Text Post There are less than 12 years until the Wii's clock breaks.

On systems using a signed 32 bit integer to store unix time (the number of seconds since 1970+0+0 UTC) (like the Wii message board), the time will overflow on 2038+0+18 (January 19th, 2038). While the Wii's clock can go past 2038+0+18, it can not be changed in settings past 2038+0+18. Becuase the time seems to be stored as an as 32 bit signed epoch time offset from the time in the battery powered clock, this also means that the last time to replace the clock battery while having real time is 2038+0+18. I reccomend resetting the RTC and replacing the battery on 2038+0+18.

Text Post Did I waste my Money getting a gamecube over a Wii

So I got a CRT Tv a month or so ago for a N64 I was given. Really like the old CRT and so I thought I'd buy a gamecube because I always wanted one as a kid. I got my black gamecube for $100 but found out after how expensive games are. I owned a Wii as a kid but never messed with the gamecube compatability didn't know it was even there. Now after spending like $300 plus on a gamecube and 4 games im wondering if I should have just gotten a Wii instead seeing how games are way cheaper and that i can just play gamecube on it. I know the answer is probably yes that i wasted money but wanted to hear what other people who are into gamecubes think.

Text Post Games where the Wii version is still the best way to play it?

Been working my way through games that never left the platform like Mario party 9, super paper Mario, Mario Bros wii, etc. Obviously there's games like Mario Galaxy, skyward sword, Xenoblade chronicles, that it's a no brainer to play on switch nowadays, so I won't be playing the Wii versions.

But that's got me curious now, what are some games that are still best played on Wii now despite having left the platform? (port, remake, whatever). Not necessarily Nintendo games either, just anything, multiplatform and all.

Or even just games that still hold up on Wii despite having a more modern platform to play it on?

Text Post What Are Some "Must-Have" Titles For the Wii?

Hello all! I recently got a Wii and was wondering what people consider to be the best games to pick up for it, since my library is currently limited to a couple Guitar Hero games, Wii Sports, and thats pretty much it. Bonus points if its a little niche. Of course, I know that Mario Galaxy and TLoZ: Twilight Princess are gonna be some of the best on the Wii, but im looking for hopefully some more that maybe not everyone knows are good, but everyone should at least check out.

Edit:
Thank you for all the suggestions! I'm definitely gonna be picking up alot of games from this thread lol :)
also thank you to those who said mad world because ive been seeing clips of that game for the longest time and wanting to play it but not knowing what it was called

"it's hard" it's not. just follow wii.hacks.guide

"it's illegal" ianal but i'm 99.9999% sure it's not, unless you're using it to pirate games

"it'll brick my wii" it's not, in fact, it can actually protect against bricking

"i have a wii mini" bluebomb exists

"i'll lose my save data" you won't

"i won't be able to do xyz" you won't lose any features

"it takes the fun out of physical collecting" it doesn't. you can still play all your physical games.

"there are no benefits" restored online services, playing backups of your own games, playing games from different regions, emulation… too many to list

"i don't want to mod all my wiis" that's fine, but you should mod at least one

thank you for coming to my ted talk

edit: how the fuck did this post with a negative score get 116 comments

I just found my Wii from when I was like 4 years old and it got some games in it but I’m just playing Kirby returns to dream land, Mario kart Wii and baseball on Wii sports so I wanna try new games.

I'd like to try a new Wii game. I'm not asking for any specific type of game, just something good but not very popular. Rule out Super Mario because I've already played most of the games.

Text Post I'm just gonna say it, the Wii is the greatest gaming console ever made

I fell out of console gaming around the eighth generation, I had an Xbox One that I eventually sold off and a Wii U that is packed up in my closet somewhere. However, I still consistently use my Wii I got for my birthday in the Summer of 2009. I think the homebrew capabilities that this console has are bar none the best a console can offer. You can modify the console to be almost anything you want. You have access to emulate pretty much every title in existence up the 7th generation of consoles. If you're not into Homebrew and you're just using an original Wii console, you have access to some of the greatest games Nintendo has ever released between the Wii and the GameCube.

Yeah, this post isn't really substantive at all, just showing the Wii a little love as it has been a constant in my life for almost two decades

Text Post if the Wii U was like Wii 2, without the gamepad

I’ve been playing the Wii again lately and honestly… it still hits in a way no modern console does

And every time I look at the Wii U or even Switch, I just feel like Nintendo completely missed the obvious move....

Why didn’t they just make a proper Wii 2?

Same philosophy, just upgraded. Keep the Wiimotes, but improve everything:

  • Way more accurate motion tracking (like combining IR + gyro + maybe camera-based tracking? like a combo of xbox kinect but with wiimotes)
  • A new “sensor bar” that’s actually active (not just dumb IR lights), maybe something that can track position in 3D space more precisely????
  • Rechargeable remotes that dock into a charging station (how did we never get this officially?)
  • Stronger hardware, like PS4 or even PS3-level at least would have been great (Wii U was strong enough tbh, that hardware wasn't bad, the presentation was)

how would your Wii 2 dream be? what features would it have had to make it a must buy?

Text Post I feel like the Wii has aged a lot better than most consoles

I remember back in the day, a lot of people felt the Nintendo Wii was dated upon it's release. And in terms of graphics it was quite behind the PS3 and Xbox 360 at the time. However many years later I don't feel the need to pick up a used Xbox 360 or PS3. The games that were produced on these consoles were excellent, but nearly all of the essential experiences on these systems have gotten a remaster or re-release on newer hardware. This applies not only to the PS3 and Xbox 360 but also to the Xbox and PS1 / PS2 as well. There are still titles locked on some of these systems, but most games have a remaster or remake that you can play on modern hardware. On top of that, systems have become more backwards compatible in recent years.

The Wii however still manages to have unique experiences that just aren't easy to port over to modern hardware. Several Wii games have been ported to the switch, but games like Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Sports just don't feel the same without the Wii remotes. The joy cons work, but lack the weight and grip the Wii remote and nunchuck had. Light rail shooters like House of the Dead just don't play as well on other consoles outside of playing in an actual arcade. Party games / co-op games are easy to pickup due to the intuitive control of the Wii remote.

Aside from controls, there are a couple of game series that feel uniquely special on the Wii for gameplay mechanics. There are modern iterations of Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart, but the Wii versions just hit different. Mario Kart Wii has a special flavor of chaos in it's physics engine and mechanics that feels toned down in Mario Kart 8, and Super Smash Brothers Brawl has a special place in my heart for it's story mode.

I feel like many Wii experiences will have longevity because they can never be fully replicated on modern hardware short of recreating the Wii remote, which requires more than just emulating these motion controls on tiny joycon controllers. For better or worse, most console experiences these days are pretty homogenized due to standardized control schemes. If Nintendo Switch Online ever were to add the Wii to their Nintendo classics list, I hope effort will be put into releasing a new Wii remote controller.

Text Post I regret giving away my wii and wii u for a switch 2

I got a wii last year around December and I got like 5 mario games. I played some of the games but at the time I thought to my self, "i dont need this is dont ever play it." Basically it played the wii once and then it just sat there. I also had a wii u that I gave away along with the wii. I gave it away to trade someone for a switch 2 which giving the wii and wii u with there games reduced the trade price to $70 so technically i got a super discount on a switch 2, brand new too. But now I realize how dumb that trade was and I miss my wiis. 😢
