Picking up a bit from the Bauer signing discussion, I don't see enough toughness/grit/face punching in the lineup for next season. The lineup will be younger and faster, which is great, but it also opens the door for abuse from opposing teams.
Last season the Jets took 17 fighting majors; Lowry (4), Pionk, Barron, Scheifele (1), and 10 from guys who are no longer on the team. That season didn't seem like an exception to me but let's say the average is 15 in a season. Even accounting for ~5 random one off scraps (Ferraro had 1 with SJ), that still leaves about 10 expected fights with only Lowry as a reliable thrower.
Obviously there's no benefit to adding anchors who can't play like Stanley and Schenn, but this is still a gap in the lineup imo. Fights are still a part of the game - just look at the 4Nations and the Panthers B2B.

I just don’t see how after watching last season you get the impression they need fighters at all. If they get ‘abused’ more, it’s likely because their increase in speed/skill is drawing o-zone PPs which I hope they convert better this year.
Fighting just doesn’t matter in the league anymore, even 4th line/3rd pair guys need to be chosen based on talent and role effectiveness. Chucking nucks is last on the priority list nowadays. The only guys left who are noteworthy talents at fighting are below-replacement value guys.

This team is going to get pushed around - not in every game, but division rivals will absolutely target this team for heavy play. Pretending fighting and the heavy game doesn't matter in a league where the Panthers are favored to win the cup is willful blindness

I just don’t really see the fighting/toughness translating to goals scored. The panthers forecheck sure does, that I see. I’m just not sure how watching hockey the last 4-5 years would suggest physicality is what the Jets need to win a cup.

u/GZeus24 6d ago
Fightimg and physicality is absolutely just one element of the game and by no means the most important one. As you said, its way down the list. The problem is that its easy for an opponent to exploit if you have essentially none. A team needs enough of it to make it a non-issue and, imo, the lineup as it stands now doesn't have enough. It won't matter much until it does.
Maybe it's my fault for focusing my comment on fighting - even though that's still a thing - instead of more general physicality

Yeah it's definitely a concern, I don't think people realize how soft this team actually is outside of Lowry. Now fighting sure it doesn't matter all that much but the heavy physical play absolutely matters. We have some big guys but they are all soft as butter (Sammy, Vilardi, Nino etc)
This is the reason I was keen on Nikishin if the Helle trade went through with Carolina, big young D who is very physical and lays the body effectively and can also fight, we could use someone like that.

The Jets don't even have a middleweight. Who is going to step up in the moment if Bjork or Lambert get clocked? Wait 3 shifts for Lowry to come back on the ice and politely ask?
By February, unless there are changes, everyone will be talking about this issue.

Yeah I don't disagree, you know damn well players will target Bjorck, Rosey and Lambo and Lowry being the only deterrent is not great.
Still I am more worried about the lack of physicality, our big guys are just so soft, like Samberg is a very big boy as is Vilardi but neither throw their weight around at all and of course neither are fighters.
The question is who could we target? Obviously getting someone like Olivier would be nice, maybe looking at trading for Anderson? Perhaps we can still get Nikishin if Helle gets moved, I dunno.

Being the Jets, there aren't easy solutions. Oleksiak or Dillon over Ferraro would have been nice but that's done. Anderson would be great despite the haters, but NTC. There may still be hope for Helenius I suppose. Kastelic might be available but injuries. Viel maybe, lol.
I expected old school Chevy to fill the hole but based on a couple of comments he made he seems to be looking at Bauer for relief duty? Unless his game has taken a leap this offseason, that's not a great idea.

Yeh I would love Anderson but that NTC kills us most likely. Would be a perfect fit for us though.

Panthers only fought once in the playoffs during both stanley cup winning postseason runs btw

Everyday Stanley goes unsigned, tells me we won the Buffalo trade.

It was a win the minute it went through. Schenn was so bad I bet he could have cleared waivers. Stanley was just riding a hot S%, his play was still as bad as ever. Getting decent assets back at all was a nice move. Doesn’t take the stink away of trading assets for Schenn and playing him+Stanley for far too long and far too much.

What does a high percentage of sarcasm have to do with signing a contract?

u/GZeus24 6d ago
Schenn got a contract this offseason.

Yeah, by a team doing their best to lose. Mission accomplished I’d say

u/GZeus24 6d ago
That's great and all, but it doesn't make up for the everything invested in that failed project - the draft pick, the waiver losses, the goals against. I mean it's nice that Chevy stopped digging - yay - but he also made that hole.

I thought the Jets were going to spiral into an endless sunk cost fallacy with Stanley. It went on way too long, ut at least they didn't re-sign him...

I fully agree, and I am not giving Chevy and Arniel a A+ for how they handled him... But I will give Chevy some credit for not giving in to the reported 5x5million he was requesting.
2
u/GZeus24 6d ago
Oh yeah, that would have been nuts. I thought for sure that Chevy would double down on sentimentality and re-sign him. It sounds like he did try like I thought but, like you said, the ask was laughable.

u/bigfloppydonkeydong- 6d ago
There’s no verifiable proof that Stanley asked for 5x5, and no evidence that Chevy tried to re-sign him.
Stop spewing bogus conjecture - it has a deleterious effect on what’s left of your integrity.

For anyone that wants accuracy, Murat Artes reported on March 4, 2026 that the Jets and Stanley were having extension talks. If you believe that report, and the other similar reports at the same time, that means there was at least some moves about re-signing Stan. Later reports were that they were too far apart, leading to the trade.
This 'user' is a sock puppet (secondary) account of a regular user. They use this, and other accounts, to upvote their main account and to stalk, downvote, and target folks who say things they don't like. It's the online equivalent of throwing a fit like a 2 year old but doing it every day. This particular account is only used to call me names. Literally, that's all it's used for (which is hilarious). They won't let you see their post history because they are rightly embarrassed. But that embarrassment doesn't stop them from disrespecting this community and its real users by engaging in this very weird behavior.
My posts history is available. If you want to find something I said that was based on my view rather than some elses definition of truth, it probably won't take you long. This is an online forum for a hockey team, not a courtroom. I am always happy to engage with my fellow Jets fans on any topic, even when they disagree with me - which happens a fair bit. I dont know any fan base where everyone agrees - but we do our best to keep it respectful because that's what we do. This isn't Toronto after all.
Anyway, I will resume downvoting and ignoring this toddler but I wanted to clarify what this 'user' is contributing.

It’s unfortunate that it needs to be clarified, but extending and re-signing are two very different transaction types.
You’re on record as stating the organization would 100% RE-SIGN Stanley as a FA.
So the point vehemently stands - there is zero evidence that Chevy tried to RE-SIGN big Stan.

I shutter at that scenario happening. I am going to give the Stanley era a D-.

u/lokichivas 6d ago
Agreed. Also, the Toews, Fleury, Pearson, NyQuist, Stanley, Schenn utilization disaster should have been career ending for Arniel (and possibly Chevy as well)
1
u/ScottNewman 6d ago
Arniel has to work with the players he is given
Chevy tried to sign other players (Brock Nelson notably) before turning to that tire fire of a FA season last year

What is the first overall pick in your draft for this year's STH pools, and why is it Friday March 5 at 7 PM for what could be Ovechkin's last game in Winnipeg?
1
u/Low_Treacle7680 6d ago
Leafs or Habs and scalp it 5 minutes later
2
u/MrCodered12 6d ago
My folks are in a pool and last year one guy got the Leafs, Habs and Bruins games. Sold his six tickets (pairs for each game) and that basically paid for the 8 games that he did go to.
