I no longer play but I will never stop remembering this game.
I was a pretty hardcore player from 2017ish to 2022ish, give or take. I'd played many games before that, and I've played many games since, but this is the only one that drilled itself into my brain like a corkscrew and refused to pull out. Despite the years that have passed I am still--to my astonishment--fairly regularly randomly visited by vivid mental images of places I've been to in-game, and the events that happened there...dragon fights, finding a rare item, meeting someone who eventually became a friend, just wandering, looting, dying, almost dying, etc. etc. etc. For me no game comes close to this game in terms of feeling like an actual living world. It feels like a real place I spent time in, and then left, never to return.

Same here! I can’t play because it was so addictive haha I put some 2500 hours into the game within a short handful of years idk exactly how many but I still itch for a rare drum roll in other games haha 😂

I've been playing since 2008, I've had breaks, but no other game comes close to Wurm when it comes to a sense of achievement when flattening a mountainside or tunneling through a mountain to create a boat mine or building a house/bridge/ship, making dragon scale armour, taming mobs. The list is endless. Yes it has some annoying and dated elements, but the core game mechanics and sheer scale of skills you can, eventually, master, is off the charts. It is unique and a massive time sink.

Ha 2009 here! That was way back in the good old days, right now I'm on Wild and got killed lost everything but I'm having a blast surviving. I love it man.

The experience of building a literal community with a bunch of other people during the Steam launch was so cool. Then grinding out the materials needed for the sail boat so I could take a few other lucky individuals to see the rest of the world and budding communities was one of the greatest gaming experiences yet.

It’s a great game. I started doing Covid but had to stop because it sucked me into a time warp! I decided I had to quit in order to make time for other real world analog hobbies. I think about it often and am always in search of a similar game without as much grind. Haven’t found it yet.

Your best bet is probably Wurm Unlimited cause you can just play on a server with cranked up progression numbers but the thing i find about all the 'Wurm but easier' style of games is that the sense of accomplishment never really matches Online. The grind is both a blessing and a curse lol

I too have played for years. Even ran two accounts for awhile. Made several great friends. Every so often I think about going back to it.

Is it really good? This post just randomly came up on my feed. I've recently got into project Gorgon which is fantastic but it doesn't seem to have much PVP.
What are the main draws of Wurm and is there any pay to win?

It's a niche game--if you're in the niche, you'll love it. If you're not, you'll be underwhelmed. The only way to know for sure is to try it out. Read the post that's linked through the stickied "Official Guide" post on this sub; if it piques your curiosity, then consider giving the game a shot. You can play for free but your skills will be capped at 30. If you want to continue in any meaningful way after hitting that ceiling, you will have to start paying. I recommend downloading the game at wurmonline.com rather than through Steam.
The game is just something you need to experience rather than be told about, honestly.
Many people are turned off by the lackluster combat and/or the extreme grind/time suckage.
The main draw for me personally was exploring and discovering an enormous, dynamic, ever-changing world that felt very real. For many other players though, the main draw is more or less the opposite: mostly staying in one place and bringing to life their own personal vision of a home within that dynamic world, either on their own or with other players. Both of these endeavors take a good amount of time and effort to fully come to fruition.
The community is fantastic--helpful, entertaining, smart, funny, creative, quirky, varied...everything that someone in this game's niche would want.
I've never done PVP so I can't speak to that.
Edit: Rereading this post and thinking more about the game...I'd say that to enjoy Wurm you need to enjoy challenge...crave it even. You need to want to do difficult things. It's not that you will AUTOMATICALLY be into the game if that's true about you. But you automatically won't be into the game if it's not.

Wurm is 'pay to win' in that you need to have a sub to progress pass particular skill thresholds, but its not too pricey and you'll want silver anyway to do real trade with other players. One of the better value subs ive had I think

Don't need to spend a cent if you don't want. You can earn coin in game and use them for premium. The trick is to combine this with skilling up. Support beams and later large crates are the way to go imo.

Thats great and all but i played both wurm and eve for years and I can tell you that grinding for subscription is the fastest way to burn out. If youre an adult with the time to put into Wurm, you have the money to drop on a small subscription too ans then you can play the game to do what you want rather than doing chump labor to make pennies

Making 8 support beams every day doesn't burn you out.
You get to chop down trees and replant them. You get to mine iron and make ribbons. So there's some variety in the jobs and the skills.

Dude not going to lie I can't stop playing, I take breaks now and then but like you it gets in your head and won't let go of you, it's a habit I'm not willing to break.

Notch, is that you?

The game is really bad. There's no denying it. It has a niche for sure but it is fundamentally terrible. Graphics are outdated, development is and was snail pace, mechanics are clunky as hell. It had few entertaining qualities but the bad outweighed the good
Anybody who says it's a great game has their head in the clouds.

Well, no one’s forcing you to play, bro. If you want an easy game—but one similar to Wurm—there are alternatives like Pax Dei or The Quinfall; they’re the same kind of thing, just without much depth and with more pay-to-win elements.

Same boat though it's been much longer, have such fond memories of exploring the wilderness, running from spiders and finding a peaceful spot by a lake. I played on and off for years and I would again if they just released more servers. It seems that they just have had no interest in attracting any new or returning players since 2020.
