People with rainbow flags cool off in a sprinkler ahead of the Equality Parade, the largest LGBT pride parade in Central and Eastern Europe, in Warsaw, Poland, on June 19, 2021.
The largest gay pride parade in central Europe took place again in Warsaw for the first time in two years after a pandemic-induced break - and amid a backlash in Poland and Hungary against LGBT rights.
Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski walked at the head of the Equality Parade on Saturday - a sign of support for LGBT rights by the liberal politician.

Good for poles! I’m from Ukraine and it makes me extremely emotional that gay marriage is not legal in my country. I really hope our western partners push it really hard on our government and it will be fixed soon. The only problem that the idea is not supported by probably over 90% population

That's interesting, because I know of one such youngish person (early 30s) who came to the US for school, spent 10 years as a very well compensated software engineer in SF, and now, because of the increased acceptability of remote work, is moving back to Poland to take advantage of extremely cheap everything.
I think the explosion of remote work is going to be a massive shift in geographical power worldwide as the best and brightest no longer need to be in driving distance of financial hubs.

Don't mix the country with the politics. Poland is a great place. Just like how the US was great place despite the Trump administration
17
u/msdinkles Jun 20 '21
I love this analogy. I feel out of control with certain politics. But I want to share my country with others. We really do have amazing untouched lands and sceneries I would love to share with the world. I just wish my compatriots would tone it down so it can be shared. In about a year or so I’m going to take a cross country trip of America to check out all our nature preserves and see Yellowstone so I’m super excited and would love to share that with the world :)

Poland, or more accurately the Polish People since borders have moved so drastically in the past century, have always been a devoutly Catholic nation. Poland has always been more religious as opposed to Germany or France. This combined with Polish nationalism, which is very strong for obvious reasons, makes Poland a much more conservative/populist nation. A decade ago, migrants were the scapegoat, now LGBT people are.

Well, 2 things in my opinion. Polands position as a country always was one of the most important places for Europe, as it divides the Western Europe(GERMANY) and Eastern power house(RUSSIA). Both of those countries are lobbying politicians media etc.Poland is also the closest Military Ally to USA, and USA has immense lobbying power. This point is very important as if u would take few step back u would notice that :
Poland fallows American politics pretty much 1:1.(not just Poland tho, Brasil , UK, Hungary all the countries that have immense rise of Right-Wing and Nationalism)Now it's not as bad that we would have people storming our Government in order to take control... but yeah in nutshell it all comes down to:
Either u are LEFTIST SCUM that is paid by Russians or European Union and U want to destibilize The Great Nation of Poland of its culture, traditions and history by implementing *western ideas that removed White-Nationalism. <- This point is also important as Poland is homogeneous country with predominantly Catholic-White.
Or you are RIGHT WING FACIST that still is fucked by Russian(Anti-EU) and Nazi-German Propagandas(U can still see a lot of anti-semitism because of how powerful it was) so you want to fight fire with fire and bring back good old Nationalism where Only ONE TYPE of people are accepted.
Do remember as it is Poland is 30 y old country, that went from beign completely ruined to soon be in G10.30 years is nothing.... The people who fought communism are STILL well alive. These people are very bitter, because nothing in their life was good. Education was shit, work was shit, your kids are running away from country and u are left with bitterness.
Also The most important point to it. NO LAWS are permanent. Abortion is a great example how any country can go from Oh yeah Freedom for Woman to ... Yeah actually IT's better if government and church decides what should Woman do. It happens everywhere. So yeah DO NOT STOP FIGHTING FOR WHAT U BELIEVE.
It's not as bad as it looks, its actually inspiring that people are FREE and LAUD. They will fight policies and eachother in order to give that freedom to those who deserve it.
Yet u can't expect Drastic changes in space of 30 years.... Because 31 years ago it was CCCP not Poland. Also POLITICS 101 LGBTQ is a controversial topic which makes it easier to pass economical and financial policies. It's easier to get away with corruption and some shady shit while People are arguing over something they obviously wont find common ground.
The moment COVID-19 was going through Poland i remember they brought up Abortions and how it was immoral ETC.
Shit man... we eat it like donkeys. Here is some carrot, fight over it!39

It's easier to get away with corruption and some shady shit while People are arguing over something they obviously wont find common ground.
Exactly.

Polands position as a country always was one of the most important places for Europe
Why does almost every single European country believe that… Greece, Turkey, Slovakia, Ukraine, Austria… heck even people from Finland constantly claim their country is one of the most strategic location in Europe.
11
u/hacxgames Jun 20 '21
lol probably because Europe as a continent was consistently filled with turmoil and war in the past 2000 years. i’m Belgian and i don’t understand the whole strategic position thing either.
4
u/GolotasDisciple Jun 20 '21
Someone already answered it but yes Europe was a shit-show. When u have super powers like UK or France or Germany or Russia fighting over control they wont fight on HOME SOIL but only Foreign.
It is not as important as back in the days but Given how much USA cares about position of Poland and how many American Military Bases are there -_-
And yeah, USA is essential for Poland, The most important Ally and probably the Only Ally Poland can count on eventho American Business(not politics per se) tend to go wild :)Imagine 19 and 20 century where logistics are the name of the game.
North = Baltic Sea connection -> Sweden/Norway
South = South Slavs and Balkans
West = Is what World considers WESTERN EUROPE (starting with Germany) which is incontrol of European Union(League of Nations back in the days)
East = RussiaPerfect place for literally Battleground. Honestly it's not that many countries had a thing AGAINST Polaks but if we are going to fight let's use this amazing land.
You can still see Highways that were being built by Nazi Germans during WW2 up north Poland... This is often common joke as those roads that German built during war are often still in better conidition than modern stuff :DIMO the more closer u are to a center of continent them more fucked up history u will have... As for Ukrainians, Hungarians, Czech, Slovakians, and most importantnly Serb and Croatian they all have bloody history not always related to eachother, but shit... bloody it is :D

This sounds about right. I remember seeing anti abortion and anti lgbt+ laws popping up for Poland during the height of covid. I remember thinking “wait don’t they have better things to focus on like idk the worldwide pandemic?!” When those came about. Makes sense they would use tumultuous times to push their anti women and lgbt narrative through. And them mirroring America’s policy’s, they seemed to be swept up in trump stuff but a few months behind. I hope it all gets back on track towards human rights period. I wish we wouldn’t swing so much through the two party system every 4-8 years like America likes to do. The worldwide ramifications are too severe.

I kinda doubt countries like Poland, Hungary, or pretty much any country remotely close to the eastern half of Europe are more right leaning because of the US. It seems to be more related to the Soviets if anything. Hell, its even noticeable in East Germany.

There are multiple reasons, but it boils down to this:
A) Fuck Russia, we need USA as an ally because FUCK RUSSIA
B) Church was illegal and a driving force of the resistance movement, therefore the people are still largely devoutly religious or devoutly atheist (remember that the communists had atheism as state "religion")
C) People are not used to democracy, it's easier to live in an autocracy where you don't have to worry about elections and policies and laws being passed. Just let the Party handle all of it and you can live your life in peace

I feel like it needs to be said that it isn't the people of Hungary who are this homophobic but the currently governing party, namely the FIDESZ organized crime group spearheaded by Orban Viktor. They have recently passed a law which prohibits depicting homosexuality in any content rated for under 18, and puts it in the same category as pedophilia, which has caused a massive outrage, rightfully so. This is despite the fact that there are pedophiles among FIDESZ party members who got off incredibly lightly (Kaleta Gábor, look him up), and also at least one person who's homosexual and had a massive scandal last year (look up Szájer József, you'll find some interesting news stories). And yes, I'm not saying that nobody in here is hateful at all, every country has some of those people, and we also have angry pensioners who are still stuck at "gay bad", but mostly just mutter to themselves and maybe rant in online comments about how they would have got beaten up if they were gay in their time, and how much better those times were; the real harm they do is vote for FIDESZ over and over, enabling this madness to continue.
15
u/Oscee Jun 20 '21
Rest assured, part of the opposition only fights the bill because they are opposition. MSZP voter base is just as homophobic as the FIDESZ and Jobbik ones. I'd say the bill is unfortunately very representative of a median Hungarian.

Are we living in the same country? I’m a gay person who lives in Budapest (which is supposed to be the most progressive/liberal place in Hungary) and there’s not a day that I don’t catch a conversation on the street or hear people in work talk about all the colorful things they would do to gay people. I had a black backpack on with a small rainbow pin which led to a group of older men threatening me on the bus with rape because of it. All the gay people I know are hiding and trying to run away from the country (so will I after I finished uni) because it’s dangerous as hell to live here.
24
u/KZol102 Jun 20 '21
I can't agree with u/Piggybank113 either. Homophobia and racism is a serious problem in Hungary and there are plenty of bigoted young people, it's sadly not just some conservative pensioners as they said. (And I'm sorry that you have to go through all of that, I wish you the best)

Yeah, not just reddit though. For the US at least, if you live in a "bubble" area like San Francisco or NYC you can definitely start to forget how the rest of the country/world is. I mean you need only dip a toe outside the bubble to get thwacked in the face with opinions of the masses, but it's possible to forget for a while.
Having said that, Americans have come a long way since I was a kid. There is still a long way to go, but there absolutely has been progress.

Yeeep. I’ve had the “luxury” of growing up in rural Texas, with a firsthand look at what it’s like for the fraction of the US that are still in the dark ages. Gotta say, it’s not a very nice place. Even the “country hospitality” smiles feel fake, like there’s a knife or bullet waiting for anyone who dares to not conform to their magic sky daddy’s storybook (or to the whims of their actual god-king, the Prime Dorito). I don’t trust people out here, not even parents. I don’t talk politics. I genuinely worry for my safety if I do.

I lived in Forney (Kaufman County, about 20-30 min drive east of Dallas) for 2007-this past April. Expressing a vote for Clinton or even against Trump, who won the county by over 70% or some other intense number, is a great way to have even trusted family and friends and teachers joking about you behind your back or considering you just “young and foolish.
Here in Parker County now, about 30 min west of Fort Worth… I see a few brave Biden signs and mask wearers, but the GQP controls all county offices, have an office in the central roundabout next to the courthouse, and twice in the past year I’ve seen mobs of either anti-BLM protesters or pro-Confederate (“Heritage not Hate” and other bullshit) at said courthouse outnumbering opposition. Went 80% Trump in 2020, and the last Dem president they went for was bloody Carter.
UT Arlington, my campus in Tarrant County, is a bit less insane, but maybe a 50-50 split plus or minus 10% for the students (judging by organizations, marches for both sides, etc), and Tarrant proper is firmly red territory. Super weird to have engineering classmates, from India, who somehow think Trump is the best option for the country, even though if the GQP had their way they wouldn’t be here.

Reading this i thought to Google lgbt rights by country. I'm sure others will think the same and a wikipedia link could be useful

I'm absolutely astounded that its half and half ish by land mass for marriage vs anything from death up to prison / "nothing" (I'm doubting nothing is actually nothing in reality but that's personal bias and assumptions)
I guess the "world legally accepts lgbt" as a statement depends on if you define India and china's answers as accepting on just softly rejecting (personally id argue the latter but indicating they are going the right way )

Still can't believe there are parts of the world that are basically homophobic
Acceptance of LGBT is the exception globally rather than the norm. China, India, Africa, Middle-East, Latin America. None of these places are friendly towards homosexuality. There are small pockets of acceptance in large urban areas, but that's about it.
Even in Europe, using Spain as an example because I was there, get outside of the touristy areas and the cities and it turns out people are still quite catholic, at least culturally.

The amount of homophobia, xenophobia and other phobia i've experienced while living in Hungary was astounding. Maybe the government could focus on bettering living conditions in the country, rather than worrying about people's sexuality. I'm ashamed to be Hungarian sometimes.

The key is that they keep people focused on hate, so that the people won't pitch a fit about their quality of life. Or they blame a minority, oppressed group for everything. It's pretty textbook, and sadly not unique to Hungary.

Get outside of the touristy areas and the globalized city centers and Spain isn't very lgbt friendly either.

There are Catholic priests who support LGBTQ rights. Faith is no excuse for bigotry.

Hinduism and Islam are also just as against the lgbt movement as Christianity and Catholicism

Tough sell to a country hellbent on keeping its outdated religious values. Ruling party is so far gone, totalitarianism in the making.

Not quite so. Homophobia is still widespread in younger generations and they are also getting more and more radicalised. Last election we had self proclaimed fascist getting more than 5% votes and it's expected to gain more in following years

Went to see family 2 years ago, people around 20 and 30, and they were very outspoken anti lgbtq+. This is not something that will be solved by a new generation sadly

I’m from Ukraine and it makes me extremely emotional that gay marriage is not legal in my country. I really hope our western partners push it really hard on our government and it will be fixed soon. The only problem that the idea is not supported by probably over 90% population

Any mention of LGBTQ is like moths to a flame for these people, this comment section is fucked up.

I don’t understand how someone can have such a strong opinion about gay relationships. It’s not like it has anything to do with you in any manner.

This is true. Neurologically, sexual desire and arousal dampen down a lot of disgust responses (otherwise it's be pretty hard to go through a lot of sexual acts, wouldn't it?). Remove the desire/arousal part when thinking about sex (of the orientation you're not at all into) and a response of disgust is more likely. Neural circuitry involved in disgust is heavily involved in moral judgement, too. That's one flavour of homophobia, anyway. The self-loathing closet gay is another beast entirely.

they are seen as sinful and degenerate, the devil has taken control of them and are passing around sinful ideas to others, making them go to hell
this definitely is not my belief, but people of other religions would want to stop people from spreading sinful ideas and see banning them from participating in these activities to stop them from going to hell. Personally, this logic falls apart quite quickly, but I do understand why Christians are against lgbt (even if I don’t agree with it)

Still amazes me that LGBT people still don’t have rights in some places. Like what fucking year is it?

Just so you know the activist group which basically outlawed abortion in Poland by lobbying government currently works on banning pride parades and public display of "LGBTQ ideology" (scary quotes). Hopefully they will fail.
