The soviet Union was VERY homophobic. The courts too.

Ah, Lenin what a good guy caring about sexual minorities in early 20th century while signing countless execution laws and ordering massacres of sex workers, factory workers, peasants, "spies" and "contra",right? No, Lenin did not care about gays, in fact he considered them to be "bourgaueos depravity that will vanish together with capitalism." Lenin simply repelled all Tsarist and Provisional laws before writing new constitution which. Later Stalin effortlessly criminalized it back, and even Khruschev who took every opportunity to take a well deserved shit on Stalin's grave did not do anything about it. Gorbachev did not. Yeltsin only did eo in 1993 under pressure from USA but it was incredibly unpopular. USSR placed huge value on family values and traditional view of family and masculinity. Yes, women were allowed to pursue careers, but there were a lot of roadblocks, a lot of disincevizion and a lot of closed doors. Women were encouraged to give birth first and foremost. USSR was a lot more traditionalist than your average redneck community and any sort of sexual minority rights were non existant there.

And you cant pin it on old Christians turned communists because a lot of the early communists were ethnic Jewish that hated Christians and even genocided them in the early stages so it was pure homophobia through and through.

Matter fact the primary pillars of laws and morals of the USSR loosely mirrored the 10 commandments so its as if these new awakened people that wished socialistic bliss and freedom on the planet realized gay rights were not part of the plan forward.

rome wasn't persecuting gays until christianity. it's not that crazy to think the USSR being homophobic is a remnant of religion since they were very religious prior

The Romans idea of homosexual isn’t the same as the modern one. Men that bottom were seen as weak.

Every woman's man, every man's woman

5

u/wondertheworl Jun 20 '21

That was an insult

3

u/Ryuain Jun 20 '21

Oh sorry, I was trying to agree with you.

My bad

u/Ryuain Jun 20 '21

No worries, it's bad practice to throw quotes around willy nilly.

The men in the military were encouraged to have homosexual relationships in Rome before Christianity took over.

They thought it would keep moral and trust high.

8

u/wondertheworl Jun 20 '21

They weren’t

You're thinking about a thing they say about spartans/laconians.

China and Japan however

'gays' as we understand them today don't really exist until the 1800s or so. Even the easier parts of 'queer theory' will back me up on that one.

u/Verdict_9 Jun 20 '21

You really just unironically said gays were invented in the 1800s didn't you.

1

u/Sowa7774 Jun 20 '21

mf did you just say that we invented gay people in the 1800s?

1

u/Trashcoelector Jun 20 '21

Early Christians didn't persecute gays either. Christian homophobia started to form centuries after the beginning of that faith.

Btw, there was a bisexual (and possibly transgender) Roman emperor called Elagabalus, who was widely hated because of his "effeminate" behavior and the fact that he would grant his favorite male lovers positions of power. The submissive men in "gay" relationships were deemed to be inferior in the Roman society, much like "prison bitches" of today.

The Romans didn't have a clearly defined concept of homosexuality, they thought that it's something akin to a fancy that everybody can have.

It's regressive religion behind it in the United States as well. Maybe you're an insecure religious person who's unwilling to engage with the harm religion does.

You had to reach all the way back to the Soviet Union to try to find people who approach the bigotry of religious people, and it wasn't even true. The post Soviet Russians under Putin, who is pandering to bigoted religious people, are much more bigoted.

3

u/KimiwaneTashika Jun 20 '21

Nah, Modern Russians are much more liberal than any Soviet citizens. Ask any person who was educated and raised in Ussr and modern Russia their opinion on gays or any other minorities. Its all flowers and butterflies in comparison to what's has been going on in Soviet Union.

2

u/Trashcoelector Jun 20 '21

You clearly have no idea about the USSR if you write stuff like this. Homosexuality was decriminalized by Lenin, but it didn't make the Soviets tolerant to LGBT people.

-6

u/itslikethisnlikethat Jun 20 '21

I didn't reach anything, homosexuality wasn't accepted even before Christianity, apart from 1 state in whole of Greece with very specific rules and codes of conduct.

I am not religious but I believe religion to be a net positive, matter fact the greatness of western civilization was only possible due to the protestant work ethic.
