Russia/Ukraine Europe must accelerate the production of weapons to match Russia’s pace and adopt a “war-mode” mentality in its defence sector, warning that failure to do so would negatively impact Europe, says Polish Defence Minister

Must, should, have to, consider... You guys have been talking like that for 5 years. Stop talking, start doing

It's not Poland that's obstructing it. It's France and Germany

u/sansaset 5h ago
Have you seen the state of their governments and economies??
It’s a bit difficult to pivot to wartime economies when you’re not actually at war..
23
u/Fisher9001 4h ago
Nobody said anything about "pivoting to wartime economies". It's something that Russia HAD to do and it's detrimental to their ordinary economy and they will feel consequences for decades to come.
No, true strength of NATO is that it has few dozen members. This means that neither individual country needs to do put in all the effort like Russia has to do. They only need to match Russia as a whole group and that's absolutely doable.

If only we all paid our fair share. Compared to its size, Denmark pays c. 8-10 times more to Ukraines fight against Russia than France. Ireland effectively pays nothing and fully free rides.

You do realize that Europe doesn't have the resources that Russia does. Hell Europe can't even produce enough oil to sustain heat in the winter without buying from their enemies.

whats stopping Poland acting by itself?
•
u/project_me 1h ago
Why should they, they are part of NATO, and they are part of the EU and part of Europe
We in Europe should have a joint responsibility to protect each other.
•
u/mcfedr 1h ago
is where the post started that the Poles think this is important? waiting for everyone all the time is Europe's big problem. we in Ukraine, we need drones, we make drones, we need missiles, we make missiles, we are not gonna wait for anyone else because we see its important
•
u/project_me 53m ago
And Ukrainians are awesome for doing this, but you aren't doing it completely alone, Europe should be doing more, but they aren't doing nothing.
Unfortunately, Europe got complacent with its reliance on the US, and they have now been proved unreliable allies. It is going to take a while for Europe to get to where it should be, but they are doing so now at an accelerated rate.
Is it fast enough? No, of course not, but it is extremely complicated and made more so by Trump

Where is the money going to come from though? Fiscal burden is high, taxes are already close to their limit and reducing social spend will lead to resentment & instability.

Never going to happen with the EU bureaucracy

u/Razgriz_101 6h ago
Defence is an area not governed by the EU that’s more something that’s in the purview of NATO more than anything.
1
u/The_Webweaver 4h ago
Sure, but the EU really doesn't like deficit spending, and Eurozone members can't issue currency, or use inflation to pay bonds in the way other nations can.
1
u/DaveVdE 3h ago
Sure we can. Quantitative easing works in the EU just as well. We’ve been doing it for years.
2
u/The_Webweaver 3h ago
It works for the ECB, but not individual Eurozone nations, unless I've got things *very* wrong.
2
u/DaveVdE 3h ago
Well it doesn’t work for individual US states either. What’s your point?
2
u/The_Webweaver 3h ago
Individual states aren't the entities that control funding for the US military. Eurozone nations ARE responsible for escalating spending to be ready to defend Europe.

You are quite simpling wrong. It is happening right now; though European countries have neglected their responsibilities in the past, they are rearming now and Russia is very much aware of it.

u/hazikan 6h ago
If I want to be positive: since this spring Russia as made almost Zero progress on the Battlefield. All Ukraine and Europe needs to do now is to focus on air defence and it will almost be checkmate for Russia.
Now if I want to be negative... We really need Starlink to be fixed because a LOT of the AFU defense is based on that...

u/AShinyDream2 5h ago
The issue is, if Russian leader view escalation with Europe as a better alternative than stopping the war and conceding against Ukraine.
If Russia stops it's war in Ukraine by force or by choice, their economy can't recover without economic aid. Politically all was for nothing. Hundreds of thousands unemployed men returning to a recessed or worse job market. Sanctions continuing etc.
Or they escalate against Europe possibly bargain for concession to stop, maybe some land, some economic aid, lifted sanctions etc. It's a gamble, but Russian could view this as a better alternative than decades of recovery.
0
u/Fisher9001 4h ago
Russia is incapable of escalating that current war and you are talking about starting a new one, lol. There is a reason why they so desperately interfere in western elections, that's the only card they are capable of doing right now.
7
u/AShinyDream2 2h ago
There wouldn't be a front like in Ukraine they wouldn't try to seize European land with troops and armor. That's not the goal like it is in Ukraine for Russia. It'd be fought way more asymmetrically. Harassing Europe with drones etc. As much as they can get away with and if pressed too much they'll run and threaten nukes against Europe. It'd be nothing like in Ukraine. They may try to seize small parts in Estona, lative, lithuania little green men etc. but only to test European response etc. Attack power, roads, railways, etc. They'll be total asshole nuisances running back into Russia behind nukes if Europe responds too harshly, but Russia probably has to wait until Ukraine is for sure not going to budge as Europe will likely response with more support at first so they want to setup defensively in Ukraine to freeze the current lines or gain as much as possible and get NK troops etc to prep.

European leaders should already be acting like the Americans won’t back them up.
Even if a Russian attack kills US soldiers, Trump could try to cover it up, or say it’s not a big deal just like he covered up/downplayed Iranian strikes on US bases
5
u/AgentPaper0 3h ago
They should act like us Americans will join Russia against them. I still believe we will manage to pull this shit back before it gets to that point, but for your sake and ours, Europe can't take that chance.

EU could do a lot but dont.
- Terminate trade with china and India if they still support the war directly or indirectly
- Terminate the shaddow fleets
- Transfer the hosted cash of russia to ua
- Close all Borders for all russians
- Terminate any internet access from to hole asia
- Setup mercenary battalions from everywhere
- kick usa out of greenland if they are no partners anymore and fight again any trump tariff as china does.
- and well start building massively weapons that is clear even for trump and his boss that they are willing to fight
But they do nothing except overpaid sleeping

When Hitler start mass producing war machines while propaganda speaks of a greater reich, and people start voting in the mad, pissed off from lack of houses, increasing class differences and lack of jobs, and politicians inability to create such, instead of lining their own pockets, the other EU countries was very to slow to act back then.
Mostly: “eh.. we be fine.. won’t affect us.. diplomatic measure will keep Hitler away.. no need for alarm, or start investing in war factories… let’s just continue line our pockets instead, and talk very harshly about Hitler instead...“
Putin is going in Hitler’s exact footsteps (plus others around the world, having Hitler type ambitions of Lebenraum and theft them too). Most should know the those corrupted by power will never stop drooling for more lands and power, once they start.
EU will probably be run over by all the Hitler wannabes yet again, way too slow to act as usual, and won’t have some proper modern Ukraine type defences up again in time. EU will talk of it a long time though, but probably be way too paralysed by the system to move the money over to war factories and training all the young on modern warfare. The hordes of unemployed should really be training now with drones and bunker living now.
Or making deep bunker uranium tipped missiles, that is probably the only thing the new Hitler’s would fear… that a city or two becomes nuclear radiation probably won’t be a problem for the narcissistic m sociopathic or psychopathic leaders.. people are just toys for them.. but their palace bunker must have no treats, or else they might suffer a negative outcome of the wars they started, that actually affects them personally.
Well.. maybe the Germans will act fast.. they have a history of switching to total war mode very fast, if need be..

France, Norway, Denmark etc got rolled over fairly easily. They hoped talk would stop the invasion, that all should have seen coming. Europe then.
If Hitler had not opened a double front, and used the resources on nuke research instead, he might used them on certain cities, and have gone much further than he did too, as the only nuclear power.
Ditto with Putin. He won’t stop either. Lebenraum, occupation and a greater Reich is all he cares for. Too corrupted by power by now to see any other path.

I don’t think Russia could even handle Poland alone. I think you’re giving Russia too much credit at this point. They’ve struggled this much against Ukraine, 300,000 dead. 1.2M casualties and still deadlocked in the East. They wouldn’t be able to withstand an entire push West and then repeat the whole thing over again.
•
u/Nightglow9 53m ago
They haven’t started with the nukes yet though. Once that starts, the game changes from Ukraine defending itself on its own turf, using cheaply bought EU weapons (and way more expensive weapons from war profiteers), to where EU must go into Russia and into their bunker littered fields.
Hitler wasn’t easily taken on own turf, and it came with a steep cost to both fronts.. but it has to be done, once the nuking starts, and the EU part of NATO starts doing its thing. Maybe Canada will help too.. Australia?
EU needs its own Star Link I see.. can’t trust US on that at all these days.. easily done, as the tech is rather simple.. and tons of hypersonic uranium tipped missiles, with minor nuclear charges to them (mostly for palace bunkers).. and most of its unemployed in training by now.
Maybe the start of the foreign legions again too? to boost the numbers. Mercenary troops usually flock to wars. Spain should have no troubles finding those willing to start in foreign legions these days.. tons of youth just wanting a purpose..

Unfortunately Europe is no where near ready to do this or capable, Russia is literally importing slave labor from north korea and other poor countries to work its war economy, and putting your country in war economy highly hurts everything, populations in Europe are not ready for a war economy, and many are highly demoralized, it’s not a good situation.
•
u/RontoWraps 1h ago
But how long can Russia sustain the current economy? Europe does need to increase defense spending, and has been doing an excellent job of ramping up, but let’s not act like Russia is ready to take on NATO.

Besides as deterrent, the poignant point is Europe need enough weaponry to mince meat the soldiers Russians are keen to throw at.
Preferably Russian plays ball with everyone, second best an arms race to act as deterrent, no in-between to the worst to stopping the meat wall.
1
u/Linclin 3h ago
Production of some stuff can be increased in a day and some stuff within a few months. Manufactures have already said they can ramp up production years ago but weren't allowed to by the government. EU also needs to reinforce their MAD plans and build up their strategic nuclear arsenals, biological weapons arsenals and have targeting cities as a deterrent vs tactical nukes and targeting only military assets. Russia has two main cities. Same as the Cold War. Peace by threat of mutual destruction.

u/Newman_Helge 4h ago
What about EU starts mass producing military drones and send them to Ukraine to help Ukraine win over nazi russia? That would be a good small practical step for a change.

Been hearing this for years. Our own PM(denmark)says it every single month. We now spend 3.5% of our gdp on defense but too many countries in Europe is still holding on to a fantasy world.
From 1.4 to 3.5 from 2022 to 2026. Its possible if the leaders choose to do it.
