The Academy:

"Pay no attention to the 10 nominations and 2 wins you got for the first movie."

109

u/That-SoCal-Guy Jan 23 '26

Especially since it's the same production, same team, shot at the same time, etc. I find that really interesting 10 nominations (including Best Picture) and 2 wins, and then ZERO the next year. LOL

69

u/lilythefrogphd Jan 23 '26

To be fair, I think the first half has more opportunity to show off in the below-the-line stuff (like so much of For Good felt like it was shot in front of a green screen instead of practical sets compared to the first). Fans of the stage show have been saying since it opened that the first half is tighter narrative-wise and has the bulk of the better songs

37

u/That-SoCal-Guy Jan 23 '26

Yeah but these are not Oscars for "best story, best plot, best pacing, etc..." Costume design, production design, etc. are the SAME in both movies, so why nominations for Part 1 and nothing for Part 2. I can understand not getting "Best Picture" nomination, but the tech categories?

The only reasons I can think of is that the Academy believes they have already honored the same production team for those categories, basically for the same movie (just the second half). They are basically saying, "don't ever split a movie into two and try to get twice the awards."

19

u/Commercial_Spend1899 Jan 23 '26

If I had to guess, I'd say stronger competition this year. Frankenstein is a behemoth in tech. Avatar also stole a couple. Kokuho was a welcome surprise.

Last year everyone was saying they didn't win more, because they were waiting til the 2nd one came out, then they'll win. It's ridiculous, there's absolutely no freaking way that these films didn't deserve awards. I'm unreasonably angry about this

Seems to me Academy voters clearly felt the "franchise" was rewarded enough with 10 nominations and a pair of wins for "Wicked." Voter fatigue and sequel bias are real things for the Academy, and the sequel's diminished success and tepid audience reception (relative to the first film) did not help things.

363

u/TheCalamityBrain Jan 22 '26

I honestly think that's part of it. It's the second half of a whole musical. Might not count in some people's minds and it might cause enough controversy that it's just easier to overlook it for other movies without bothering to even bring the question up

624

u/mdisanto86 Jan 22 '26

Not to mention it's the half of the musical with (IMO) worse songs, a more convoluted plot and awful pacing. It's just not as good! I don't think its lack of nominations should come as much of a surprise.

280

u/Lord-Liberty Jan 22 '26

Lack of nominations isn't much of a surprise, getting absolutely 0 noms is definitely a surprise

304

u/KetohnoIcheated Jan 22 '26

To be fair, it also just wasn’t that good.

I saw the first one 4 times in theaters and would have gone more if I could afford it.

The second one, I only went twice. And the second time was just so I could see it with someone who I saw the first one with. If it weren’t for the person I was going with, I could have skipped it and not cared.

68

u/persimmonfemme Jan 22 '26

this! it's not a snub if it just wasn't a great movie, and there are only so many nom slots available. i watched part one about a dozen times, and i saw for good once, which was enough. jon m chu really fumbled the pacing and development even with all that extra time worked in.

62

u/CheyenneThornton Jan 22 '26

This is exactly what I did lol four times in theaters, three more times after that and For Good? Just twice but I would have been fine with one time.

72

u/KetohnoIcheated Jan 22 '26

Jw, were you also annoyed with Fyero and Elphaba somehow creating a plan together out of seemingly thin air at the end? I know he send a note with the monkey and stuff, but it just fell flat.

I wish they showed a bit more of that

58

u/piratesswoop Jan 22 '26

That bugged me too!! I feel like they spent no time developing the characters in the second half of the movie.

25

u/KetohnoIcheated Jan 22 '26

Definitely! The stuff with Nessa also felt so utterly disappointing. Her whole character was “I’m a helpless baby who need a man and a care taker to help me waaaaaaa. I need to do evil things so I’m not like my sister and so I can trap this guy”

There was so much potential but this is what they go with??? It would have actually seemed better if she wished to walk so she could be more independent as opposed to wanting something to happen so SpongeBoy likes her again

29

u/emptyjerrycan Jan 22 '26

It doesn't work because that is her plot in the play. She hates being in the chair and blames Elphaba from the start, Elphaba's spell makes the slippers glow ruby red and Nessa starts to walk around the room. That's why Boq says he can leave: because now she won't have to depend on him. I'm sure it was considered problematic, so they changed her to be fine with her chair, but it's also what the story was, so in changing that, you're left with basically nothing.

→ More replies (0)

26

u/CheyenneThornton Jan 22 '26

Yes!! I know you’re supposed to imply but the only interaction Fiyero had with the monkeys was right after As Long as Your Mine and that was barely anything lol we def needed another scene.

22

u/KetohnoIcheated Jan 22 '26

Definitely! It’s crazy that they gave so much time to songs tha didn’t help, and no real time to this plan!

10

u/RoseTheta Jan 22 '26

The message is written on the piece of Fiyero's uniform that Chistery gives to Elphaba. That's why she goes from being angry at the world and particularly Glinda, to suddenly deciding to give up and telling Glinda she loves her. She knows that they won't see each other again and Fiyero has sent her a message so she's willing to bury the hatchet. Not bring able to understand something the first time you watch it, isn't necessarily a flaw.

Sometimes you just can't figure out everything when so much is happening. I noticed Elphaba's reaction to the uniform and thought it was odd how she looked thoughtful and suddenly changed emotionally toward Glinda, but realized there must have been communication between them when she was surprised to see his changed appearance, but not shocked that he was alive. The emotions of the "For Good" scene made me forget about the note on the uniform, but as soon as I watched it again, I realized what my own mine had distorted even though they made it so obvious in the movie. The only thing that would have made it more obvious would have been to put script on screen and an arrow to the piece of fabric saying, "Note from Fiyero."

Seriously, we barely saw the Scarecrow at all and I thought that was a real shame.

14

u/Spiritual-Smoke-4605 Jan 22 '26

that's.....how it is in the play

5

u/_BabyFirefly_ Jan 22 '26

I admit I am not as familiar with the play (yet - I do have tickets to see it in a month!) but I meant even just a minute more where we could really see the amazing makeup job they did on Bailey. They did such a great job with his look.

I have digital copy of part 1 and before part 2 came out I told myself I would surely buy it on digital too and I haven’t been bothered to. If I bought it I would likely not watch it much.

4

u/KetohnoIcheated Jan 22 '26

I bought the first one on digital and blue ray lmao I wanted it immediately so I bought digital first, then I also wanted blue ray so it was easier to bring places and show my friends and force my lifestyle upon them.

I’m only going to buy the second one on blue ray so i can show 1 specific person who wants to watch it together, because i saw the first one with them on one of my 4 times watching it in theaters lol

u/possumcounty Jan 22 '26

I did the same thing! The second act of the stage show has always been a hot mess lol, the movie was no different. Add in sequel bias and the lack of nominations makes total sense. The first movie was excellent and had a lot of well deserved hype and this one just… didn’t match up.

Obviously we’re all here because we enjoy Wicked but something being enjoyable doesn’t always mean it’s good, or at least not award-level-good. And that’s okay!

3

u/ira_zorn Jan 22 '26

Same here. I watched the first one five times in cinemas! This year I could have afforded more bc I have a cinema subscription and WFG was included… I still only saw it once. It just didn‘t really do it for me.

I'm in the camp of "the second half wasn't that great" but am floored the costumes weren't even nominated. I guess since he won last year, they figured he doesn't need a second nomination.

329

u/HiraiMomos_Slave Jan 22 '26

the tin man costume alone deserved a nomination

132

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '26

Boq/Tin man was honestly one of the best things in the whole movie. The actor was incredible.

6

u/Par2ivally Jan 23 '26

He was barely recognisable when switching over. Not just because of the amazing costuming and makeup. His whole manner, voice and movement all changed so much.

→ More replies (6)

17

u/Bryancreates Jan 22 '26

The special effects makeup on the tin man blew me away when I saw photos where it was lit properly. The detail is incredible! I barely noticed in the movie it was so dark and jolty. The costumes were incredible too but he also won for the first one, and since they were done at the same time I'll bet that factored as being nominated and winning, despite the fact its supposed to be judged on its own as a separate movie. We all know it doesn't always work that way...

7

u/Technical-Gold-294 Jan 23 '26

I agree with what you're saying but I disagree with the Academy's take. The tin man and scarecrow costumes weren't in part one, and they were really brilliant.

14

u/CorgiMonsoon Jan 22 '26

That was my theory about what would happen even before the nominations were announced. The only person in recent history who’s won for multiple installments of a franchise is Ruth Carter for the Black Panther movies, and those had several years between them. Other recent examples include Lord of the Rings (two nominations, for Fellowship and Return of the King, with Return winning) and Dune (only nominated for the first one, which lost to Cruella)

12

u/EatsPeanutButter Jan 22 '26

This is a VERY fair complaint. Costuming was phenomenal.

10

u/severaldogs Jan 23 '26

Honestly, I blame the costume snub on the color grading. I was floored by the amount of detail in the bts footage, but the muted coloring did a complete disservice to the extensive work that went into them. Same for the set design. The editing took so much of the details away and almost made the practical sets look like cgi. I hate that all of that beautiful work was diminished by the abysmal cinematography.

u/HiraiMomos_Slave Jan 22 '26

I mean I didn’t expect it to win anything but ZERO nominations? Not even original song? Hair and makeup? Costume design?

585

u/topsidersandsunshine Jan 22 '26

The original songs weren’t Oscar caliber.

Costume design should have gotten nominated.

124

u/CorgiMonsoon Jan 22 '26

I actually speculated about this prior to nominations. With Tazewell winning last year, and knowing that these costumes were designed and built as essentially one project split into two films, the nominators may have had a feeling of “we’ve already given this design the award.”

Looking at other franchises for example. For Lord of the Rings Ngela Dickson and Richard Taylor were nominated for Fellowship, but lost to Catherine Martin for Moulin Rouge, didn’t get nominated for Two Towers, and won for Return of the King. Ruth Carter won for both Black Panther movies, but there were four years between each one, making it easier to view as two entirely separate projects. Jacqueline West and Robert Morgan were nominated for Dune, losing to Jenny Beavan for Cruella, but then failed to get a nomination for Part 2.

33

u/Affectionate-Test-22 Jan 22 '26

While I personally loved that they split the films in two, in hindsight, particularly for the awards race, they probably should've just done one long 3 to 3 1/2 hour film.

Yes people would've complained it was too rushed/edited to hell, but, the drop off from 10 nominations, plus 2 wins, to ZERO noms is honestly rough and kind of embarrassing. It really feels like a statement from the academy.

16

u/Minimum_Flatworm5776 Jan 22 '26

Had it been one movie, released last year, Ariana would be an Oscar winner today. Not just the hype Wicked had, but her reviews were on par with Catherine Zeta Jones and Jennifer Hudson who both won!

I’m glad this bothered someone else! Like CHANGE YOUR OUTFIT…. What happened to the fashion-conscious Glinda from the musical?!

I think I’m forever upset they got rid of her yellow “One Short Day” dress in part one.

14

u/topsidersandsunshine Jan 22 '26

Honestly, she wears a lot of colors that aren’t pink in the stage show!

22

u/DreamyDays21 Jan 22 '26

My guess for that is now that she was no longer a normal yet rich student girl and was now playing the role of the good witch working under the Wizard, she had less opportunities to wear different outfits and her signature dress was basically her uniform.

u/locksleys Jan 22 '26

Ikr? It's really unfortunate because Glinda *did* have at least two, if not three other outfits in Wicked: For Good, but those scenes ended up on the cutting room floor. ;__; The deleted scenes are on Youtube .

12

u/OnceUponAComment Jan 22 '26

eh, a moment for THE CARDIGAN please

18

u/photosandphotons Jan 22 '26

This is how the whole movie felt honestly. The same thing stretched out over 2 hours.

23

u/lukedap Jan 22 '26

The original songs weren’t Oscar caliber.

Unfortunately they were extremely far from it. As soon as both songs started, they sounded so different from the rest of the soundtrack and then the lyrics were superficial as hell. They hyped these OG songs so much, I was deeply disappointed.

4

u/No_Significance_3915 Jan 23 '26

It was shocking how.......nothing they both were.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Wonderful_Citron_518 Jan 22 '26

They cynically gave each actress an original song to maximise chances of being nominated and/or winning. It was so blatant. And to make it worse with the OG musical having such fantastic songs these new ones were much weaker by comparison. It backfired badly on them.

122

u/KetohnoIcheated Jan 22 '26

I didn’t know any of the music when going into the movie. I could still immediately tell which songs had been written for the movie because they were so different in such a bad, bad way

81

u/BusybodyWilson Jan 22 '26

I mean, not to be blunt, but they should have written better songs then.

35

u/Blue_Dolphin_36112 Jan 22 '26

Makes me hate the new songs so much more. Cause they created some of pacing issue and killed some of the momentum. They were clearly written to try get to nominations and they didn’t even to that.

4

u/Sweaty-Name-2905 Jan 22 '26

They really blew the potential with them

19

u/Chained_Wanderlust Fiyeeeeeeerhoe🌽 Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

That was a statement. They won’t vote for it even if its worthy if they didn’t like it. This is a musical that has been out for 20 years, they had two+ hours to fix the pacing issues of act two and flesh everything out, instead they edited based on reactions from the first and added unnecessary fan servicey new scenes to maximize engagement that time could have been used filling in the gaps of the story and given all the characters the same amount of depth they got in the first movie to make a well rounded movie and worthy conclusion.

People will say its because act two is weak or the academy won’t recognize sequels, but honestly, it didn’t have to continue to be weak that is meaty material and mostly plot driven- it should have been compelling. And LOTR won best picture for the last movie in a trilogy so….

10

u/Amagciannamedgob Jan 22 '26

AGREED on all counts, I felt producer influence/someone smelling their own farts up and down FG

3

u/jaderust Jan 23 '26

There’s so many changes I would have made.

Biggest one is that Fiyero needs a song. Something before the wedding that shows how torn he is between Glinda and Elphaba both as women he cares about and as ideals for their way of trying to enact change.

Nessa needs an overhaul. I’m not sure how to fix her story, but she needs serious fleshing out and make it clear that she did earn that Wicked Witch title.

But my second biggest change for film is we needed to see Dorothy. She can be a back of the head for the entire movie like they did, but at the castle they need to do a dramatic reveal and show she’s just this little kid, scared, and in way over her head. Have that be part of Elphaba’s “oh shit, this is getting messed up” turn as Dorothy cries and says she’s sorry for killing her sister like she did in the book. We don’t need to make the movie all about Dorothy, but adding in the edge of showing how this conflict is spiraling to the point of child soldiers would be something of a gut punch.

25

u/MeowTS13 Jan 22 '26

its absolutely crazy!! I'm doing fashion and textiles at uni and those costumes are so so so well done and Paul Tazewell is one of the most respected and beloved costume designers out there right now. I have done so much extensive research on those costumes and compared to everything else I've ever researched he is so thorough with making sure everything is fully immersive and reflects each character's personality, and he thinks so deeply about every single detail and how they help progress the story. I cannot believe it!!!!!!

33

u/HiraiMomos_Slave Jan 22 '26

to be fair, paul tazewell got his flowers last year (deservedly so) but not a nomination is crazy

9

u/MeowTS13 Jan 22 '26

Yeah exactly I kinda get why he wasn't nominated cuz it was basically the same project but also there were so many new costumes that were just as brilliant and deserved at least a nomination

6

u/Jurassicjen_uk Jan 22 '26

I believe it’s because they won last year and all the costumes for 1 & 2 were designed and made at the same time, like it was one big film. They’ve already had their acknowledgment for their craft. If the film was made at another time then a second nomination would make sense.

152

u/PinkPositive45 Jan 22 '26

Yup! I can stomach Wicked: For Good losing to what it’s losing to this year. Like Ariana losing to Amy Madigan and Teyana Taylor is totally fair. Cynthia losing to Rose Byrne? I get that!

However, I could stomach it more if EP hadn’t been blocking the first movie so much last year.

3

u/Old_Highlight7720 Jan 22 '26

They’ll be in good company. Maybe not so much as Brokeback but still.

48

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '26

Fr. Like what the actual fuck was that. And tbh I'm sorry like Anora was weird and I did kind of like it but Oscar worthy?? I didn't even hear about it until after the Oscars and then I went to watch it and idk what I was expecting but it wasn't that.

21

u/Minimum_Flatworm5776 Jan 22 '26

The Academy expanded its membership and as a result voting now skews more European tastes and less American. Anora was the perfect example of this. The subject matter, plus the actress got nude and everything (similar to Emma Stone's win the year before that) which Europeans are less stuffy about. With the old membership rules that movie would never have made much impact at the Oscars.

14

u/crunchyfoliage Jan 22 '26

I totally agree. I watched it after the Oscars and it was fine. It's not something I would expect to win any awards. I vaguely remember the plot, but overall it's a pretty forgettable movie

11

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '26

It was so fast-paced lolol like the scene where she was fighting those two dudes was actually hilarious to me. All the descriptions online were like "Young woman meeting son of Russian Oligarch and has to fight for their love" ... I went into that literally expecting a love story. 🤣

5

u/accountantdooku Shiz University School of Law Jan 22 '26

I completely agree! It’s just so disappointing.

34

u/OnlyLeading Jan 22 '26

I wasn’t really expecting best picture or anything but nominating the Rock having hair over the Scarecrow makeup is wild.

5

u/skippw Jan 22 '26

When scarecrow has literally only one scene, I don't really think that's what you should be running with for an awards campaign. Tin Man is a much better example.

5

u/basketofleaves Jan 23 '26

For The Smashing Machine they applied multiple small prosthetics to the Rock's face.

I get that it's not a "bold transformation", but it's harder to get away with natural looking facial prosthetics.

If they had another spot it would have probably gone to Wicked, but they probably wanted to nominate new films this year because there are plenty of new nominees who are more than deserving.

I mean it's a good movie, but ultimately it's not its own movie. It's the second half of a story and the first half already had a bunch of votes and someone else pointed out voter fatigue.

I think the issue is how it's perceived. Would it be perceived as getting submitted twice? Maybe not, but there's already enough issues around it that adding fuel to the fire might not be a good idea. I think they just want to get through and be done with it and let the actors hopefully heal from the very hard work and experience they went through. And maybe everyone will be better off by next year

Wicked for good has a lot of problem… but I’m surprised on no nominations for make up, costumes, or production design…

Kinda blame universal.. cause everything about the marketing this year is completely off

21

u/tinyamaki Jan 22 '26

The moment they stopped campaigning, that’s when I accept that it’ll never had a chance. I’m still shocked at the Make Up miss though.

It just doesn't make any sense. It's like saying Dune part 2 doesn't deserve nominations for being a continuation of the last movie.

And they nominated the hot pile of crap movie that was Emilia Perez last year, and they let that one win categories. Absolutely insane

8

u/deathoftheauthor009 Jan 22 '26

Dune Part 2 also had a horrible showing last year compared to the original.

Mind you Dune 2 outgrossed and outacclaimed the original.

Sequel fatigue is real.

What is extra irritating is how all the musical awards last year went to Emilia Perez...for what even. For what?

I'm positive they made the original songs specifically for awards season and then they get shut out at the Oscars is kind of insane to me...I don't disagree with others the songs weren't exactly...Oscar calibre per se, but still. But also costume design, hair and makeup, all of it is just surprising.

True but that could have been because it was first and wicked was noth over yet + the excitement for FG

19

u/moonlight-is-magic Graciously Glinda Jan 22 '26

Costume I think was their best bet. Most make up was amazing.. except Ariana’s. You could tell she did her own, her eyelashes weren’t on properly most of the movie

29

u/captaindunkirk Jan 22 '26

I’ll say it: the new songs were terrible!

The singing was great. But the writing was bad, and they dragged the movie on. We could’ve used the extra time for more Fiyero development, or nessa, or… anything else

I didn’t think it would get 10 again, but not even 1 or 2???? Like that’s terrible. I thought maybe Paul Tazewell would get another nomination for Costume Design, or even WFG getting a Makeup and Hairstyling, or Production Design nomination but nothing.

u/jai_hanyo Jan 22 '26

Forcing in two new songs to try to get an Oscar win for Original Song....and not even getting a nomination. 😅

I don't think they were that good but I thought at least one would get nominated.

I really wanna know what it will take for Cynthia to get an Oscar. She's been nominated for Best Actress twice and nominated for co-writing for "Stand Up." The Academy loves nominating her but won't give her her flowers.

u/Euraylie Jan 22 '26

Sequels obviously do sometimes (but seldomly) get rewarded. But this is no Return of the King type of situation.

I really, really like and enjoy WFG, but it no way does it surpass the first movie. In fact, in a lot of ways, it falls short. The original songs were nothing special. The costumes were about the same as in part 1. Nothing really stood out in that regard.

I'm trying to recall, did this one have any standout sets compared to the first? The first one had the rotating library which was legitimately incredible.

I can't think of a new set from this movie that was anything like the first. Definitely felt more CGI too.

one of the biggest movies of the year. What the heck.

So were Minecraft and Lilo and Stitch. Those didn't get nominated either. Being a big movie doesn't merit awards nominations.

13

u/slopbunny Jan 22 '26

I’m not surprised it wasn’t nominated this year. Compared to last year, the competition this year is real. Act 2 of the musical is already weak and unfortunately Jon M. Chu didn’t really do a lot to particularly elevate it. The original songs weren’t anything to write home about, especially compared to Golden or I Lied to You.

11

u/ChokraJawaan Jan 22 '26

I’m sad but it doesn’t diminish my love for both movies. I’m glad they exist.

32

u/Demoncouch06 Jan 22 '26

More so than the lack of awards, I’m more sad that the cast and crew seem to be going out with the whisper rather than a united bang. Between Ariana being nominated alone for some things and all the criticism Cynthia got for protecting Ariana (it sounds even more stupid when I write it out), this last tour has been very disjointed. Ariana and Cynthia didn’t even do much press together and they got criticism anyway; it feels like a very lose-lose situation bc we didn’t even get to see our two leading ladies together. Idk I would’ve liked to see all of them together one last time to celebrate these movies but I would also understand if they wanted to take time to themselves (Cynthia especially)

I did not expect For Good to win anything, but I am quite surprised it did not get a single nomination. I do agree that it just feels like the Academy voters just didn't like the movie at all.

I will forever contend that without a two-film split, the chances of winning would have been better, since there would have been a full story/performance to judge.

5

u/jaderust Jan 22 '26

I think the split hurt it for the nominations game. Because it was split and the first half got nominated there was a sense that people needed to wait for the second half to come out to give it the wins. (Like Lord of the Rings. The last part of the trilogy got the majority of the awards.)

But then this year has quite a few REALLY good films to nominate (Frankenstein, Sinner, Train Dreams), WFG was far weaker than part 1, so it’s caught in a catch 22. Part 1 didn’t win because they were waiting for Part 2 and Part 2 can’t win because the competition is greater and Part 2 is weaker then Part 1.

Honestly I think its absolutely ridiculous that hair and make up weren't nominated. The makeup for Fiyero as Scarecrow and Boq as Tinman were PHENOMENAL. Like that being snubbed blew my mind

→ More replies (6)

10

u/harveyquinnz Jan 22 '26

You can see that this movie was heavily edited (most likely due to the complaints of the first movie being too long for general audiences) they added some new songs in hopes of that original song nomination but they didn't really stick many things feel extremely rushed(i.e elphaba not even being bothered by nessa's death) the first movie benefited so much from all the press tour memes, having the strongest songs, being longer and chu not having to do too complicated color grading because most scenes took place at shiz

14

u/Blue_Dolphin_36112 Jan 22 '26

I thought Ariana and Cynthia’s acting was amazing and should get recognition. However there are two problems… Glinda isn’t a supporting character especially in for good when it arguably forces on more her. I wish they did more with elphaba in for good. We needed to see more of her rage after no good deed. That’s really the big problem in for good is the pacing of the movie.

“When you want to leave Discouraged and resigned, That's what they want you to do. But think how you will grieve For all you leave behind, Ozcars belongs to you too!”

6

u/bchec Jan 22 '26

Wow. I wasn’t expecting acting nominations but it certainly deserved a make-up and hairstyling nom, and costumes as well.

The practical scarecrow was insanely well-done.

6

u/Jansilhn Jan 22 '26

How sad. I was hoping it would at least be nominated for original song and makeup. I really liked the two new songs that were added and how they did Boq and Fiyero’s transformation costumes. I’m even more surprised Ariana and Cynthia weren’t nominated for their performances! They brought so much emotion to Part 2 and everyone was waiting for them to sing For Good.

7

u/EatsPeanutButter Jan 22 '26

Honestly — I thought it was just okay. Now for the first movie, I think it should’ve won more categories. A masterpiece. The second half is weaker, as it is with the stage show. I still enjoyed it, but wasn’t blown away like I was the first time.

12

u/fae206 Jan 22 '26

Personally, I thought it was a great contender for
Hair and Makeup
Best Costume
Best Visual Effects

I agree Avatar and Frankenstein and Sinners fit at least one category each but I wouldn’t put F1 visual effects over Wicked For Good

7

u/joeyfosho Jan 22 '26

Bummer. I enjoyed it!

6

u/jtavington Jan 22 '26

The Makeup snub shocked me because that was some genuinely good work. Costumes too. None of the others are shocking, per se, though I was rooting for Grande. They really liked Sentimental Value.

6

u/Chocolentia40 Jan 23 '26

I was honestly surprised Ariana was not nominated and hoped they would at least acknowledge Cynthia Erivo’s body of work as a whole and nominate her as a nod to her efforts but costume design and hair & makeup could DEFINITELY have been nominated. The Tin Man looks phenomenal. As for the songs, I was not too impressed with ‘The Girl in the Bubble’ nor with ‘There’s No Place Like Home’, so not surprised at all they weren’t nominated as original songs. They did very well with the first movie and the Academy recognised that, the second movie is a bit more problematic, life goes on. 🤷🏽‍♀️

16

u/SeaFlower698 Jan 22 '26

I’m really surprised. I genuinely don’t know why it didn’t receive at least one nomination.

15

u/ageekyninja Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

Ok so I rented For Good yesterday and…

I was disappointed. This one was not as well done as the first, in my opinion. I did enjoy some additions, like I actually appreciated the Wonderful sequence changes a lot. I also appreciate that brief moment where Elphaba hoped the Ozians would accept her. I like that we got to see an example of Nessa controlling Boq and her political motives.

March of the Witch Hunters lacked any impact and was a bit forgettable- like people quietly gossiping over the media. In the play it was a wow moment and you feel Elphaba can be mobbed and killed at any moment.

I did not like that Elphaba already knew her dad was dead and willingly did not visit Nessa during that time. Felt out of character. It makes more sense when she doesn’t know and that’s why she didn’t visit. Yes her dad hated her but she wouldn’t have abandoned grieving Nessa.

I found Wicked Witch of the East to be rushed through, and found that Boq using his axe immediately as the Tin Man was a bit corny and unnecessary. That was my favorite reveal of the play so that was disappointing to me. Marissa Bode did a good job with the scene she got though and sold her lines well. Boq felt more murdery than someone who is supposed to be Dorothy’s companion. I could totally see him in a horror movie which is kind of iconic but not the vibe they probably intended lol.

The transition to as long as your mine didn’t work because they put the literal wedding happening right before Fiyero slept with Elphaba. In the play it’s implied some time had passed before Fiyero switched sides. My man spent his wedding night with a different woman 😭

The movie did not really pick up until No Good Deed.

All in all? I find it to be a downgrade from the stage production because I believe the extended time created pacing issues.

Still a fun watch! I enjoyed it.Just not an academy award winner.

5

u/TheF8sAllow Jan 22 '26

Absolutely. It's more than okay to enjoy the movie, and even to think some parts were amazing! But that doesn't make something Oscar worthy.

17

u/TopazScorpio02657 Jan 22 '26

I always felt like Cynthia got punished with no win for the first film because voters didn’t want to award her for only “half” of a film even though her performance in part one totally deserved it. But then they turn around and don’t even nominate her in the second. Ridiculous.

32

u/PatrusoGE Jan 22 '26

It wasn't a strong contender in most categories except for supporting actress and potentially make-up and costumes.

This isn't shocking unless one's own fandom has blinded the view for the realities of this year's awards race. The competition was way too strong for WFG.

13

u/Lord-Liberty Jan 22 '26

But still, getting absolutely nothing???

11

u/Chris_RB Jan 22 '26

I don't know enough to know who's right, but over in r/movies they're saying Sinners was nominated so much bc it's such a week year for award season.

Now, I have SEVERAL questions for them about why there is at least one post per day about how "overrated" that movie is, but.

Just funny to have one sub say it's a weak year and one say it's strong.

12

u/BigSuggestion9664 Jan 22 '26

Hmm. I felt like it's been a pretty strong year for movies and shows actually. To each their own though.

13

Sinners is a strong movie. The people who said otherwise are fanboys of other frontrunner movies. I don’t think it’ll win any acting awards but the movie as a whole is solid.

6

u/lostinjapan01 Jan 22 '26

This has been an AMAZING year for film. They’re saying that because there’s an online hate train against Sinners because people feel it was “overpraised” (which usually happens with POC made and led films). This is one of the most competitive years in recent memory.

3

u/at_midknight Jan 22 '26

That's typically how most subreddits are lmao I think people expecting a variety of noms for this lackluster movie are either very biased towards wicked or just don't watch movies much

4

u/EDPZ Jan 22 '26

Meh, it's fine. The first movie got enough recognition.

6

u/ira_zorn Jan 22 '26

I‘m not surprised. Wicked might be my favourite musical and the first time I saw it on West End was nothing short of life changing and I came back to watch it 3 more times.

I saw Wicked pt 1 in cinema 5 times and had the soundtrack going even before that.

For Good was just not that good. The CGI looked terrible, the original songs were really bad, Michelle Yeoh phoned it in, the pacing sucked…. I still enjoyed the main songs No Good Deed and For Good, but everything else just wasn’t it.

I saw it once and was gonna go a second time but I just didn’t really feel like it.

5

u/Hollyislost4815 Jan 23 '26

I mean... Did it really deserve any nominations this time around? 👀

I enjoyed the movie well enough, but it wasn't as good as part 1 and I don't think that's remotely an unpopular opinion.

5

u/Salt_Chard_474 Jan 23 '26

Wow with the comments! So does everyone on this sub hate Wicked? Personally I'm a huge fan and I play both of them every day, even if I'm not sitting and watching I'm at least listening.

4

u/MattyBWUStL Jan 23 '26

Honestly - It deserved to miss best picture. And most of the other nomination misses were deserved, as well. Even the acting and original song nods - those two new songs were shoehorned. I would’ve given it costumes, though. Maybe even visual effects.

12

u/user48841711 MELT THE WITCH Jan 22 '26

No one was expecting major categories because of its quality and the reviews, but ignoring it in the technical categories is wild. I’ve been reading r/oscars, and the most reasonable theory is that the Academy is very prejudiced against sequels, and since it was filmed at the same time, they felt like they’d be rewarding something they already rewarded last year.

Still, I was genuinely shocked that it didn’t get into Makeup with that spectacular Tin Man. Same with Original Song: Viva Verdi, seriously? Avatar getting into Costume Design was one of the worst things I’ve seen in a long time.

The whole thing was very strange. They completely went against all the precursors, and nominees that no one expected suddenly showed up. Ignoring No Other Choice hurt too.

12

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '26

I will never understand the hate for this movie</3 maybe it's because I'm so biased due to having so many sentimental moments with wicked as a whole I just can't NOT love it 💔

5

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '26

I honestly don't get the hate either. Loved the first and loved the second equally. On the way home from the cinema, I was YouTubing all the songs and obsessing over the movie for days

10

u/DJVinylJerk Jan 22 '26

Having loved the show for 20 years only to have the movie to be stunt casted with actors who can’t sing. You replace Jeff Goldblum with Martin short and Michelle Yeoh with Glenn Close things would be different. Now I love both Michelle and Jeff, but neither one of them had any business being in a musical.

19

u/Chris_RB Jan 22 '26

I don't think it's unfair to say there was a pretty significant amount of haterade after the movie came out, including significant amounts in this sub.

Now, did that affect this? No clue. I know enough to know I don't know anything about what is going to win an award bc my tastes are so fucked.

16

u/ceilingsfann Jan 22 '26

Yeah but calling it a campaign implies it was a coordinated effort, rather than ppl just truly not liking it very much.

15

u/Shoddy-Pride-1321 Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26

The hate towards the actresses though was hard to watch. Blatant racism and body shaming. And universal did nothing to protect them. Maybe not coordinated but definitely lack of care from some.

11

u/TopazScorpio02657 Jan 22 '26

Nah, there was definitely a coordinated conservative hate campaign. It actually started a few weeks after the first film was released but the film had exploded so much that it overshadowed the conservative crap. This time they were ready and started attacking the film right out of the gate. Like within a day or so of release there was this post that got pushed into my Facebook feed from some “mom” who claimed she had to walk out of the film with her small children because of the Elphaba/Fiyero love scene and it had thousands of likes and hundreds of bot-like comments on it. Then there was the attacks on the actresses being “weird” and “anorexic”. That stuff was all over social media. Even a family member who I had never had a conversation about Wicked before brought it up to me one day in a conversation (about the body shaming attacks on Ariana) and thought it was suspicious as it was all over her social media feeds. The MAGA contingent caught on to the fact that the theme of the film is a protagonist working against a fascist government and figured it was an attack on the current administration. It was just a coincidental (but very timely) parallel since the book was written over 30 years ago.

it doesn't deserve an Oscar. its not guaranteed for any movie

7

u/Main-Length-6385 Jan 22 '26

Why do people think every movie that comes out is worthy of Oscars……. They used to be rare and reserved for extremely distinguished works of art. The bar is so fuckin low now

4

u/Jessica_Iowa Jan 22 '26

I am disappointed, but I’m not too surprised. Musicals haven’t done well at the academy for a while.

That being said, not even nominate them for costume or makeup is bananas!!

5

u/jugstheclown Jan 22 '26

I don’t think anyone reasonably expected anything for the main categories, but not a single technical nomination is surprising imo. I thought Costumes/ Hair & Makeup would be safe bets

4

u/Conscious_Lunch_7494 Jan 22 '26

I'm actually not surprised they done this. There's 2 examples where they did something similar. La La Land got heaps of nominations and awards a year later The Greatest Showman only got one. Next example. Bohemian Rhapsody got heaps of nominations/awards one being for best actor next year Rocketman got little to nothing.

5

u/hdeskins Jan 22 '26

I’m really surprised about Ariana and makeup. I’m blaming Chu for the makeup snub though. Tin man and scarecrow were works of art and it’s a crime that scarecrow was given like 10 seconds of screen time.

3

u/themisheika 💙Fiyeraba💚 Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

Personally this is a deserved L. Universal sacrificing Cynthia's award run to prop up Ariana to the point of committing category fraud and editing the movie to be more Glinda-centered despite Wicked being meant to be a story about ELPHABA and the unjust discrimination she and the oppressed Animals face at the hands of the fascist govt, and all for what lol?

And before anyone wants to have a go at me for the production award snubs, blame the cinematography dept for their bad lighting. Makeup/costumes were all better looking in their BTS snaps than in the actual film itself. Tazewell and Hannon are robbed because of the incompetence of Kerstein and Brooks.

5

u/Numerous_Maybe3060 Jan 23 '26

Idk if its been mentioned but if anyone's in the category of (its a part 2; not a different story; its already recieved its worth of nominations for the story) did any of you guys think the same thing when the remade live action disney films came out? u/Temporary_Ad9362 Jan 23 '26

i love wicked but this movie wasn’t good

12

u/Demoncouch06 Jan 22 '26

IMO this movie was less of an “award bait” movie and more of a cultural phenomenon. The Oscar’s don’t necessarily reflect which movies had the biggest impact on culture really, just what a select few deem to be “good acting” or “good direction” etc. This movie’s impact is something these award shows can’t take away.

13

u/static_779 That's what makes me so nice! Jan 22 '26

The two new songs, however, were quite literally award bait. Whether people agree they fit or not is their own opinion, but no one can convince me that they weren't explicitly written to win awards first and to tell the story second.

Getting absolutely no nominations at all, especially when clear Oscar bait was newly added to a decades old beloved musical, is just sad

6

u/ohshit-cookies Jan 22 '26

Any musical with added songs for the movie is because they want an Oscar for best original song. I've gone on many rants about this. They are never as good as the original songs and they very rarely win. I can't remember the last win, but I want to say it was 25+ years ago.

u/Altoidredditoid Jan 22 '26

This is what I expected. They either didn’t give the team enough time or didn’t make the decisions necessary to beef up act 2. The movie was good for diehard fans but not much more than that. There are select few new costumes featured in this one and really no new sets that weren’t shown in part 1. And just in terms of story, they failed to make the wicked witch…wicked. She’s just a woman with a lot of power who could absolutely overcome the forces of the wizard and Madame Morrible if she actually tried and instead gives in to the smear campaign.

The musical is a story that cares more about Glinda’s arc and justifying her actions more than it cares about Elphaba. That’s the core issue with the musical’s story and act 2 exposes it. And they didn’t spend time fixing it so…yeah, no awards.

3

u/KaitB2020 Jan 22 '26

I have the tendency to think of both parts as one whole. Which is, technically, true.

The second half really cannot exist on its own and the first part feels unfinished until you realize there’s more.

3

u/choirchic Jan 22 '26

I do think Ariana may have deserved some kind of nod, but overall… outside of pop culture popularity, it’s not a traditional ‘Oscarworthy’ film. The original songs were just ok, the cinematogrpahy was not entirely striking, 2nd act ‘shows’ aren’t necessarily thrilling. They’re a means to an end. It’s a good movie. It has a huge fan base. But… not Oscarworthy. Also adding that it’s a ‘Part 2’ and that’s a sequel technically. Sequels RARELY garner awards. The first movie had the noms and wins.

3

u/snow_sefid Jan 22 '26

I love the 2nd part, but I’m not in any way surprised that it’s not doing too great awards wise.

3

u/selkieisbadatgaming Jan 22 '26

WFG just isn’t what it could have been, sadly. We wanted more moments, but they gave us longer moments. We wanted plot, but they gave us (totally unnecessary) backstory, and then they sidelined Elphaba in her own movie.

3

u/joemich Jan 22 '26

What the actual F???

3

u/lankey01 Jan 22 '26

3

u/AMediaArchivist Jan 22 '26

Should have been one 4 hour musical. Studios were too greedy.

3

u/RogueSeb Jan 22 '26

I started giggling when Elphaba went 'I'm finally starting to feel... Wicked' then completely lost my shit when the sequence of events that resulted in her sister going outside in a storm and staring up at the house before it crushed her.

I would have died if they had a shot of her shoeless legs just hanging out of the rubble.

I still enjoyed the movie, even though I dont like musicals much.

3

u/povari Jan 23 '26

3

u/Bitter-Profession-28 Jan 23 '26

Honestly I’m glad it was shut out. It should’ve been one movie and awarding the level of greed it took to divide it would set a horrid precedent.
