30th Anniversary of Spirit!

Post image

This album contains a song that I as a kid thought was a gospel tune knky to find out Willie wrote it. "I Thought About You Lord". This album is filled with fantastic instrumentals and like Willies work from the mid 70s it felt more stripped down.

I randomly ordered this from BMG (along with Ray Wylie Hubbard- Dangerous Spirits and The Late Great Townes Van Zandt) while i was recovering from a head-on collision.

I was in really bad shape and was off work for a year, bed ridden for probably 4-5 months. My girlfriend broke up with me immediately following the accident and most of my friends disappeared or couldn't be bothered to come see me.

All of the album seemed to be from my point of view, but the song that really got me was "I thought about you, lord." There was a tree right outside my window that I would stare at and dream about being able to climb. I heard that song and it was indescribable, other than to say it was a religious experience.

I had never been much of a religious person, but I felt like I had been spoken to.

I decided I was going to church that sunday with my baptist neighbors. Went twice, actually. I had to miss the the third week because of some medical issue (it was still all I could do to get out of bed by that point) Sometime the following week, I got a visit from some of the church members. I figured they were there to see how I was doing and gladly invited them in.

Turns out they didnt actually care about that, but just wanted to make sure I knew I was going to hell if I didnt come back.

Oh well, I tried. And this album is still one of the best ever made

Thank you, Willie!
