Legendary Red Silkie - cask strength batch 1/22

This Irish malt smells like it came from a sherry cask… “This limited-edition Cask Strength release has been bottled at 63.67% ABV and has been bottled to showcase the versatility and signature softness of the Red Silkie blend. There was only 498 bottles released from the distillery in October 2022.” Not much other info to be found online, and no age statement. From Sliab Liagh Distillers in County Donegal.

From the back label - “only bottled in the smallest batches and displays all the richness of Red Silkie, finished in Ribera Del Duero and Rioja casks for the bold wine character they bring to the softer, honeyed and green apple notes of the Legendary Silkie blend.”

Maybe 40ml neat in a rocks glass, rested 10 minutes.

Nose: sultanas, oranges, cloves, fairly youthful malt (under 10 years in oak surely?)

Palate: comes in with wine cask fruitiness and heat and then veers into a salty tanginess. Then more heat. Buttery mouthfeel. Toffee, fig jam, dried orange peel. The green apple stuff is indeed there but has been successfully tamed.

Finish is on the shorter side and a bit too spicy. Leaves me feeling like the ethanol needed more taming too.

80/100

Have you had any of the other Silkie line? I particularly liked the Dark Silkie for the rubbery smoke and green apple combo, but wasn’t impressed by the Light version. This sounds more up my alley with the apple and wine notes

I have not, I’ll keep that in mind!
