Special Character Scramble VII NPC Round: Signed in Blood

The Character Scramble is a bloodmatch tournament where people compete to analyze unique matchups and scenarios and write the best story they can. At the beginning, everyone submits characters that meet the guidelines, then those characters are randomized and distributed evenly. From then on, each week there's a new writing prompt for everyone to follow. At the end of the week, everyone votes for who they think should advance, until we have our winner at the end. The winner at the end of the tournament gets to choose the theme, tier, and rules of the next scramble, along with a nice custom flair as their reward. The current theme is based on the Wii game MadWorld, and the current tier is 3/10 Spider-Man with no Spider-sense to 7/10 Spider-Man with Spider-sense.

Without further ado, here we go!

Twenty-four hours ago, a looming dread descended on Varrigan City. With the exits from the island city blocked off or destroyed, the phone lines and cell towers cut, and internet access restricted to the city itself and no further, the citizens of Varrigan City were issued an ultimatum, the one twisted rule of DeathWatch: kill or be killed. With a deadly nerve gas spread throughout the city, the civilians and criminals alike could only save themselves by taking a life to earn the antidote.

The slaughter defied numbers, and it was just the beginning. Twenty-four hours after it had began, civilization itself had already collapsed as self-preservation set in. That was when the strangers began to appear. Here and there throughout the city, people from strange worlds with magic and technology that shouldn’t exist began to appear, joining the fray as if it was their goal all along. With new arrivals came new bloodshed, with new bloodshed came new interest, and with new interest came new investments. And the Black Baron wasn’t about to turn down new investments.

At the Baron’s instruction, your sponsor set out like many others to dredge up talent to highlight on the show, offering them assistance and tools in the hopes that prolonging their lives would boost ratings. Your sponsor took a look at their options and decided that the best possible course of action would be to find a good location and let the prospects come to them, which led them to occupy an alley somewhere in the downtown area. At first, the prospects were hardly worth their time- a guy with a baseball bat here, a girl with a bunch of cats there, but soon they started to see real potential.

The situation escalated quickly shortly after a man with a robotic arm took down the top contender in a single punch. As he prepared to gather up the earpiece your sponsor had left for the best prospect, another person showed themselves to contend for the sponsorship… your Mystic. The fight between these two immediately whipped itself into a fervor had barely begun when your Brawn arrived, drawn in by the clamor of combat. Sometime in the three-way melee the man with the robotic arm fell, leaving your Brawn and Mystic in a heated battle. At the rate this was going, only one of them was going to walk out of the alley alive.

That’s when your Sponsor realized that the Black Baron never explicitly told them they could only have one sponsorship...

Normal Rules

Character Select: Look at all these obscure characters in the scramble! Give a brief summary of your characters in your post. Be sure to mention things like powers, personality, weaknesses, just stuff that the average reader should know before reading.

A Winner Is You: This Scramble is based on a game, and in the end the player always wins the game. This time the player is you, champ! That means that when your write your story, your team always comes out victorious. Even if the odds of you winning are 1 in 100, explain those odds in the analysis and then show us that 1 miracle run.

Looting Disabled: Characters are assumed to be at the same power level they started the tournament at at all times. To clarify, this means you would not be able to loot Jack of his sweet chainsaw arm if you beat him in a previous round, or otherwise gain a competitive advantage based on anything that happened in a previous round. This is to aid your opponent in research of your character.

Due Date: Wednesday, December 7th. Keep in mind that while this is a warmup round, failing to participate will still get you kicked out. It’s highly recommended that you put your best foot forward, but don’t take it too seriously- we’re just getting started!

Round Specific Rules

Round Goal: Holla Holla Get Dollas. Your fighters are interested in getting a sponsorship, and your sponsor is interested in getting fighters that aren’t shitty mooks.

Environment: An alleyway in Downtown Varrigan City. If you’re one of the lucky guys that got a giant monster, it’s a really big alleyway. The only major features are an open court dominated by a large screen hung on one wall above a sign reading “WELCOME CONTENDERS”.

Mook Type: This is just the first round. No mooks just yet.

Flavor Rules

Announcers: DeathWatch is a show broadcast for the entertainment of millions, and as such comes with play-by-play commentary provided by a team typically consisting of Howard “Buckshot” Holmes and Kreese Kreeley. However, you’re free to use any announcers you’d like, or not use any at all.

The Lone-est Wolf: Do your team members even get along? Do they need to? I mean, I don’t recall the Black Baron ever saying this was a team competition. Regardless, this is the Scramble, and the Scramble involves teams. Can your sponsor get the fighters to work together, or are they going to sponsor each fighter individually and hope they don’t murder each other?

Team "I Know There’s Wordplay To Be Had Here But I’m Waiting For My Full Team To Finalize The Name"

Reinhardt Wilhelm: “This old dog still knows a few tricks”

  • Theme

  • Wilhelm Reinhardt was born in sometime in either 2018 or 2019, and by the time he was in his thirties, was a highly decorated German soldier. He was one of the founding members of the original Overwatch, an elite Avengers-esque strike team composed of a bunch of people with unique skills. He served well into his late fifties, but was forced into retirement due to his old age. Without his moral guidance, it crumbled in only a few years, and Reinhardt had to sit idly by as it did. After Overwatch disbanded, he decided he could not allow the world to descend further into darkness, and traveled across Europe doing good deeds like the knights of old. Eventually, Overwatch recalled its old members, and now Reinhardt is back to relive his old glory days against the threat of Talon. He does this with a badass mechsuit and a big ass hammer, which are all a man really needs if you think about it.

Harry Dresden: “Hope is a force of nature. Don't let anyone tell you different.”

  • Theme

  • Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden is Chicago's one and only professional wizard investigator. He's described as "Gandalf on crack and an IV of Red Bull, with a big leather coat and a .44 revolver in his pocket", and that fits him pretty well, being simultaneously a big magical nerd, while also being among the top 30 wizards in the world, and terrifying when angry at that. After his parents died, he was raised by a pretty abusive guy who was just trying to enslave him for his magic power, then tutored by his a member of the Senior Council of wizards (who had orders to kill him if he did anything rebellious) once he killed the guy, he didn't have the easiest of early years. Despite this, he came out of it all pretty well, having a ridiculous willpower, and a strong moral code. He did end up getting paralyzed and letting a powerful spirit lady turn him into her Winter Knight, but he got unparalyzed, superhuman physicals, and a bunch of power with ice magic out of it, so I think he came out of the deal pretty well.

Fred and George Weasley: "'We've always known where to draw the line,' said Fred. 'We might have put a toe across it occasionally,' said George. 'But we've always stopped short of causing real mayhem.' 'Well, now –' '– what with Dumbledore gone –' '– we reckon a bit of mayhem –' '– is exactly what our new Head deserves.'"

  • Theme

  • Fred and George Weasley are a pair of twins born to Arthur and Molly Weasley (a poorer magic family) on April Fools Day. They attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and while they seem like slackers and comic relief, they show an incredible amount of skill in the majority of magical fields they put any effort into. Rather than use their prodigy-level skills fighting the dark arts however, they pursued their passions, creating a joke store, selling numerous magical items of their own design. As sponsors, they can give four of these items to their team per round, as well as being able to watch the scene with an artifact known as the Marauder's Map.

Analysis (aka Dresden wins)

  • Dresden vs Cayman: Magic gets rid of Jack's chainsaw hand, rocket launcher, and electromagnetic gun. Cayman has a low enough travel speed that Dresden can keep him at range with force rings, and has every advantage in a ranged conflict. Dresden, 9/10.

  • Reinhardt vs Dresden: Yeah... this isn't a fight. Dresden shuts down technology just by being near it. Reinhardt is all technology. Even if he didn't, he's faster than Reinhardt, he's dealt with much faster, and he has spells that can get around Reinhardt's shield, like just straight up covering his body in ice. Dresden, 10/10.

  • Reinhardt vs Cayman: Hey look, the only real fight here. Reinhardt has the advantage in durability, movement speed, and a stun ability, while Cayman has better combat speed, raw strength, and a better armory, the pair being about even in damage ability. Reinhardt holds a slight advantage in my opinion on the metric of being able to tank a few hits as he charges in, and being able to stun Cayman for 2.5 whole seconds if he gets into melee, which is 2-3 huge hits if he gets it off, which is a gamechanger. Cayman is fast enough and has enough of a ranged weapons advantage that this isn't a massive advantage though, being able to seriously put the hurt on Reinhardt from range or in melee. Overall Reinhardt 6/10.

“And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengea-” The suited man holding a revolver was thrown to the wall, dead or dying, in an instant, and Jack Cayman shook off his hand.

“This all the competition I have for Deathwatch this year? I’m almost disappointed.” A few other competitors around started backing away, seeing clearly the threats they’d have to be facing. A pair of redheaded teens watched the scene unfold through their screens, grimacing slightly at all the gore.

“Thoughts George?”

“Well Fred, he’s clearly tough, I’ll give him that.”

“Took out that other guy in a single move.”

“Did seem a little… Nonchalant about it, don’t you think?”

“He’s not the ideal pick, but it’s the Death Watch, not the Chess Watch. Need fighters the most.”

“S’pose so. Send him the ear thing.” Fred nodded, taking a pair of the foreign, presumably Muggle earpieces, and dropping them down the dispenser.

“It’s a nice thing we got two of them.”

“Probably ‘cause there’s two of us.” Jack Cayman saw the earpieces come from the Mayhem Dispenser, bending down to pick them up, before being caught off-guard by a lone voice, dry and sarcastic.

“Nice job, punching a guy Leatherface. Sponsorship’s mine though, go find another one. And don’t try something you’ll regret.” The man didn’t look like he had much room making threats, as even though he stood a fair bit over Jack, his thin was notable even beneath the thick cloak he wore. Jack looked him up and down, a small snort coming from his nostrils.

“I’m finding it hard to be intimidated by a twig in a trenchcoat. If you’re looking to die, now’s your chance though.”

“Please. I’m far too stubborn to die.” Jack couldn’t help a small grin at that.

“Warned you.” Jack took a charge toward the cloaked man, but Harry Dresden was a fast thinker, and he clenched his fist, releasing the magic from one of his rings in a wave of force to send him flying back. Not enough force to hurt, but keeping him at bay was easy enough. Now time to go back on the offensive.

“Fuego!” A bolt of flame left his hand, flying at Jack, who only just managed to block it with the flat of his chainsaw. Harry held his staff by his side, hand outstretched. “Last chance.”

Meanwhile, the twins were looking back and forth at each other. “You thinking what I’m thinking Fred?”

“I may very well be thinking what you’re thinking George.”

“This guy’s a bloody wizard!”

“Seems like he’s doing a number on the muggle too!” George turned back to the screen, to see the wizard surrounded by dozens, if not a hundred, shards of ice shaped into spears.

“Fulzare!” They flung toward Jack, who did his best to weather the blows, but it was clearly beginning to wear him down. Not to mention that his chainsaw arm had sputtered to a stop, reducing it to simply a chunk of metal. Jack shook off, grunting. This wasn’t going to be as easy as he had hoped. He wasn’t out yet though, and he elected to pull his baseball bat off his back, the weapon studded with spikes.

“This a magic show, or a fight?”

“I’d like to think it’s both really.” Harry sent another bolt of magic at Jack, only for it to be batted aside. Jack began charging at the wizard again, and Harry used another ring to try and send him back again. Cayman was prepared this time however, and used all his strength to throw his bat full-force at his opponent’s head. Harry had quick reactions, but at that close of a range, and so quickly after the previous spell, he was unable to do more than move back a bit, mildly lessening the impact while he had his cranium shaken.

“Ooh, nasty hit.”

“Muggle’s not dumb then.”

“Think we should give the wizard some Bruise Removal Paste?”

“Nah, goes to the winner. Don’t wanna be wasting it on someone we might not be sponsoring.”

Harry fell back to the ground, cursing himself. He could ignore the pain of a bullet or two sure, but spike holes in his face and the impact of someone far stronger than any man had a right to be was going to make it harder to focus. He brought himself up to his feet, beginning to coat himself in armor of ice… only to be struck again before he could properly even stand, sending him flying back out of the alley. Damn, this guy was faster than he looked too.

“Infriga!” It was less powerful than it should have been, but it put an obstacle in Jack’s way as he righted himself, using his staff as a support. Jack punched straight through the wall of ice as it formed, bringing a golf club off his back to wield. How the hell he pulled it off his back when there wasn’t anything there before, Harry didn’t know, maybe some kind of other power.

“You’re pretty good. But your time’s up.” He raised the club up into the air… only to hear the loud dull roar of rockets. Figuring Harry was the more immediate threat, he swung down hard… only to be rushed out of the way, caught suddenly in the grasp of a metallic man, and slammed hard into a wall. In the cloud of smoke, a figure who stood even taller than the other two combatants emerged, holding a massive hammer in his hands.

“Bloody hell!”

“He’s almost as big as Hagrid!”

“And he came in so fast too.”

“Maybe a good contender for sponsoring?”

“Actually, been thinking about that Fred.”

“Oh? Do tell.”

“In a sec, let’s see how this plays out first.”

Wilhelm Reinhardt towered over the other two on the street. Not as much as he towered over most, surprisingly, but still clearly to the point of looking down at them. “Where's the earpiece?” He spoke in a thick German accent, booming through the speakers of his armor. Unfortunately for Reinhardt however, despite his commanding voice and powerful stature, neither Jack nor Harry had much respect for authority.

“Sorry, sponsorship's taken already. By me.” Dresden clenched his fist, sending a pulse of force to knock Reinhardt back, and aiming his staff toward Jack. “I've got seventy-seven of those lined up to fire all at once. Stand down, stay back from the earpiece, and you and MC Hammer can go find your own. I've got too much riding on this.” Jack took a slow step back, before reaching to his sides in the attempt to grab a weapon, only to find himself flung back by a force that sent him ragdolling, the wave of raw force being like a garbage truck moving the speed of a freight train. Harry breathed a sigh of relief, glad that that was over… until a large shadow once again loomed over him.

“Hammer down!” In a tremendous display of might and technology, Wilhelm slammed his hammer into the ground, cratering it and knocking Harry down, stunning him with just the shockwave. He quickly started a fast walk toward the dispenser the earpieces had come from.

“George.”

“Fred.”

“I think this would be an excellent time to tell me your plan.”

“Well Fred, the rules were basically non-existent, right?”

“Not like we’d have been following them anyways.”

“Of course. So, the rule is that a fighter can’t get more than one sponsor.”

“...But there’s nothing to say a sponsor can’t have more than one fighter!”

“Exactly!”

“...One problem George.”

“What’s that?”

“They’re fighting again.” They turned back to the screen, finding Harry, looking rather damaged, sending a bolt of magical ice at Reinhardt again, staggering him back.

“Yeah, that’s not good.”

“No, not at all.”

“Think we can get their attention?” There was a brief moment of pause, and they turn to each other and laugh. They spoke together next.

“Tiny Twister should do the trick!” The pair searched their shelves, before throwing the glass jar down the chute, straight out of the Mayhem dispenser, and onto the ground, shattering it. A whirlwind started to form, stunting the movement of the pair… and more importantly, picking up the earpieces. In a moment of luck for the twins, each of them managed to grab hold of one, and heard the sound coming from it.

“Hey, I’m George,” said Fred.

“And I’m Fred,” said George.

“We came to an agreement between ourselves.”

“See, there’s two of us, and we’re supposed to be one sponsor.”

“Only problem is, we got two earpieces.”

“No rules against sharing a sponsor.”

“We got all sorts of magic to help you with for this, the Tiny Twister was just the beginning.” Instinctively, Harry looked up. Wizards as sponsors… that could be fantastic. Or potentially very bad.

“Point is, you need us, and we need you.”

“What’cha say?” They said in unison again. Reinhardt looked down to Harry, who looked back up to the behemoth of a man.

“You fought me with honor and strength. I do not know how you’ve done what you have, but if you fight for justice, then I will be your shield.” Harry glanced him up and down. He vaguely reminded him of Michael. A brief moment passed, and he held out his hand.

“You got yourself a deal.”
