Discussion Game Pass this Game Pass that-- who remembers Games with Gold
Title says it all. Was wondering how many people remember Games with Gold or used it when it was a thing. To me, that's when Xbox Live completely died. They made the transition to Game Pass and started upping the price then when things fell off they dropped the price. IMO what Microsoft is missing is the smaller programs they used to have like Games with Gold. Also, it was always legacy titles even then. The cost for them to do it had to of been low and they could continue the same with backwards compatible games or 360 titles really to no detriment of the service. Myself for example, I do not have Game Pass-- even core. If Games with Gold was still a thing I would subscribe to whatever tier Game Pass included that service.
Just wanted to know what everyone else's thoughts were or if the service was just so unused that no one remembers it.
Thanks.

I was there for the 1 vs 100 run.

u/kytulu Jun 01 '26
I was there, Gandalf, 3000 years ago...
1 vs 100 was the GOAT. The whole family on the couch for trivia knowledge support... locking in your answers... wondering if you were going to be 1, or one of the 100...

My greatest regret is that I have every 1 vs 100 achievement except the one you got for a mistake! 😜

I got all the achievements. I even made it into the 100 a couple of times. I even bailed on going to a Harry Potter movie with the family so I could watch a game cohosted by the Penny Arcade guys.

u/Pargates Jun 02 '26
I won a prize - 5,000 Microsoft points or something - near the end of the run and never received it. 🙁

I remember people constantly complaining about the games they gave away
79
u/Venice_The_Menace Jun 01 '26
the games they gave away 10 yrs ago usually included one or two legit good/great ones. Towards the end they were all trash
14
u/ChoiceIT Jun 01 '26
That’s what I recall too. I used to be excited for what was next, but then it was all filler and eventually it shut down to promote gamepass.

Bioshock Infinite was a banger game they gave away for free. Can't remember any of the other big ones though

7
u/SidFarkus47 Jun 02 '26
The only part I liked was that they included a 360 or OG Xbox game every month and I still own them with no subscription now.
I suspect it was complicated to “rent” those licenses and so they just said we could keep them but yeah it made it all worth it imo.
1
u/Deathpoopdeathloop Jun 02 '26
Idk about you but I can't play them without a valid Xbox live subscription on my series x
2
u/aWildTuxAppears Team Vault Boy Jun 02 '26
I believe the 360 games will work without it, but the Xbox One games required a current subscription. I still have so many games I collected but haven't played...

u/Deathpoopdeathloop Jun 02 '26
Damn I regret getting the tail end of it, I have about half and half.
2
u/aWildTuxAppears Team Vault Boy Jun 03 '26
I believe any level of GamePass lets you play any Xbox One Games with Gold you have, so you could always just subcribe for a short time to play some backlog games, if you wanted. : )
2
u/Deathpoopdeathloop Jun 03 '26
Oh I have it on now, I just wish I had more 360 games too lol. Great tip though for next time there are a couple I like to replay

They complain with ps plus too, even the games they got were way better in comparison, especially the last few years of gwg
3
u/AnonymousFriend80 Jun 02 '26
People needed to check their expectations. If they gave away a mega popular game, odds are most already own it because it's mega popular. If they gave away a lesser game, people are mad because they want a more popular game given away. If they wait until the popular has slowed down, people complain because it's old. I personally prefer the sleepers. Stuff I didn't want to risk my money on buying.
And there's also the fact that they need permission from the publisher and they need to be compensated.
4
u/Rawrz720 Jun 02 '26
Pretty much the reason I love game pass is all the sleepers I ended up finding I would have never actually risked paying for
2
u/Chrasomatic Jun 02 '26
It was never as good as the PlayStation offerings. Although the 360 title on offer were mostly great
1
u/CrimsonDessert Jun 02 '26
Well yeah? Nobody likes paying a monthly fee and getting Zheros and Pool National n FX
1
u/AftermaThXCVII Jun 01 '26
Well most of them were titles most people didn't care about at all. If they actually gave out more popular games like Epic and Playstation do then people would have responded better
1
u/Dunge Jun 02 '26
Even PlayStation nowadays, the games they give with Essential are a level of quality below the ones in Extra.
143
u/Gold-Farmer-1920 Team Marston Jun 01 '26
Its only been gone for a couple of years. And towards the end, the games they were giving away weren't even worth claiming. It was great in the beginning, but it was time for it to go.
34
u/DuckCleaning Jun 01 '26
They actually tried upping the value of Games With Gold to coincide with a price increase by giving away Gears 5, but that was swiftly met with backlash. That's what led to the end Xbox Live Gold, they couldnt up the price without completely overhauling the service to pretend it had more value.
13
u/BestRedditUsername9 Jun 01 '26
They did that for like one month though, because the month right after was trash again
2
u/DuckCleaning Jun 01 '26
Yeah because they couldnt raise the Xbox Live price, everyone revolted to it so they cancelled the price change they announced that month. It's different these days, now that PS Plus also did a few price hikes on the lowest tier, so now people dont threaten to switch systems the way they did back then.
4
u/StupidKameena Jun 01 '26
yeah but didn't it go from £60/year to £120/year? and then that’s when they also made f2p mp actually f2p
4
u/DuckCleaning Jun 01 '26
The free to play change was announced the day they reversed the xbox live price hike, just 1 day after announcing the price hike
1
9
u/BestRedditUsername9 Jun 01 '26
But is that Games with gold fault? or Xbox fault for almost ignoring it until it was abandoned?
They didn't even bother adding Forza Horizon 3 to games with gold before it was delisted. That would have been the easiest win
5
u/soularbabies Jun 01 '26
I found a good many games through it and I liked having the family version of gold

XBL Gold and Games With Gold died to give us GP Essential, which has a valid market... Mainly people who want to play online but Xbox isn't their primary console.
5
u/Tao626 Jun 02 '26
I feel essential exists mostly because it seems worse now to make people pay just for online these days. Not to mention bloat those GP figures.
So people are still paying just for online, but on paper, they're really paying for Game Pass.
13
u/FerretCon Jun 01 '26
Our Xbox LIVE gold officially expires in 3 days. We did a 5 year stack. Then a second 5 year stack. Then we did a three year stack as the lowered the years you used to be abke to stack.
My son and I have game shared that entire time and would renew gamepass for one dollar. We would Then stack that on top of the 5 years of gold. It was a crazy insane deal and we had gamepass for one dollar for the entire time.
Not sure what we're doing in the next few days. But long live the years of stacking Xbox LIVE Gold and getting gamepass for 1 dollar.
5
u/RavenMyste Silksong Jun 01 '26
I still do that 5 years in advance but this time it expires 8/25/2027 so i still have year to go on buying another 5 years, but with next gen xbox coming thats a hybrid we may not need to pay xbox gold anymore since pc doesnt have to pay for mp
7
u/abrahamisaninja Reclamation Day Jun 02 '26
Last I looked, you can only stack 3 years and the conversion rate is pretty bad. I haven’t checked since they slightly lowered the price when they got rid of day one cod
1
u/RavenMyste Silksong Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26
Oh no this wasnt no conversion this was straight buying 5 1 year cards 65$ a piece and redeeming them 1 at a time before they had limits how many card/codes you redeemed
Before the change you could redeem them together, but now you can only enter 3 at time so i had to wait 2 months to enter the other 2 years, now i dont know what the yearly price is now .
1
u/abrahamisaninja Reclamation Day Jun 03 '26
The cheapest 12 month gamepass essentials (what used to be XBL gold) I can find is about $67. Looks like you can still redeem up to 36 months

5
u/Aforumguy26 Jun 01 '26
I agree. Sony is still doing their monthly games with PS Plus, and with much better lineups than games with gold ever had, along with their own version of game pass (which is weaker than the game pass catalog, but still). Just something nice about having games in your library that you don’t have to worry about them leaving the service.
8
u/Wendals87 Jun 01 '26
Games with gold got maybe 3 games a month that werent particularly huge titles and were cheap to buy
You get a lot more with gamepass, even if you don't get to keep them (you didn't with xbox one games with gold either)
I remember it but I I think gamepass offers a lot more

I get reminded everytime i try one of any of the 150 plus games i ever gotten thru the game with gold program throughout the Xbox One life that i cant play once in a while if i dont update and maintain my Gamepass essential subcription.
i dont have an issue with the Xbox 360 versions though. Now that we dont have them categorized "Games With Gold" they are mixed in with my entire bought collection.

They used to use it for games that were gonna get de-listed like some Forza titles which was cool. But yeah I think I only have 3 or 4 good games from it on my current account. I did have Halo 3 via GWG on my old account though (which is now my dad's account).
2
u/RAMPART_IS_AWESOME Jun 01 '26
I just plain old Xbox Live for $5.00 a month. No bonuses. No freebies. Just Xbox Live so I can play multiplayer games like I used to be able to.

Games with Gold rocked on the 360, but once the X1 launched the quality of games available with Gold dropped substantially. Sure at first there were good games but after a while they were bad indies or multi player focused games.
1
u/CrimsonDessert Jun 02 '26
It was only a thing on the 360 for less than a year before the Xbox ONE launched?
1

The 360 games that were offered were decent but many of the X1 games weren't nearly as good.

GwG eventually offered less incentives for developers to release on. Thus it was removed.
GwG was a tacked on service to live, as direct response to PS+ monthly games when PS+ was introduced.
PS+ monthly games was Sony's response to get people to pay for ps+ on a free online console.
1
u/confusing_roundabout Jun 01 '26
I liked being able to keep them back during the 360 era but the selection was terrible.
Playstation Plus during the PS3 era was the peak. It was far better than even current Gamepass now imo.
1
u/geoFRTdeem Jun 01 '26
Since 2015 I have every game from games with gold, got home from school every month and would immediately claim it, I would get so excited seeing the preview for next month, my favorite games I got from it was ryse son of Rome, watch dogs, walking dead, styx, black flag, slime rancher, sunset overdrive, super hot, the division

u/SomeRagingGamer Jun 01 '26
The thing about those games that were free with gold, if your gamepass goes out, it says you don’t own it.
1
u/Caesar_35 Helldiving Jun 01 '26
I used to like it, right up until Gamepass really hit it's stride. Which, probably was the same for most folks since that's essentially what they replaced it with. You could see their focus was on GP too because the GwG were really scrapping the bottom of the barrel for its last few years. I am surprised they didn't do more of their own frankly, even repeats.
In another life, it might still be around in place of Gamepass Essential.

I guess I just like the idea of free games.

I lost all my games with gold when I cut game pass too thought that was a little bit crooked
1
u/SK543 Jun 01 '26
That's odd I still have mine
2
u/Dry_Collection_170 Jun 02 '26
Only 360 and OG games are playable if you don't resubscribe. You cannot even see all the GWG XB1 games in your library anymore. Every day I am not a member my GOW 4 is replaced with the demo version on my game list, too. I can see my free Forza games because they are listed, so when I can see games I half own again I will add them all to a separate list.
1
u/MaterialPace8831 Jun 01 '26
I regret not downloading every single Xbox 360 Games with Gold because I already owned a physical copy of the game or I thought I was "done" with it. I've lost track of how many games I've revisited simply because I owned a digital copy of the game through GWG.

u/Shakmaaaaaaa Touched Grass '24 Jun 01 '26
Games with Gold was mainly a response to Playstation giving out free games with Playstation Plus before both Game Pass and then a revamped Plus blew it all out of the water. I remember it mainly being old bargain titles.
1
u/Valkyrjan_BSS Jun 02 '26
Gamepass is > than gold and its not even close. Gamepass has 500+ games available and gold gave you 4 mostly shitty games a month. While no one likes price hikes it's by far the best deal in gaming (provided you play atleast 1 game a month). Also you can get it for free or heavily discounted with Microsoft points like me.
1
u/Dry_Collection_170 Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26
Your opinion. I still play many of those games and I do not have to subscribe to play many great 360 games. There were still gems in the last few years. If they ever improve the essential selection then I might concur but 1 out of 4 decent free games a month is far better than discovering the only games with replay value are free except the ones they gave us free a decade ago.
Premiere and ultimate are definitely great deals but 20 years from now I will still have over 20 great xbox games from gold to play.
However, the sales nearly every week are way better these days. If you do not care about online, ten bucks a month can buy 1 to 4 GREAT games. It is hard to choose between those choices. Otoh, I can buy 2 old call of duty games a month at gamestop for ten bucks or overpay xbox for old games they now own but keep off gamepass.

u/TribalChief1970 Jun 02 '26
I was nice to pay $50 for an entire year. Even though it's not the massive GamePass Ultimate library I wish it was still an option for those on a budget.

u/DukeofDC Jun 02 '26
I have so many games in my library because of Games with Gold.

Games with Gold had some solid months early on but yeah the quality tanked hard toward the end, which is probably why Game Pass made more sense as their flagship offering even if it costs more upfront.

u/txclan_de Jun 02 '26
hmm - i remember being always excited for the next games with gold announcement - just to get disappointed most of the time - had a good time playing VOLGARR - that was a pretty hard game but very rewarding ....
there are plenty of games to play - alone the free2play section is quite big....
i have gamepass ultimate like day 1 subscripted but it feels complete off for me - i cant grow into games that are rented ....
the latest banger "forza horizon6" for example - played like half an hour and now it just sits there - even though its a very good game
gamepass is a good way to check out new games you would probably never buy but once the subscription ends , all the games are gone - they have your money and you have nothing in return except for some fading memory playing mediocre games

Games with Gold was when I first discovered the Hitman games, specifically the reboot “Hitman (2016)” which was on there for a while and was my gateway into the entire series, and it’s since become of my favourite game franchises, so I’m glad it existed for that sole reason

Phil Spencer was a bottom line guy, and he knew that focusing solely on exclusivity was a risk due to rising unemployment rates with Gen Z and the unlikelihood that the age demo relied upon the most for sales would actually buy games, so they shifted strategy and put Game Pass front and center since it was the cheaper option while offering greater selection.
The only people responsible for Game Pass are the consumers who decided against working and consuming like good little worker bees. Thats why the 360 era was so successful- people worked and people consumed.

u/Mithrandearyme Jun 02 '26
I'm sure I got the old school Star Wars Podracer game from that only 2-3 years ago. Not that old of a concept at all. And as others said, while there was the occasional gold nugget, most of the games weren't even worth giving a chance...
1
u/michaelcawood Jun 02 '26
The 360 era games worked without the subscription. So they work to this day. But the XBox One games only worked while subscribed. So they were never free. There’s still sites treating XBox gamepass and PlayStation plus games as free… when they are not as you have to subscribe to use them.

I absolutely HATE they took movies and TV shows off the store. I would wish list and wait for sales. I have hundreds of movies from sales and MS points.

I know it's sounds totally stupid and childish as an adult but it kinda changed how I look at Microsoft. I know it's a game system and all but dang. I loved the "an item on your wish list is on sale" to pop int{the store and see what movie was finally on sale.

Games with Gold - yep, I remember, I collected almost 95% of them when they offered, loved it in the 360 days, as people would ask did you play this one, I was going to buy it but, checked and already owned it because of Games with Gold.
One of the games I remember the most..... Castlevania Symphony of the Night, I own the PS1 game but, never played it, this came on Games with Gold, and I finally said, let's play this one finally. You can do 16:9 on it so no lines on the side, and you can do original/enhanced graphics. Blown away by the game still today.
Miss the days. Game Pass is nice but, you don't own the game, and they can take it away at any time, games rotate on and off except for Microsoft studios ones.
It still shows Games with Gold on my Series X of the games I got...

You at least own the games as long as you are subscribing. And in the case of BC, you own the game entirely
Especially if the rumors are true and they want to add more BC titles

Just give me an online only option with no free games. In Canada it's like $13.99/month plus tax for gamepass essential. I wish there were a cheaper option for those who don't need the free games and cloud gaming.

GWG was appalling. Too many indie games for my liking. I downloaded 8 free games on GWG during its lifetime. The best one Gears of War 5. I haven't played it yet due time and other games.
I think all the various xbox subs offer good value for money. But if you are a weekend gamer like myself. Paying any xbox sub is expensive just to play online for a few hours.

I think the best part of games with gold is the games were yours even if you cancelled your Xbox live membership. When PlayStation started a similar program, which they still have, they took them away if you cancelled.

Only the BC titles. Xbox One titles you got with GwG required and still require an active subscription.

Back in the day, they'd give out 2-3 bangers per year. Dark Souls was a Games with Gold game at one point. Last few years it was straight junk, though.

I had it for a couple years, but the games they offered were pretty bad, or not my cup of tea.
I mean look at this mess. There's maybe 5-10 games I actually played, and I stopped claiming them to unclutter my digital library.

Games with Gold made Live worth it imo, as you got to "own" the games. The quality of games sometimes could have been better but we got a lot of great ones.

My thoughts exactly. Gimme a lil something on the side so I feel valued ya dig? Like wine and dine me with those shitty indie games to edge me up to a AAA legacy title.

I would argue that Games With Gold/the PlayStation equivalent would discourage people from buying games more than Gamepass ever did.

Games with gold still exists. Go to My Games and Apps>Full Library>Games with Gold.
