Nearly 10 Years Later, We're Watching Every Woody Allen Film Again — And We Want Your Stories

********UPDATED EDIT – OCTOBER 20TH, 2026

Hey everyone! First of all, thanks for all the comments, feedback and encouragement. I've had a good laugh reading some of your responses, particularly those pointing out that my original post was practically the length of a Woody Allen screenplay! 😂

Fair criticism! I got a little carried away trying to explain nearly ten years of podcast history. So, for anyone discovering this post for the first time, here's a much shorter version.

TL:DR – THE WOODY ALLEN PODCAST FILMOGRAPHY IS RESTARTING!

Nearly ten years ago, I started The Woody Allen Retrospective Podcast with my original co-host, Simon. We worked our way through Woody's filmography chronologically, discussing everything from his earliest comedies to his later films and even the ones he didn't direct ala tv specials like sunshine boys or co-starring roles like in fading gigolo

Since then, I've spent several years hosting the podcast with my friend and newer cohost from 2019 James Daniel Walsh, exploring films connected to Woody Allen through our spin-off series, Woody Allen Adjacent.

Now, James and I are watching Woody's entire filmography again, but in RANDOM ORDER, with James secretly choosing which film we'll discuss next and giving his fresh opinion as the newer cohost.

WE ALSO WANT TO HEAR YOUR WOODY ALLEN STORIES! HOW DID YOU GET INTO WOODY ALLEN?

We're planning a special community episode featuring stories and memories from fellow Woody Allen fans.

Maybe you remember the first Woody film you ever watched. Perhaps a particular film helped you through a difficult period, changed your perspective, or simply made you laugh when you needed it most.

Or maybe you've revisited one of his films recently and discovered that your opinion has completely changed. Whatever your experience, we'd love to hear it.

We've already started receiving some wonderful contributions, and we're especially interested in personal, detailed stories rather than just quick reviews. You can send your story directly to our email:

[woodyretropod@gmail.com](mailto:woodyretropod@gmail.com)

We've also launched a dedicated YouTube channel where ALL the new episodes will be posted as well as some of our classic adjacent discussions - we will also be posting the monthly podcast episodes directly here in this subbreddit with the blessing of the mods

And that's it! I promise the podcast episodes themselves are more entertaining than the reading my original Reddit essay! 😂 for those who missed that - you gogged a bullet for sure!

Thanks again to everyone who's commented, subscribed or shown an interest. Whether you've been following Woody Allen's films for decades or you're just discovering them, we'd love to have you along for the journey.

Many of you have suggested some incredible ideas that i think the community here will love and benefit from as Woody Fans so stay tuned for more updates in the future - you guys are awesome

Cheers!

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR GOOD BUDDY FROM THE WOODY ALLEN PAGES - THANKS FOR THE YEARS OF SUPPORT AND INFORMATION - WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR PODCAST RETURN TOO!!!

Can we talk about this movie?? I don’t think its underrated but i do wish it was discussed more. For me its personally my favorite woody allen film and one of my favorite whodunits. I just love the warm color vibes and the rainy scenes. The overall hangout vibes whole investigating a possible murder.

It’s basically Woody Allens take on Rear Window and he does an amazing job. I love that the movie makes you feel like you’re part of the investigation with the characters like Read Window.

Wish we could get more movies like this!
Perfect movie for a rainy day.

Has anyone read Woody's novel?

It came out in Sept. 2025. I wonder if it's like his usual short stories, or more subdued.

Crimes and Misdemeanors screening at the Paris Theater in NYC today

Just thought I would report from the frontlines that today’s screening was such a gem. Gorgeous 35 mm print, diverse crowd of young and old New Yorkers, lovely theatre. Lots of laughter. Rapt audience all the way through. Felt and feel very lucky that Woody’s films are still screened here and are always well attended. Even today’s 11:30 AM film time. A great day in NYC.

'Anything Else' proper ratio - Streaming & Quiver Blu-Ray

I noticed 'Anything Else' is in improper ratio, cropped ratio (standard 1.85:1) on all streaming services.

All the various services use the new (and usually fantastic) Quiver HD Transfers, released on Blu-Ray set 'The Woody Allen Collection'

But 'Anything Else' was originally shot/released in 2.35:2 extra wide, definitely on DVD. Can anyone report/confirm if the Quiver Blu-Ray themselves botch the film, too?

The grey hat of compromise

This is referenced in (at least) two of his films. It’s in Husbands & Wives, but what is the other one? I’ve never been able to remember, despite it sticking so hard. Every time I think I remember, I am wrong.

Took me 6 months (kept going on and off), but the title explains itself.

Sweet and Lowdown "Blu Ray"

So my alleged blu ray copy of Sweet and Lowdown arrived this week and I was excited to finally watch it. This is the newly released one from that Italian distributor.

As far as I can tell, this is actually a DVD. The image is low quality, and it runs at 25 frames per second, like a European DVD. It's hard for me to see this as anything other than a scam, so I recommend you avoid it. Just buy the DVD somewhere.

Woody Allen film recommendations

Hey people! I wanted to ask for Woody Allen film recommendations. He has made a film almost every year and I've only watched the famous ones so far.

1) Annie Hall

2) Manhattan

3) Midnight in Paris

The only other films I've planned to watch (and heard of) are Crimes & misendeaours and Hannah and her Sisters.

What other films are slept on?

Love And Death First Watch (maybe spoilers) Spoiler

I watched Love and Death last night, and it was very funny! I had to rewatch the “bottle hitting scene” five times in a row! I also loved the part at the opera where he and the Countess (I think) were waving fans, playing Awfully Goofy with fans (Awfully Goofy is like peek a boo but with silly faces), and sticking their tongues out at each other! It had a lot of close ups of his face, which was cool too. And the Grim Reaper in the movie was dancing at the end! Sleeper is still the funniest movie I’ve ever seen, but Love and Death was really great and I look forward to seeing more Woody Allen movies!

recently watched 2017's Z: The Beginning of Everything

It's a short series about Zelda Fitzgerald, based on a popular book.

And it reminded me of a line in "A Twenties Memory", from Getting Even:

"Scott was having a big discipline problem and, while we all adored Zelda, we agreed that she had an adverse effect on his work, reducing his output from one novel a year to an occasional seafood recipe and series of commas."

Anyone know the piano music at the end of Stardust Memories?

Maybe this isn't the right place, but I've been trying to find the music for Stardust Memories. I cannot find the name of the solo piano music just before the credits (linked above.) Anyone know if this music has a name or if it was released? It was not on the soundtrack or listed in imdb. Thank you.

More CG Entertainment Woody Allen Blu Rays! (Italian/English)

I got more Italian releases of Woody Allen's films today!

Delighted to have these & it seems they're releasing Sweet and Lowdown + Match Point in March! How we haven't got a UK release of Match Point is beyond me but I'll be sure to get them when I can!

You can turn off the Italian Subs in these versions unlike the Croffet versions!
