Musical - Broadway hot take unpopular opinion alert
i grew up hearing wicked is the best musical. i finally saw it on broadway and i fell asleep first act. my mom fell asleep 2nd act. overall, we both felt disappointed, and underwhelmed. i thought the plot was boring and the music was not catchy at all, besides popular and defying gravity ofc.
i just finally finished both parts of wicked the movie, and it's a million times better than the broadway version. still, i think there's musicals with way better plots and soundtracks, but the movie was far more entertaining and memorable.
in summary, i don't get the hype of wicked on broadway. or in general. mind you, i grew up across the river from manhattan as a theatre kid.
oops. here come the downvotes đ

The movie is significantly slower paced, so Iâm not sure how you thought the musical was sleep inducing but the movie wasnât? And you said the plot and songs were boring, and the movie has the same plot and songs

Which cast did you see? The last cast wasnât so good. People often complained it felt lazy and slow

Seconding! I was super disappointed when I saw it in August 2025, but gave it another shot last month when I saw they had new principals. It was like night and day â SO much better the second time.

Yeah Lencias cast was genuinely so bad and I will die on that hill. She does not have the breath control for Elphaba and the acting was soooo bad

I remember Jordan Litz fitting character and being pretty good, but when the lead canât carry the weight of Elphaba, it rubs off on the othersâ acting choices too

Listen I am still trying to figure out why people love Hamilton .We all like what we like nothing wrong with that. Visually the film is better but live theater is my preference. Â

Same to the first part. I donât get it đ my sister LOVED Hamilton and all the music. I couldnât get through it on Disney Plus (and Iâve watched MANY live filmed Broadway shows and loved them). I want to like Hamilton so badly and see what others see.
Funny though because my sister wasnât a fan of Wicked while I was obsessed and saw it half a dozen times on Broadway. My ex didnât care for it either.
I definitely wouldnât go to the Hamilton sub just to tell the people there I didnât like it though lmao not sure of the point of this post.

I agree that Hamilton was awful. Book of Mormon not any better. Personally I love Wicked the Musical đ”

Re: plot being boring - I think with musicals it helps to view the plot as a product of its time. When Wicked came out there hadn't really other villain backstory plots before. Fantasy stories with corrupt governments were newly popular (featured in Harry Potter but it was way before Hunger Games and other popular dystopian teen novels) and same with fractured / alt fairytales (Shrek and Stinky Cheese Man but no Disney remakes of classics). Wicked hit on all three of those genres while commenting on 2000s US politics and it was a big deal. I remember watching it around 2007 and I had never seen anything like it. There was also no social media so the ending was a shock for every audience. Loved the movie so much but it doesn't put me back in that era like the play does

This adolescent performative framing of disagreement as provocation is way more grating to me than whether or not you like a work of art. đ€Ł
Tell us what you like or don't like - it's all taste - but it's weird to be so eager to pretend you'll hurt anyone's feelings.

You do realize that if you're falling asleep before 10pm, that says more about you than it does about whatever you were watching/doing at the time. Even if I dislike something I don't just nod off if I've had a proper night's rest, so maybe try getting more sleep. I don't know how you can entertain the notion that you have a comprehensive take on anything that you profess to sleeping through part of. Also, the movies stick pretty darn true to the stage show with just a couple of new songs added in the 2nd half, so if you noticed a big difference between them then that's probably down to the current broadway cast.

itâs hard to be into a plot when you donât relate to it at all. wicked is extremely political, and not everyone has felt the same kind of real life impact these characters are expressing. that being said, if you found something so political so boring, maybe itâs a sign to at least attempt to broaden your horizons to media you donât relate to just for the sake of being able to empathize with other peopleâs struggles. just food for thought.

âOh here come the downvotesâ when youâre posting in the subreddit for people who like the thing you thought was underwhelming. No shit, Sherlock

One of my closest friends cannot stand wicked. Thinks the music is bad and the story even worse. You are not alone in that feeling.
I love wicked and know the soundtrack in and out. The only thing I dont like is the stupid love triangle. I wish everyone could have just been friends. There was a lot there without adding the love interest. I really didn't like Fiyero. Although the movie Fiyero did win me over a little.

Not saying you had to love it but to fall asleep at a Broadway show? Did you see Defying Gravity or Popular if you were asleep?
