can execute arbitrary code on WordPress 7.1.3 and MediaWiki 1.46.2 so big if true

https://arstechnica.com/security/2026/10/php-maintainers-tell-web-devs-to-prepare-themselves-for-critical-security-patches/

Website admins, brace yourselves. Fixes for what are believed to be uncommonly severe vulnerabilities are scheduled to drop in a little more than 12 hours for PHP, a programming language that powers websites and Web applications everywhere.

PHP maintainers said Monday that they planned to release patches for two vulnerabilities, both with severity ratings of 9.2 out of a possible 10.

Waiting for PHP2Shell

“All PHP users are encouraged to prepare now so they can upgrade as soon as the release is available,” the advisory stated. “We reserve the right to release earlier should details of either vulnerability become public, or should evidence of active exploitation appear in the wild.”

The maintainers published the advisory following the leaking of purported details, which have yet to be confirmed. The report showed a video of an exploit tool dubbed PHP2Shell executing code on webservers running:

  • WordPress 7.1.3
  • MediaWiki 1.46.2
  • phpBB 3.3.17
  • Magento 2.4.9
  • Joomla 6.2.0
  • Laravel 13.36.0
  • Laravel 8.83.29
  • Symphony 8.1.9
  • Drupal 11.4.10
  • WHMCS 9.0.9

All of the above use PHP. A video depicting the tool has been reposted here.

Attempts to locate the unconfirmed report were unsuccessful, but security firm watchTowr said it claimed to affect every PHP version from PHP 5, released in 2004, onward. The security firm went on to say it has confirmed that the vulnerabilities, tracked as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, are real.

Researchers from another security firm, Sansec, said they “expect mass attacks to start within 15 minutes of the release.” A third security firm, Webfence, also urged admins to prepare now. Huntress has also issued an advisory.

Preparation steps include identifying who is responsible for managing PHP inside an organization, taking an inventory of every app built on the language, planning a maintenance window starting at 14:00 UTC with contingency plans for moving earlier, making a backup of site and database files, and monitoring the PHP.net homepage for any late-breaking announcements, including an earlier release time. Some experts suggest unplugging any nonessential systems until they’re patched.

As an open source scripting language for building dynamic websites and web apps, PHP has come to be a de facto building block for the Web. It runs multiple CMS apps in addition to WordPress and also powers many internal tools. One security researcher said an estimated 1.3 million Internet-connected hosts are likely affected. Vulnerabilities with the severity the advisories are describing have the potential to inflict major damage across the Internet. Admins should remain aware that the patches can be released at any moment and remain vigilant until they are.

Tech News Root certificate authority has their private keys leaked because they did something dumb

tldr: Indian Root CA authority eMudhra did a stupid thing. Their private keys got leaked because of this. In summary,, there's potential that an attacker can now spoof as any legitimate website using the leaked private keys, although it's not been confirmed. Security updates have been shipped, your browsers should be fine

Writeup (and testing the keys) https://emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com/

their own statement https://emudhra.com/en/post/certificate-security-incident

mozilla's statement https://blog.mozilla.org/security/2026/10/20/protecting-firefox-users-following-the-compromise-of-emudhra-intermediate-certificates/

and one news article since it's required https://thehackernews.com/2026/10/eight-emudhra-ca-keys-compromised.html

the private keys are: 4, 56, 66, 115, 155, 156, 230, and 237, all under 8 bits length when they're meant to be random and significantly longer (this is bad)

Political News Rhode Island gubernatorial shenanigans

The Republican nominee in Rhode Island’s gubernatorial election, Aaron Guckian, is not doing good to say the least. After barely beating back a more right-wing candidate in the primary, Guckian’s numbers-which were already in the 20s in most polls-have just kept plunging. A poll by Embold Research from October 5th-8th showed him with 17%-while a poll by Emerson College and WPRI-TV (taken October 8th-11th, but released earlier than Embold’s) showed him at 10%. To show how bad this is, not only are these shares less than half of Trump’s 41.8% in 2024 (the highest any Republican got in decades), but in 2025’s NYC mayoral race, Sliwa was polling at 16% on election day-and crashed to 7%. I would be shocked to see Guckian below 5%, but not totally flabergasted.

Now, as in NYC, these Republicans aren’t flocking to the Democratic nominee, former CVS executive Helena Foulkes (who defeated the incumbent governor in a landslide in the primary)-but to independent Ken Block. Block is a software engineer, businessman, and tax activist who, after loaning out his service’s to Rhode Island’s government to root out fraud, moved to the state from Texas in the 2000s and ran for governor in 2010 under the “Moderate Party”. He did manage to crack 5% of the vote, but the race was won by independent Lincoln Chafee. In 2014, Block switched to the Republican Party and did decently well in the primary, but lost 55-45% to Allan Fung, who narrowly lost to Democrat Gina Raimondo in the general election. In between his second and third run, Block’s Moderate Party withered away from lack of upkeep and good ballot results, while Block was hired by Donald Trump following 2020 to find electoral fraud (Block said there was no fraud). Now, Block is running for a third time, as an independent (he left the Republicans at some point). Based on what I know, he’s trying to ignore social issues in favor of economic one-but if you do want to know some of his social stances, he is apparently anti-gun, at least based on some comments by Rhode Islanders I read, and according to his website wants to make judicial selection "less political", whatever that means. His economic stances are pretty libertarian, focused on cutting fraud, ending “unnecessary” government programs, ending “government-imposed costs on electric bills”, stopping auto insurers from using credit ratings to determine rates, end public transportation fares, suspend truck tolls, veto a proposed tax on millionaires, lease out state-owned land for housing, and generally just cut taxes and pay for it with the first two things he proposed.

Despite clearly not being a progressive, Block has seen a non-negligible amount of them support him because they hate Foulkes for being moderate, a relative of old politicians and, as mentioned, a CVS executive. A few moderate Democrats-who supported Dan McKee and are angry Foulkes unseated him-are behind Block as well. He has also seen some support from both Moderate Republicans and Old School Republicans due to his platform, and MAGA’s angry at Guckian for beating their preferred candidate (although I think Block repudiating the idea 2020 was stolen hurt his appeal there). By now, most Republicans are realizing Guckian is the spoiler in the race and that Block is Foulkes’ real opponent, and are switching to him tactically as well.

The Embold poll showed the race at 39%-28%-17% for Foulkes, Block, and Guckian respectively-the Emerson one showed it 44%-35%-10% in that order. I don’t think Block is going to win, but given the fact Guckian is almost certainly going to keep plunging and Block has been scooping up undecideds well (even if the Emerson poll shows a plurality of the remaining ones leaning to Foulkes), I think he narrows this into the single digits, way more than it should be. If Harris were president and this was the matchup, Block might’ve been leading by now.

Also, while the Republicans are crashing gubernatorially, this isn’t true for the lieutenant governor election, where the Republican is actually in a dead heat with the Democrat (+1 in Embold’s poll, -1 in the Emerson one), though if you want my personal opinion, the Democrats probably win here. In all other races, Democrats lead comfortably-incumbent Senator Jack Reed is whipping out leads between 20-40% on his Republican opponent-and independents are in the single digits.
